We usually call all stories from Tales of the vampires and Tales of the slayers canon, don't we, because of Antique (the Xander & Dracula story) and the Fray story, which are supposedly canon, although I can't remember who confirmed that. I'm reading the Buffy/Willow part of The Broken Bottle of Djinn right now, at it says that it takes place in 1997, which means early season 2, maybe season 1, I'm not sure. We see Willow perform some serious magics(opening a portal), but up until Becoming part 1, she had never done magic before, had she? I'm not sure if it's ever said in Becoming that it's her first time doing a spell, but this conversation seems to implie it vrya.net/bdb/clip.php?clip=2077 (by the way, why on earth wouldn't Giles do the spell, even if she had more knowledge? He's the one who has done black arts, unless I'm wrong in my assumption and Willow opens portal all the time). So I can assume that the writers (Jane Espenson and Douglas Petrie)screwed up, and wrote a continuity error, which makes sure that Tales of the slayers, or parts of it, is very unlikely to be canon. What do you guys say? Did I miss something?

Easy solution, discount "The Broken Bottle if Djinn". It's not collected in the Tales... TPB, so it's separate enough.

They're canon, so I'd just chalk it up to an inconsistency/error. Season 8 screwed up Warren's return, but it's canon. Sometimes flubs just happen.

Agreed, we can't discount an entire series because of one continuity error. I've not read the story myself, but I'd just ignore the date and pretend it happened in S3 instead. Considering that Season Eight now takes place in a floating timeline, exact dates are meaningless now anyway.
