Well she DOES play a pivotal role later on in BSG... but none of that will have weight here on Caprica. This is all before the tragedy that invokes the events of BSG; right now Graystone can't even figure out how Cylons work! Nobody's expecting the human holocaust that happens 58 years later, much less the war coming 18 years down the road. Besides, Lucy Lawless = instant watch for me. Like Amy Acker or Michelle Trachtenberg. Basically, though, Lucy Lawless's character in BSG is one of the "skinjobs" i.e. a Cylon that can take human form. There are only 12 unique types of these in existence, and Lawless's has a pivotal role in the story of BSG, that I obviously won't reveal here for those of you watching the show as we speak. So I suspect that she'll be some unknown beauty here in Caprica City and that somehow we'll get to the point where she becomes one of the 12 models of humanoid Cylon. (Maybe she's Zoe's role model? Fashion designer of some sort? Who knows.) You don't really need to know this since it will probably play out in Caprica (or at least we'll get some glimpse of the beginning of these events happening in Caprica), but I thought I'd take a moment to explain, in case you were interested. So there's a TINY bit of backstory as to why I'm so excited for Lawless to be coming on. ;D

imdb.com says that he's in Rebirth, the 1 ep(not the pilot). It says the air date was 29th January. I just watched the episode and I didn't see James at all. And I was actively looking for him, so I'm pretty certain he wasn't in this episode. Those cheekbones! I would recognize him. Is this the first time we've seen the opening credits? I really love them. And the music too. Regarding Amanda Graystone... I don't know what the woman was thinking-- admitting to the world that her daughter was a terrorist and caused the bombing. I can understand why the writers would do this. It would make Avatar Zoe feel like she really doesn't belong in this world and maybe do something drastic like join up with STO.
In a sense, I guess she feels like she didn't understand or know her daughter at all, but to publically announce it at a memorial service seems over the top, imo.
Ya man. I totally was looking for him too! Excited to see him in the Rebirth episode. He's not in there4 and ya none in the credits.

Yes, the planets are all named after the Zodiac. The planets don't share many traits with their associated Zodiac names, but they do each have unique traits that set them apart (for instance, Gemenon people reject all forms of modern medicine; it's part of their religious beliefs). Actually its not the Gemenons that reject it. It's the Sagittarians. I remember cause I am a Sagittarius. If you watch the episode of BSG in Season 3, "the Woman King" you will see

Gemenons are just the crazy religious folk.
I'm not really getting the racism towards Taurons though. I thought that colony was considered one of the more upper class colonies, along with Caprica.

Oh, you're right. Damn, I got them mixed up! How did that happen? It's probably something like the divide between rural/agricultural areas of a region versus the more centralized city-type areas of a region. We rely on those agricultural centers to provide our food, but the people are from another country or something.

II totally agree. I think that Tauron is like the second to Aerilon. Baltar is from Aerilon a plains farmer colony.
Joseph Adama says in the pilot for Caprica that Tauron doesn't have flowers and pretty landscaping. So my guess is that its similar to Aerilon.

I hope we get to see more people from more of the 12 Colonies.

Ah, I didn't know it was one of the agricultural colonies. I assumed it would be an urban area.

Well, exactly... and not everyone on the show uses it. But it's kinda like how the characters of Firefly all uttered Chinese curse words... it's a characteristic of the universe. If "frak" is the catch-all curse word, then it would stand to reason that it's used a lot more. Indeed, and it has an unusual history. One of the most memorable moments of BSG S2 is when Callie, in an attempt to get Chief Tyrol to talk about his grief, suddenly yells, "TALK TO ME YOU MOTHERFRAKKER!" and then the two of them bust out laughing. "Mother frakker?" See, it implies that the word "motherfrakker" isn't used as much, or perhaps is more vulgar than any normal use of the word "frak" (Colonel Tigh and Starbuck both use motherfrakker sparingly later on in the show). I always really liked that moment, not just because it makes for the perfect cell phone text message ringtone, but because it implies a linguistic history of the word "frak" that gives a little more texture to the universe at large. Actually... The word "frak" was used first in the ORIGINAL Battlestar Galactica. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frak_%28expletive%29And I feel I'm gonna get weird responses for this... But does anyone ever catch themselves thinking of this show as if it was more a prequel to the original BSG than the new one? I've caught myself thinking "Wow!! I can't believe Lorne Greene has a gay uncle and tried to become a part of the mob!!".

Yeah, I never even talked about whether or not the word was originally used in the original BSG. I was just talking in relation to the reimagined series.

Fantastic episode tonight. I have not a single bad thing to say. Except that Daniel Greystone was kinda creepy in the board meeting... but hey I guess that's why the first war between the Cylons and humans started, right?

True. "There's a brilliant mind in there." Oh Daniel, if only you knew the truth value of that statement. His obviously disparaging statements towards what the Cylon AI would do is the root of what becomes a major conflict in BSG - the Artificial Other. It's combining two sci-fi tropes - artificial intelligence and aliens (frequently used as the "Other" - see: every sci-fi film made at the height of the Cold War) in order to make a complicated statement about the progression of technology. If Daniel knew his daughter was inside that U-87, he probably wouldn't have broached the issue in a board meeting at all. It's one thing if you have just one AI that you can replicate over and over, but to have a unique person inside of a machine - who can't be replicated, lest we forget - is another thing entirely. And adding even more layers is the Tamara Adama problem. Zoe's avatar gets to live on in the robot, but what about Tamara? She appears to be stuck between planes - Purgatory, basically - not quite dead, but certainly not alive. Of course, Tamara never had an avatar before Daniel made one for her - she is therefore quite the anomaly in the V-world. I love the parallels drawn between Daniel and Joseph, too - while Joseph is very much aware of his daughter's avatar's existence, Daniel still operates under the assumption that Zoe's avatar was erased, gone forever, and so, unlike Joseph, he isn't so concerned with his actions. Based on the preview, it looks like we'll be getting some STO action next week. I'll be curious to see how Lacy's story figures into this twisty road of events.

Tamara could cause some real trouble in the V-World. She could rule that place!

I'm starting to like Tamara....she definitely got some stones by the end of this episode...the ending scene of her walking away with the gun by her side was badass IMO.
edit
also, where is everybody getting the info on James making an appearance on the show?...i would love to see it if anyone minds posting the link.
