His appearance has been no more superfluous than Gwen, Nina, and Groo in After the Fall and I don't hear anyone complaining about them. Then you weren't listening hard enough lol In my experience on this board, After the Fall and Brian Lynch can basically do no wrong. Whereas Season Eight is constantly criticised and nitpicked, AtF is frequently praised as being one the "greatest comics of all time". For example, people always whine about S8 having daft creatures like tree people and fairies, but turn a blind eye to the ridiculous Silver Lake demons or the dragon fighter jets in AtF. Similarly, people bitch about returning characters in S8 but when Gwen appears for no reason in Angel people are like "squeeee". Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy AtF and Brian has contributed so much to this fandom (both in his writing and his personal interactions with the fans... how many writers are so generous with their time?). However, I think there's a bit of a bias toward his work and I'd like to see more constructive criticism. S8 and AtF are both imperfect stories.

Ok I'm going to go for a bit of a generalisation here, and it's just a theory but maybe the differing reactions to Buffy season 8 and AtF lie in their differing readership? Buffy has always been a more realistic show I believe (I mean in Angel things like the fact that Angel claimed to be good but still charged people for being saved and that out of the millions of dimensions in the world Cordelia just happened to be teleported to Lorne's home dimension of Pylea, were just accepted). I think that Angel appeals to people who primarily love fantasy whereas Buffy appeals primarily to those who love relationships, and therefore the people reading the Buffy comics expect a more realistic universe to be created than the Atf readers do, making them- in some ways- harder to please. Alternatively maybe the fact that Atf was set in an alternate dimension meant that there were so many big impossible twists in the storyline that nobody noticed the little ones? In my personal opinion Riley was brought back to create a love rival for Twangel and also to allow truly open speculation about Twilight's identity, because if we hadn't seen them in the same room together I'm almost certain that hunderds of us would have just assumed the mysterious military man from Buffy's past was none other than Mr Finn
