I kinda still didn't get it? This post from buffy boards might help answer... or confuse more Main points: Five by Five can mean both "I understand" or "Everything is perfect" depending on the situation buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?p=444805

"Five by five" is also a quote from the poem "Extermination" by Charlotte Delbo- a non-Jewish member of the resistance to the Nazis in France who was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Ravensbruck. The poem begins:
"Five by five they walk down the street"
Therefore the term also has seriously negative connotations. I don't know if this effected Joss Whedon's choice of the phrase but when I saw it on this thread that was what I thought of and the poem's been around for about half a decade so I think it's probably one of the earliest uses of the phrase.

Interesting information. I'm guessing in the case of the poem, Five by Five is how they are lined up (instead of one by one or two by two).

I thought five by five meant "im cool" or "im fine" The way Faith uses it would imply that, because it's often her answer to "how are you?" and she usually says it in a cheery voice. But personally I always interpreted it as meaning "I'm holding up ok" or something along those lines because with everything Faith's been through I don't think she could ever really be fine? I don't really know

I believe five by five is some sort of army code defining the condition of your body parts in combat. If you're 'five by five', that means that you're perfectly okay, ie not harmed, so it was Faith's way of saying that she was fine
