There is a book called "Slayer Slang. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Lexicon", by Michael Adams, Oxford University Press 2003! It's awsome, all is in there ...

I'd argue that "slanguage" ("slaynguage," maybe?) isn't so much specific quips and one-liners as it is the Buffy characters' verbal patterns and general way of speaking. Even if you were to start speaking like the characters on the show, you probably wouldn't use a lot of the exact same phrases, simply because they usually relate to specific situations that don't often arise in real life.

A few of the characteristics that define Buffyspeak:

-- "Fill-in-the-blank guy or girl." If you're at the movies with friends and offering to stand in line for the popcorn, normally you'd probably say "I'll get the popcorn." The Buffyspeak version would be "I'm popcorn-getting guy." Can be accompanied by words converted into strange forms: "Why is Jane all depresso-girl today?"

-- Unconventionally formed nouns, often derived from non-noun parts of speech. "I had to stop for some unscheduled slayage." I can't think of a more realistic example that doesn't sound weird right now.

-- Deletion of the verb "to be." "It turns out, Mom -- not so amused by the skipping-class thing."

I've started using phrases like "morbid much" or "I'm depresso girl" - as far as this is possible in a non-English-speaking environment

On a separate note, trying Slayer-speak in a foreign language - good effort!

There's a great book called "Slayer Slang" on this very topic. Some of my favorite Buffyisms are: "lurkage", freaky-deaky", and of course, Buffy's cute little habit of adding a -y to words.

By the by, "five by five" is an aviation term. Faith just appropriated it for her own use. (I like to take it to mean that she was an Army brat before she was Chosen. But that may just be me.)

I've been thinking about writing an essay from a "Metaphors We Live By" perspective, examining some of the metaphors used in Buffy and what it means in linguistic terms. Mebbe if I get some free time...
