IDW does Jurassic Park!

I'm tres tres excited about this one... It's been forever since there's been any news on this franchise; JP4's been mired in production limbo for years now, and I doubt it'll ever see the light of day, so I'm really excited to see if this will be handled well.
First issue out in June! Check out the variant cover to #1 by the legendary Frank Miller.
Pretty nifty.

Basically, it starts with a 5-issue arc, titled "Jurassic Park: Redemption", written by Bob Schreck. The interiors will be done by Nate Van Dyke, with regular covers by Tom Yeates, and a variant cover by a roster of different artists: #1 Frank Miller, #2 Arthur Adams, #3 Paul Pope, #4 Bernie Wrightson, and #5 Bill Stout.

I was literally flabbergasted when I saw the headlines for this pop up on various sites. Anything Jurassic Park related in the news just seems like a foreign concept to me now, and I'm still in a bit of a shock.

Jurassic Park remains to this day, my favorite movie (and book, for that matter). I love the world that Spielberg and Crichton created, and I am really excited to see what IDW can add to it.

It's great that IDW wants this to develop into an ongoing title (I believe the first arc is 5 issues, and then they'll continue if sales are strong).

I really, really, really, really, really, really hope this is good.

Oh, and I just love that Frank Miller cover. It rocks. It's nice to see the Allosaurus (presumably) getting some love on the second cover as well.

I'll definitely be getting into this if it turns out good. The first movie is one of the best ever, and the other two are enjoyable. It's a great story and world, and come on, dinosaurs kick major ass. A possibly ongoing comic series screams major potential.

Looks more like a Carnotaurus to me, since it has those horny protuberances above its brow. The Carnotaurus was featured quite prominently in The Lost World (the book, not the movie).
I'm actually quite excited about this, and I'll definitely be adding the series to my pull-list. Hope it's good...
There's so much that the franchise can still do, so as long as the first arc turns out well, I'm sure the rest will probably be a success.

Ooh good call on the Carnotaurus, I didn't notice the two horny things, just the smaller size. I wonder if they'll give it those chameleon like abilities that it had in the book (which were fictional, if I remember).

I hope they keep as much of the stuff from the books as possible. Yeah, the chameleon-like ability was probably a creative liberty taken, just like the Dilophosaurus' frill and spitting (I don't think the frill was actually mentioned in the book, but the spitting was), but it just made them so much more fascinating. Crichton's dialogue wasn't the best, but his imagination and art direction with his critter designs were pretty damn visionary.

I loved Jurassic Park as a kid. The first movie is great, the second two are crappy but who cares - dinosaurs!

Last I heared Joe Johnson was talking about a second trilogy, but I don't think the films will ever materialise. Cool to see the world revisited, I don't buy that the kids would want anything to do with a new park though.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. You really nailed it.

But I´m a little concerned. Tim and Lex weren´t on Isla Sorna but Isla Nublar. So, let´s hope this isn´t a bad sign.

Edit: The Chris ryall article says that Lex is working for the UN and is trying to keep people from Isla Nublar and Sorna (sigh of relief)

Sounds like the kids are under corporate pressure. Plus, it's a fundamental human flaw; we always think we can do better than our predecessors because we know better.
It's one of the basic themes of humanity at large. Yay us!
But I think you put the appeal of the franchise in perspective the best with just one word: "DINOSAURS!!!"

Yeah, I think the "Isla Sorna" in the solicitation was just a mistake, since we all know they weren't on that island. I can't wait to find out more about the story, such as where the new park would be built. I would imagine in the U.S., like they tried to do in San Diego/The Lost World. Thirteen years without any human contact, I'd guess the islands are pretty wild at this point (Sorna already was) and unsuitable to try and build a new park on.

This news makes me want to track down the old Topps run of comics. I remember reading a few of them when I was younger and thought they were pretty cool. No idea how they’d hold up today though.

I'm just wondering which continuity the comics take after. Whether they're going with Crichton's books, or the movies.
I mean, if they go with the movies, then it'd make sense that the world knows about Isla Sorna, since a rampaging T-Rex is pretty hard to forget. Plus, John Hammond's plea for people to just leave the animals alone on TV.
If you go by the book's continuity, it really wouldn't make much sense to actually have the world know about either islands, since the Costa Rican government was keeping everything under wraps... with a lot of debriefing, etc for the survivors.

I guess we'll find out easily enough... if Tim is younger and Lex is older, then we're going with the movies. If it's in reverse, we'll be sticking to the novels. I'd wager that we'll be following (at least mostly), the continuity set by the movies. It's the more mainstream version, and there are tons of people who probably watched the films, and never touched the books.

But yeah, that has to be a mistake in the solicitation. Good catch.

I'd imagine they will stick with the movie continuity. It'd be great to see them continue to pull from the books though, such as the continuation of the Lewis Dodgson storyline from The Lost World, which I was always a fan of. I always figured that he would play a role in JP4, if it ever got made. I loved how everything went so wrong for Dodgson on the island, even worse than what happened with Nedry.

The second movie really screwed up where it shouldn't. The entire book was written more or less how a movie would be, and so all they had to do was adapt that, instead of changing just about every single thing that made the book such a great read.
Shame of you David Koepp aka "Unlucky bastard" (the guy that gets chomped by the bull T-Rex in San Diego when he breaks from the crowd, that's him, and "unlucky bastard" was how he was credited).

CBR has an interview with Bob Schreck, the writer, HERE. Some cool stuff, and confirmation that the comics will follow the continuity set by the movies, and that the Topps comics run will be reproduced in TPB form by IDW. Erm.. yeah, officially even more excited now.
And finally, I'll be buying IDW merch again... was wondering when that day would come.

ETA: Just found this IGN interview with Schreck HERE. It contains a preview image of Van Dyke's interior art.
Preview pages have been added to the original post. Apparently plans beyond the first arc have been made, and each arc will be handled by a different creative team. I'm kinda torn on that, since I do prefer a cohesive artistic vision, but then again, it'll be interesting to see different takes on such a huge franchise.

Not entirely sold on Nate Van Dyke's work based on that one page of art, but we'll see if it grows on me. I'm not a fan of the coloring, on that page either. But fingers crossed.

Funny how the art can totally make or break a product at times. Looking at the Velociraptors, I kinda wish that Van Dyke had stuck to his own quirkier style a bit more... I actually kinda like all his monkey drawings.
Now... what would be cool is if we could get some covers out of this guy... doubt it, since I'm sure his fee is absurd since he is a bigshot illustrator/conceptual artist/whatever, but I've been in love with his dinosaurs since I saw his art in a Jurassic Park magazine I had as a kid. Behold some of the works of the great Mark "Crash" McCreery! Yes, he's the guy who did most, if not all the dinosaur concept art for the movies.

Hey IDW-philes... any word out on the Topps reprints? Figured that they may try to build-up some hype for the new arc by releasing the trades before, but perhaps I'm wrong...

There's this, on Amazon. Not out until November though and it only claims to collect 4 issues (the Jurassic Park movie adaptation). I'd rather IDW do an omnibus, as there are ~30 issues total of the Topps run.
