New numbering? Aren't they already aware it's hard for people to keep track of the on-going series, mini series and one shots?
What should it be called? Vol one of the second run?

What should it be called? Vol one of the second run? Maybe...its not a bad way of looking at. But yes it could be confusing for people trying to follow the collections. From a collectors view it doesn't bother me...as I arrange my collection chronologically story wise. ( So for me I have my Not Fade Away tpb followed by my 'First Night' HC (number 2), followed by 'Spike:After the Fall" ( no number), and then volumes 1,3,4,5.

Angeliclestat: It's not really my place to question your idea of chronological order (lol), but... "First Night" is told through Betta George's perspective during the events of #5... so doesn't that screw up your order? I can't see how it would make sense in any order but #1-6.

I kinda ignore those bits:) For me I could read/watch NFA then go straight into Spikes First Night story. Then after reading all of the First Night stories, go into Spike:Atf, then AtF proper. I have my pre AtF comics arranged similarily, with the episode adaptations slotted in where I think appropriate. Honestly it was a boring Sunday and the system stuck:)

Sorry angeliclestat, gotta agree with Pat here. The way the Angel books are meant to be read is in the order of the numbers on the spine. Although the flashbacks in hardcover #2 happen prior to hardcover #1, as Pat said, the Beta George sections happen after the end of #1. And the Beta George sections are the only part of the book with any sort of narrative and continuity, the rest is just random, self-contained flashbacks.
Not to mention the flashbacks spoil some important plot points if you were to read First Night before the rest of AtF. We're supposed to get hit in the face that Gunn is a vampire at the end of the first issue. I still remember how gobsmacked I was. That surprise would have been ruined if I'd already read First Night. Other surprises are Illyria turning back into Fred and Lorne being the lord of Silverlake. To me, reading First Night before the rest of After the Fall is like watching "Fool for Love" before "Welcome to the Hellmouth" because the flashbacks technically take place prior to the first episode.
But... onto the topic at hand. I can't tell you how annoyed I am that this hardcover is numbered one instead of seven. It clearly follows the events of AtF and Aftermath. It's not like this is a reboot, nor is it the first time we've changed writers in the ongoing series. It should be number seven. As Skytte says, the IDW books are already confusing enough for newcomers without multiple books labeled as the first. I really hope they reconsider this when they're doing a second printing... It really sucks that we're not getting a cover gallery too.

I know what you mean...but I am coming from the point of view of someone who has read it already:) Again - if you did that as a first time viewer of course it would make no sense. But there are plenty of youtube vids where people have put the flashbacks in order - I think it's fun. In fact - there is a site which is attempting to put all of Angel in chronological order: chronangel.blogspot.com/So that is all I have done:)

And if I were to give them to anyone I would give them in the correct order. But for re-reads I like to do it in the order given above:) That way the flow from issue 5 to issue 9 works better...rather than having 3 issues of flashbacks in the way during the re-read. Again - if you did that as a first time viewer of course it would make no sense. But there are plenty of youtube vids where people have put the flashbacks in order - I think it's fun. I thought I'd drop in, and give my thoughts on this HC.
I saw it in the store just a few days ago, and was totally shocked. I picked it up on instinct. The cover is really nice. BUT. I decided not to get it in the end. There's a new numbering on the side, instead of '7' there's '1'. This proved to me that it isn't considered canon in my mind. With the new 'Spike' series coming, and the failure of the 'Angel' ongoing, this was the final push.
I'll be probably ignoring this series from now on. I was trying to give it a chance, but there seems to be no point in it anymore. 'Spike' is finally here, and that's that. I can actually have decent stories to read with the characters. ^_^

^That was my same feeling when I saw the 1 on the side. *sigh* I was trying to ignore it but it was calling me. I don't blame you for giving up. The cover is alright, but it's not a favorite.
