Hey, hey, hey I never said they were bad. I can still tell it's Riley and Sam, but I think they're flawed, not perfect likenesses like she usually does. Chen's likenesses have always been hit or miss with me. Looking back at all her covers I've collected, I like #19 and #20 the best. Maybe #4, though there's something a little off with Dawn there.

I'm not a Riley fan, but I do find myself curious about this one.

"I'm Riley, watch me pose. This is my wife, Sam. Check out her tits." That's basically all this cover is.

I actually have a theory that sam will have been revealed to have been a cover Wife for Riley. The union never seemed Kosher and Riley got with her so quick after Buffy it felt like a Rebound. If I'm right I'm sure that'll help to explain why she has had no role as of yet in season 8 or been mentioned by Riley. I am glad they are going to explain this since most of the other members in Twilights circle have had intros into season eight as to why they're with him.

Well, Em, you and I have had entire conversations about this before, and I most agree with your newly coined term: "pose-ishness". That's my biggest peeve with Chen's covers for me. Even when the characters are supposed to be in a dynamic pose, it usually doesn't work because it looks posed. A prime example being her work on the #22 cover, with Satsu and Kennedy. While the Kennedy likeness was pretty much perfect, the entire cover just felt static. My favorite cover from Chen, and it's actually the only cover of hers that I really like, is the one from #5. Other than that, I've either gotten her covers either because I had no choice (TFAW didn't have an option earlier on), or because it was the lesser of two evils. The #19 cover was pretty nice, but thematically, I thought that Jeanty's variant worked better. And in retrospect, that may be even more the case this season.

I don't get why so many seem to have a problem with Chen's cover. I actually think it looks pretty decent. The drawings aren't supposed to be exact likenesses of the actors, but representations of the characters. I think Chen does a great job with that.

Moline's art completes me. And this comment completes me.

Personally, I'm not looking for perfect likenesses. My biggest criticism of her covers, as pointed out above (echoing Emmie's more thorough post) is because they don't seem to be more than posed photos. And Chen's guilty of heavily photoreferencing to the point of flat out copying stills before (i.e. her cover for #26). It all just feels less and less organic, and maybe 30 or so covers down the line, it's getting tired. There needs to be a little more variety in the covers.

Meh. I think Chen's cover is bad. But I have never really been too impressed with her work, sooo....
Moline's cover is amazing. I'm actually excited about this one-shot. I have too many questions about Riley this season.

Chen's guilty of heavily photoreferencing to the point of flat out copying stills before That's the only thing i don't like about her work. I mean when i first saw the cover for issue 35 i could tell that Faith's image was referenced from Chosen, and Xander's was (i think) from Entropy(but with the eye patch added).

Well, to each their own of course but I like the cover. In fact, I like Chen's cover better than Moline's. I realize saying that puts me in the minority camp.

YOU CANNOT RESIST THE POWER OF THE SIDE-BOOB. IT WILL LULL YOU INTO SUBMISSION AND PWN YOUR ASS. FINISH HIM, SIDE-BOOB. FINISH HIM! NOTHING CAN DEFEAT THE SIDE-BOOB! (Sorry, had to say it.) I like Chen's cover, despite the fact that she uses the same palette of muddy colors she seems to use for every Buffy cover. I think it's a very good likeness of Riley. It's pretty much a given at this point that she does the pinup covers and Jeanty does the action covers. I do prefer the Jeanty cover this time, though. I like the composition of it. Buffy looks like she's saying "Sorry I blew up the world, guys." Since she's on the cover, I wonder if she'll be in the book at all. She probably will, since it covers how Riley came to be working for her. I look forward to this issue both to find out what happened with Riley (and Sam), but also to get a new perspective on Twilight from someone who is closely familiar with both sides of the story. I actually have a theory that sam will have been revealed to have been a cover Wife for Riley. Maybe she was his beard. Hey, everyone complains that there's no gay guys in the Jossverse. Didn't you always wonder why Forrest was so pissy toward Buffy? ETA: I wonder if Jeanty's cover here is another homage. Looks like it might be. Anyone recognize it?

So I'm not alone after all. ;D I actually have a theory that sam will have been revealed to have been a cover Wife for Riley. Maybe she was his beard. Hmm...I was thinking Sam probably just died or something, but you may be onto something here...I like this theory.

[Didn't you always wonder why Forrest was so pissy toward Buffy? Forrest was blatantly in love with Riley, the writers weren't exactly subtle about that.

Why is no one pointing out that Moline's Sam also has some boobage going on? Maybe not on the scale on Chen's, but it's there.

The variant cover is by Moline, not Jeanty. Oh yeah. Carry on, then. I've never been much of a fan of Moline's art, but I like this one.
