Well for me, when Chosen ended I belived in the following...
Buffy's and Spike's relationship got in balance.
From there it could go up, or we could just go 'I don't care about this any more-lets go play with something else'.
I have a feeling the writers just poofed on the flames that were growing stronger, and moved on.
I am not against the Bangel relatinship. I feel that that was a posibility, because Buffy always found a way to put her little fingers on the scales and tip them in one way or the other.
But I kind of felt that that everlasting love for Buffy that Spike had was not a thing that could just go cold.
Then again, I did see a few winds that made me all shakeish in the Angel season 5 episodes. Oh,you know, sex with Herm, blah blah with Fred...so fine. But the mad rants about how Buffy would not like him as the resurected vampire who did not die for her were plausible, because in Spike there is always old insecure William, right?
That did relate to Spikes new found love for fighting to be good, brave and all heroic material.
And then the comic books.
First of all... the Buffy in there is this ... one half cold older woman and half a bigger child then she was at 16!And her Angel/Spike dream got out of me a big 'euuuw' because it was all so unessential.
And she gets in to thinking how Xander would be good for her?No. Just, no, ok?Picture in your head something like that on the show. And this is about the show right? I don't see the point of it all going out of canon when the shows were the origin. It's suppose to evolve, yes, but it should not become a alternative universum.
On the opposite of Buffy there is this grand Spike fightnig around to save the world, wild on sex and relationships, a walking, talking mashine of love, that he would just give to anybody that is there with him!
How does this fit?
The character still has his own brisk and humor that I do love! But it is just not wright.
To those freelancing Spike fans that love to tell me that it is time for him to move on-Considering the comicbook Buffy, especially in 'The last gleaming', yes, it is. But, again, why is he cool about it?
It has to hurt. It is supposed to hurt.
Her being all *Angel you are so great even thou you just started the next apocalypse and killed so many people*-There should be hurt.
All is forgoten?But why?
Considering the BIG news that the Spike spin off will show his again BIG romantic involvement, all tucked nice and neet before the time line in Buffy season 8....i have to say:
Why did they have to get him to be in love,or what ever?
Sex, I could take. Somehow. I do not like it,but it is somehow ok. The unsatisfactory geting satisfied. Know what I meen?
Again,I ask-but love?
He is not easy on the love. Hi is on sex and flirtations, not love. Just look ad Herm!
I have no problem with Beks. She is...ok. She does not go all sparkie on me,but ok. I do not hate her. She is a few steps under Angel in my mind. They could do what ever they like, I just don't LOVE them.
(And yes,I am a Spuffy fan,and I do not need a happy ever after just... a tiny spec of an explanation that is not there)
So, here I have a Spike, going all romantical again. How?
I was ok with Cecilia-she was not a love, just a pretty girl that he didn't even know.
Dru was fine. She was a loony toon and just plain boring as human, seeing how she was all puritan and selfjudmental.
And I could understand Spikes love for her, because he was made for her. And I don't meen in the destiny way, just the 'she needed company and picked him'.
And there was Buffy. Nobody pushed him. She didn't even want him. But he knew, as the show tells us, somewhere deep in him that he liked her from the first moment.
She pushed and he stayed.
And even thou in the last episodes she is all issues about Angel, he wants to be the one.
And he wants to die for her. AND more importantly for her frends and mankind, in which he at this point (as how it is all before Angel season 5) has no interest. He cares about her feelings not just in the aspect of her being alive and well, but also that she is not in pain over the losses.
What ever she does, he will sacrifice for her. He will get a soul. And in a sence that soul is hers, right? He did not go all complete love and tears over any other deaths. Not even Freds. And he did live with her sister when SHE died.
So, here we are ,him all over her. She was in a way his first real love, and even thou Buffy still goes for Angel,HER fist love, this is not explored.
Remember that line: 'One hundred and plus years and the only thing I ever was sure of was:you. You are the one'?
Don't you dare tell me he meant that she was the one for the fight!
So...him not being even hurt is just....un-Spike like.
He is temperamental and snotty. He was suposed to say something, anything.
And again do not tell me he has grown. That is just fine and dandy up till the point where we should be true to ourselves and say the next:our personalities evolve to a point yes,but we do not change our core. And looking at 'Angel:After the fall' he is not non temperamental and most of all he is not quiet.
So,go figure.
And Angel? Oh there are a few threads that go in to him,but i will just say,him being ok with all that he has done is in the same row with Buffy being all sunshine and butterflies after The twilight series.
So,I am unhappy.
I fell like the authors throw the potential out the window.
I do not mind Buffy with Angel in the end.
It's just that I expected so much more effort put in the simple fact that Buffy and Spike had a great big frendship and love in the end that just could not go up in smokes with such trivialities, because it would make them cold-and that is one thing these characters are not.
And for the people that go all ooohhowww Spike needs something better...yes, he did need it. But Buffy at the end of season 7 was that something more. Buffy in the most of season 8 is still that same Buffy but with walls around her. As for buffy in The last gleaming and The twilight? No,she is not. She is some mutant alien that has been lobotomized.
And the characters that are for now in Spikes path are so not worthy him. If they want him to love again, I need a big bad process. Beks can not do it. She is,in a way just very minor, and is not in a position to outgrow the Buffy from Sunnydale.
Remember the saying a leopard does not change his spots? I have a sinking feeling that these leopards, especially Spike and Buffy, but Angel too-have been to the hairdresser and got them selves a pink and purple overcoat.
