I think the story looks cool but I really don't like the art on this.

I like it better than the art on the Wash one shot. It seems like most of the Whedon related books I either really like the art and don't like the story or really like the story and don't like the art.

Well, different strokes and all that, I guess. I liked the script and art for the Wash one-shot fine. Wasn't expecting much in terms of plot development on that one, and Patric Reynolds linework had that rough and organic feel that seemed to jive with the Verse.
On this one, though... it's Joss plotting out the major beats, with Zack fleshing it all out. And Chris Samnee's art just works for me. It's dynamic, illustrative, and all-around awesome sauce for me. Can't wait to see what goes down in this one.

I don't know if this qualifies as double posting or not since it's been almost a full day and the topic is kind of different than my last post, but if it is I'm sorry. Anyway, I just looked on the darkhorse site and they now have this book listed as coming out NEXT week. What the frig? Why did they push it back at the last minute and when did they decide this?

Really eager for this one. I think Shepherd Book's back story will really complement the show and movie, more than the previous books. And it's being solicited as a graphic novel so it will be pretty self-contained and be almost entirely about him. So quite different from the other books. Especially the character-oriented vs. adventure-oriented stuff. And I'm a fan of Chris Samnee's art and Zack is getting better with his writing as well so timing's pretty good too. Yay! Back around the time when Firefly was still airing (I hate you, Fox!), I remember conjuring up a back story for Book to have his actions make more sense where his uncaring lifestyle/mistakes/misconceptions accidentally led to a someone's (probably a holy man's) death and he decided to give up a very privileged life to adopt that person's mission (a la Angel in Judgement). But after reading the CBR articles it seems Joss hates Book a lot more than I do. That's nice. So yeah, I'm gettin' all-fired Frye high for this shindig. Not nothin' can stop me now! Dong ma? (BTW, I think Book's real name should be left as a tease. Kinda like Glenn Matthews/Tommy(?) from Scrubs. What do you think?)

I just finished this story and I was honestly left kind of disappointed. In the Afterword, Zack says that he wrote this from an outline Joss did and the comic felt just like that...an outline. I felt left wanting so much more on each individual part of his history...like the glimpses we got were too brief. And I don't feel like we were really told too much that we didn't already know/that was really earth shattering.

I really liked the story, but I agree - I almost wish this was a mini-series. The art was meh, not as good as the other Serenity volumes, but I definitely enjoyed the way in which the story was developed - just not enough of it!

Just read it, and I LOVED it! Best Serenity comic so far, easily. Because of this, Book has gone from my least favorite Firefly character, to being in my top three. (Behind River and Kaylee, of course. ) If you're a Firefly/Serenity fan, pick this up. It's great. I expected this to end with reshowing Book's death scene, but it didn't! I was actually quite shocked that it didn't.

It seems like a mixed reaction is coming from the crowd.
I'm surprised that a lot of people felt that this was more of an "outline". It's funny, if I was Zack and I had such a compelling, interesting, unanswered storyline and I was able to write it...I would put in as much ass-wooping awesomeness that I could before I let this get out to the public. Now they can never fix it...unless they plan to expand. But they still have a basic storyline they must stick within. Shame. I'll still pick it up, eventually.

It's $14.99 for only 56 pages of story... but I'd say it was worth it.
The structure of the story was interesting, if potentially confusing. Nested flashbacks that go progressively further back in Book's life to his childhood. First you see where he is at a given point in his life, and then you see how he got there.
There are some very interesting revelations about his life... no real "OMFG" material, but certainly a couple of things I'd never suspected about him.
As for it being an outline... I think it's more like a single episode of "Firefly" in comic form, with the same pacing we'd see in an episode. My guess is that Joss eventually planned to tell Book's story just like this, in a single episode of the show, maybe with a framing story of Book telling this story to the others. I do kind of wish I could have seen the reaction the other characters would have had to his story... especially Mal and Zoe.

Well I loved this comic. I always enjoyed Book's character and his relationship with Mal. I echo others who have said that it would have been amazing to have seen this on screen, and to have seen Mal's reaction to what Book was, and where he came from. I wonder was this why Book was so fond of Mal - he could see a lot of himself in the young captain?
I wonder could this be the future of Serenity comics? Maybe 3 or 4 times a year release a graphic novel which would contain a whole story? It wouldn't be as good as a monthly, but would be better than nothing. And would certainly be better than getting a 8 page webcomic every so often!
