Dark Horse and Joss are throwing IDW a meaty bone, by giving them the bit with Spike's ship. And whatever Willow will be doing. That counts as an even meatier bone, no? From the interview, that was an additional request that was also approved.

Joss is personally reviewing and giving notes on the issues (2, I think?) that Willow will be in, so those are fully canonical issues. Also, the origin of Spike's ship is coordinated with Joss, so that story element is canon.
But it's silly to split hairs to the degree of saying "this panel is canon, and this other panel on the same page is not." So as far as I'm concerned, the whole first arc of the Spike series is canon. It meets the minimum criteria: Joss is personally aware of the storyline in question; has at least some degree of original input; gives his thumbs-up for it fitting in with canon; and won't be contradicting it in his other canon work.
I still don't know what the format of the Spike series is going to be and if these elements (the ship, in particular) are going to continue to be part of it beyond the first arc. As with the Angel series, I'd say the canonicity ends when Joss's personal attention does.

The way I see it, I'll more than likely check out Lynch's series for the info about Spike and his "strange" crew. If it grows on me, then yes, I'll continue to buy the books. If it doesn't impress me, then oh well. I understand that there'll be people who enjoy it, and I won't begrudge them that enjoyment. I would love for IDW to surprise me. I was really excited for the Jurassic Park series, but the art so far kinda blows, so I'm less excited from that angle. The plot, however, does hold some promise, so I'll be keeping it on my pull-list.

I'm so excited about the Brian Lynch Spike's series, even more than Spike's appearance on Buffy season 8 (I have been waiting 3 years for that Spike/Buffy reunion! ! And I'm happy that SPIKE IDW tittle gets a cannon! And I love all IDW comics for Spike and Angel (especially Brian's Spike comics - Asylum, Shadow puppets and ATF), doesn't matter are they canonical or not. The stories and the artwork (especially the artwork!!!) are better than Buffy season 8, by my opinion. I have to admit an year ago I've lost my interest to Buffy's comics, but now my interest is renewed again! I can't wait to see Spike and Buffy reunited! I'm going to buy every single issue of Spike outgoing and Buffy The Last Gleaming!

The tidbits about Buffy season nine make me more excited about season eight, which I was getting less excited about over the past three months.
