I enjoyed this. It's not the most exciting comic in the world, but it's a good little story with some nice character moments. I'm liking the sense of backstory we're getting for Fred, and Illyria's reactions to it. Am I the only one who thought Fred's prom date seemed a little sleazy though? The Scourge are appropiate villains and the Old One is really cool. Old Ones are always cool, especially in comics where you can go wild with their character design and not have it look crappy like the Mayor. I think this series' biggest appeal is David Messina's artwork. One nitpick/question: Illyria's dress sense has been bizarre. I can understand the veil, but what's with the baseball cap? Does she think wearing a hat hides her blue veins and hair? And what was that white gown from #1 all about?

Read your review, Pat (though I haven't read the book yet). Illyria didn't kiss Spike to shut him up. She kissed Spike because he was turning his attention to other girls and she thought this was the easiest and quickest way to win him back to her side.

My bad, will fix. It is pretty interesting how, in both S:AtF and Only Human, she's using the sexual/romantic aspect of Fred to deal with things she doesn't understand.

Don't fret, I was just trying to clear it up.
I haven't read ONLY HUMAN yet, but after your review, really looking forward to it even more.

(Unfortunately my store does not have Only Human #2 in stock this week. Sadness!) Issue #1 blew me away. David Messina's art is fantastic, and I've got to get the name of this colorist too - s/he's just gets it, man. The writing is rock-solid too - maybe a pace or two above yours? Anyway, here's hoping I can pick up #2 soon. I'm way too hyped for it.

I am not a huge huge fan of my writing, so if something is only a pace or two above mine, that is not so good. That said, I love EVERYBODY'S DEAD and I think SPIKE:ATF came out wonderfully.

I lucked out, the evil corporate campus bookstore that bought out the old local comic book store happened to have the variant cover OH #2 out. Scott Lobdell is amazing. David Messina is amazing. Ilaria Traversi (colorist!) is probably not getting paid enough. WOW. I am beyond excited to see how this ends. MORE!!

Really enjoying this series. Managing to explore themes and plots set up in AtF and also create a nice standalone story of its own. Kudos!
More action and less talky in this issue, but I did like the return of the Scourge. I agree with Pat's recview in that it might be been a mite too similar to Hero, but I think that the emphasis in this story is less on the people being saved (that was for Doyle), but a good way to get an Old One into the frame to see how Illyria handles it.
I think it would be great if issue 23 and this were sold in the 1 TPB to really bring the story together - if not I may just keep them together as individual issues (right after my AtF hardcovers:))

I don't get why that guy ran away when he kissed Illyria. Bad breath?

I don't get why that guy ran away when he kissed Illyria. Bad breath? Lol! Karma! I just got this issue Saturday and I loved it! Not as fast paced as the last issue, but I loved it all the same! I'm really excited for the 3rd issue. But I still think Illyria refusing to take Fred's complete physical form is a cop-out

I thought the Scourge were all wiped out. Why did that dude run away after making out with Illyria? Pansy. I bet it was her breath, liquefied organs can't be good for it. lol. I wish Illyria would change into Fred's appearance when she's around people from Fred's past. You guys think the Burkle's know there's a pack of half-breeds hiding on their farm? Big demon! Big demon! But nothing compared to Illyria's primordial form. I noticed that both old ones had a gender according to one another. Hm...

Why did you think that? <_< We only saw them in one episode of the show, but they were mentioned again later (specifically in "Dad" when Team Angel is listing the potential threats to Connor's life, the Scourge are listed). And there was never any reason to suspect that they had all been wiped out.

I liked this issue, I like the Mutari Generator being used, and it makes sense since it played a role in making Illyria more human.
