ANGEL #37Covers: (Click for larger) ANGEL #37

This is the first time that I've been disappointed with how Angel's been drawn on a cover. He just doesn't look like Angel, IMO. And his head looks oddly shaped. Spike looks pretty good though. I have a feeling that this is the issue that 'deals with Spike's OOCness'.

Getting sick of Spike I am .... 'Angel' series, 'Spike' min-series, 'Spike' up coming Series (looking forward to this because of Lynch) 'Buffy season 8'. Still, the guy hasn't really done that much with all of his appearances. Hope he gets some meaning soon.

Hmm, I'm not really sick or tired of seeing Spike, but I agree that his appearances lately do seem a bit... Meaningless? I think that'll change with the 'SPIKE' series, and Buffy Season 8 #36, though.

I think this issue will deal with some of the oddities that have scared people away from the main title.

God, I even want more Spike series – I’d love to see some flashback stories like “Spike Vs Dracula” and “Spike and Dru”!!! He’s my favorite character ever! But I dislike his appearance on the current Angel series… He’s absolutely OOC there… And the cover is a bit disturbing to me. Willingham is trying to make Spike to look like a jerk in a favor of Angel and his son Connor…

^ veiriti, calm down a little, kay? Spike isn't everyone's favourite character (well, right now, he's mine in favour over Angel), but I do agree with you in his appearance on the current Angel series, so I'm glad that we're finally getting the Spike series and therefore, we won't have to worry about OOC Spike on Angel

I think this issue will deal with some of the oddities that have scared people away from the main title. The cover does feel like a bit of a rerun of the dynamics of early AtS 5, only this time Spike has made himself the vampire that the prophecies are all about. Angel's demeanour reminds me of the one he wore in the episode 'Soul Purpose.' I do wish we could move away from this default setting of the Spike and Angel relationship, we seemed to be getting there at the end of AtF, but here we are, back to the issue of prophecies again.

Seconded, I think Brian will be the only writer to develop that part of Spike and Angel's relationship, for the moment anyway. And even then it'll be a bit part in the Spike series. From the way Spike came into Season 8 (in opposition to Twilight) it looks like Joss won't be moving them in a different direction either. I'm quite a fan of Willingham's arc, but I doubt he'll turn his portrayal of Spike on its head and have him and Angel get along. Unless this issue is REALLY going to explain the perceived OOCness. edit: I still haven't learnt how to quote properly *sigh*

The art doesn't look much like the characters . . . but Iam a Spike-lover I'm afraid and am looking forward to more of the him and Angel banter that made season 5 of Angel so great

^ veiriti, calm down a little, kay? Why? What is the Buffyverse there for, if not to get unironically, over-excitedly enthusiastic about it? It's not like veiriti is hurting anyone. I think there should be more fans who make with the gushing.

I said in another thread that Spike has become the Wolverine of the Buffyverse; more of a marketing device than an actual character. In other words, he appears in loads of books just to attract readers but gets no meaningful development in most of them. As others have said, I think Lynch's Spike will be the only series that does anything worthwhile with the character. And that includes S8, which I assume will ignore Angel and revert him back to his previous role as Buffy's lapdog.

Seeing that Angel has no definitive end at this point sort of excites me more than I was about Willinghams work. Just knowing there are unresolved or unexplored avenues in his part of the verse that could be addressed including the issue of Prophecies says alot about where there story could go. Whether a good writer or bad one, the fact that the story goes on and that at least some of us are still interested ensures it will be along while before Angel is truly dusted.
I doubt even Joss, using Angel as a big bad yet again in season 8 will tru;ly be the end for Angel's destiny. Though he and Buffy fight the same war, the each of Seperate, distinct battles that they must be in apart from each other.

He's only been in Season Eight for a few panels, and he already seems to be playing a significant role based on his lines. Also, have you read the only issue of "The Devil You Know" that's been published? Spike (like Angel) is in three series being published right now. Two of those series only have had one issue with him in it so far. Give the writers a chance.

Two of those series only have had one issue with him in it so far. Give the writers a chance. I assume that Spike will be regressed in S8 because of the horrible way in which Angel's character has been regressed (highlighting his love for Buffy at the expense of his mission and son). Plus I doubt Joss cares enough about AtF to bother acknowledging his development there. Call me cynical, but I think his role in S8 will consist of saying "bugger" a few times and prompting some emotional response from Buffy. I'd love to be wrong though. I assume his appearances in other IDW titles will be fluff because you can't really significantly develop the same character across multiple concurrent titles without some collaboration between writers (which there doesn't seem to be at IDW, going by the dodgy continuity). Otherwise the titles end up ignoring each other and any development becomes pointless.
