What did you guys think of the type of things that buffy characters wore? When i was younger i felt inclined to dress like the characters from buffy. I admired the fashion. Now looking back at the show, i think that buffy's dress sense is wack. I guess that's because the show was made a while ago. Buffy always used to wear those slip dresses(e.g. when Buffy starts college and wears that long slip dress with the cherries on). They looked really good on her but noone would wear that type of thing nowadays. Infact, i can only imagine a really anorexic- looking, white chic like buffy/ sarah being able to pull of than kind of look. Alot of the time i think "what the hell is buffy wearing?" But i guess it's cool that buffy's style is fairly unique and not easily imitated. Willow's dress sense was cute in season four but sometimes she looked like a stupid clown. I like Tara's dress sense but i dont think i could ever get away with those long skirts that she'd consitently wear. I'd just look wierd, lol. I guess the fashion was an important part of the characterisation of the scooby gang. But was it realistic? I dont live in the US so i'll never know just how realistic buffy was. I'd be interested to hear your random thoughts on fashion in Buffy :-)

I think the fashion got better as the show went on. In the first season most of the outfits were really ugly, and because of that now when my friends and I go shopping when we find a shortish ugly dress we tend to call it a 'Buffy-dress'. After the first few seasons there's generally only the occaisonal outfit I hate. Though in almost every episode one of my friends will comment on how one of the girls really should be wearing a bra.

That cowgirl hat that Buffy wore at the beginning of Pangs was completely random.

I like how the wardrobes matched the characters, and how they changed with the character.
Willow's wardrobe in season 1-4 was aweful. Then it got a lot better, and I really like the witchy outfits from season 5 & 6. When she got more secure, her outfits showed it. And in season 7, when she was more down to earth, less about witchcraft and "See me, I'm strong and gay now" and more subtle and adult, as if she was in a less colorful part pof her life (which she was grieving, trying to get a normal life again).
Xander's was goofy and nerdy, kind of like Willow's, but it never bothered me the same way. I guess I don't care as much what men wear. But as he matured, his clothes got less wacky.
I liked Giles both in tweed and his later more casual wardrobe. We can practiaclly see him stepping out of his watcher/librarian persona to become a person who cares less about rules, and more about doing what's right.
Buffy always followed trends, which means that sometimes I liked, sometimes I hated. She could have a great outfit in one episode, and then something blah. Kind of the same with Anya. Both of their changes of hairstyles fascinated me. Not sure if either really refelcts who they grew as characters.
Dawn went from kid-wear to teenager to grown up, and it was nice to see her wardrobe develop with her personality and personal growth. She dressed more sensible than Buffy her age, but that could be because of the trends.
I guess one could say that the wardrobes were more colorful in the beginning of the show, and more subtle at the end, both due to trends in fashion, and the characters moods and personality changes.

I did notice how in season three the costume designers had Xander wearing clothes to hide the fact that he has quite strong arms, as in that season he was still supposed to be all weak and helpless.

I think they might even have told Brendon to stop working out so much. Could be my imagination tough.

That cowgirl hat that Buffy wore at the beginning of Pangs was completely random. i completely agree. who would give Sarah that hat is a total mystery. and then what about Faith's first appearence look?! i have always said that by far it's one of the worst outfits i have EVER seen on the show.

Those pink trousers of Buffy's in I think it was the Dracula episode scarred me for life. I loved Tara's dress in OMWF yes it ws OTT but it was pretty and it suited her. I think SMG looked her best in season 4, with her hair lighter and straighter and longer, and her clothes more moderate than season 1 but still fairly fashionable. I think all the black tops and trousers with hair tyed back in alter seasons did her no good at all. I think Spike and Angel always looked amazing. Particularly Spike, I think his most fashionable look was topless.
You know who really dressed well? Anya.

Spike was always very well dressed, espeicially with the black nail varnish. I did love the fact that all the characters had llittle touches like jewelery and nail varnish etc that you wouldn't even notice.

I was happy when they started changing Spike's look up a little in season 5 and 6. I didn't however think that blue shirt he had on in Beneath You was a good look for him.

I love the fashions on Buffy, it totally gives me 90's nostalgia. I saw a girl on campus a few months ago with a long furry-collared jacket that Willow might wear and it totally made me happy.
I love Xander and Oz's clothes. Open button-down shirt, t-shirt, jeans. Simple and always looks good, even now. Sigh. Before guys starting being overly concerned about fashion...If I was a girl I'd probably dress like Willow in the later seasons, when she got all earthy and witchy with the flowy tops.
I agree with Sky, I think they did a good job at evolving the character's wardrobes along with the characters themselves.

i actually have a shirt that Halfrek wears in Entropy except mine doesn't have sleeves. So apparently I like that. imgur.com/sHGIX.jpgI also noticed a lot of crossover between Willow's wardrobe and Pheobe's on friends (like the birthday cake shirt). Just thought that was interesting.

By and large, Buffy's fashion sense was pretty good, and the things she wore don't seem terribly dated. (Although her Season 1 hair certainly does.)
Willow's "Softer Side of Sears" look wasn't trendy or anything, but it was usually at least somewhat tasteful. Her hats were eccentric, but generally looked fine on her. The only character whose wardrobe is really questionable is Xander. Especially his shirts. (The one from "Earshot" with the big red and green vertical stripes, for example.)

I love it for the 90s nostalgia too. Every time I see someone wearing overalls it makes me and my friends wish we could wear overalls again and be cool. Especially with the one side undone. Except... we can't. And then we're sad.

I liked the fashions back then because it was the 90s. I especially loved Willow's look in seasons 1-3 (even though I think her season 5 wardrobe was probably her hottest). They were so "Blossom." <---Remember that show? And since it is 2010, be prepared for the 90s style to come back soon, just as the 80s plagued the last decade.
I don't remember which episode it was, but I remember Buffy wearing a hideous scarf. That's the only think that made me go, "ick." And Xander's Hawaiin shirts. Not hot. But I can see why they made his character wear them.
Anyway, I love how the wardrobe matched each character's personalities, and that their wardrobes changed not only because fashion changed, but also because the characters grew and changed. Not a lot of shows pay that close attention to wardrobe.

I love watching the early seasons because the outfits are just so 90s! Hideous, hideous stuff, but it's fun to look back on and remember fondly.
I HATED all the fashion in Season 4. It just seemed a little to hippy/witchy/alternative. All the long skirts and loose-fitting top were just too much.
Seasons 6 & 7 are my favourite seasons as far as the fashion goes. Some awesome outfits there.

I hate Willow and Tara's outfits in Once More, With Feeling. They were hideous.
"Guys were checking you out, Tara!"
"Nah. They were just staring at the ugliness that we're wearing."
