I'm a guy who, unlike many guys, is more drawn to female superheroes than male ones. I'm also gay so its not like I only like these female heroes b/c they were sexy costumes or their bodies, cuz that clearly isn't the case But i dont know, i sometimes buy action figures and i wonder how it would seem if my room had all these female action figures on display? is this weird that i dont really care as much about male heroes? Unless its either Gambit or Hulking/Wiccan of course

I don't think its that weird.
Granted, for me Batman is number one the whole way. But after that, I find the female equivalent of many other heroes just more interesting for some reason. I like Batgirl over Robin. Not a huge fan of Superman but a good fan of Supergirl. Spiderwoman is definately more interesting than Spiderman.

Probably because as a gay person you relate to female superheroes more easily than male superheroes. Which I don't mean offensively, I'm also gay, and I definitely generally like female characters more than male characters. Especially when most male superheroes are all heterosexual, there's a certain divide/space there that makes it more difficult to relate to them as people; whereas studies have shown that homosexuals often have thinking patterns more akin to a heterosexual of the opposite gender than heterosexuals of their own gender.
So most superheroes represent a majority norm, that of the heterosexual white man. It's much easier to connect to someone that in some ways is at a similar social disadvantage as you, that being a woman. It's empowering to see a character you can relate to rise above people's expectations.

I don't think it's "weird". Judging by the amount of gay males on this forum alone, Buffy seems to have a large gay male following. I don't know why that is exactly, but strong females have a tendency to draw a gay fanbase for some reason. I don't know the psychology of it, or if anyone does, but I'd say that a female superhero is more easily relatable for gay men? Buffy takes on both masculine and feminine stereotypical gender roles and is forced to reconcile the two parts, which may be related to the conflicted feelings gay men endure in today's society. That's my two cents.

I think many people prefer female superheroes, possibly because there aren't so many of them so they're more individual. It's also possible that as it's more normal for superheroes to be male, creators of superheroes put more effort into making sure the female ones are likeable so people don't automatically dislike them for being different. And then there's the idea that female superheroes have more personality and quirkiness, as opposed the the males ones which tend to be more along the lines of 'Me strong. Me save world.' if you get what I mean. Obviously not all male superheroes are stupid... you can tell they're supposed to be clever, they often wear glasses . But if we take a look at the likeability of our heroes in the buffyverse, we have Buffy herself who I won't go too deeply into because we all like her already. Then Angel is the hero on his own show, and he's a vampire so I think he counts as a superhero 'cos he has super powers (from this rule Batman is not a superhero). Angel is a lot less likeable, he has lees personality, he makes decisions the viewer can't identify with, and he's moody like all the time. Okay I got distracted half way through writing this and I have absolutely no idea where this was going or what my point was... So I'll leave it there.

Hey its nice to know people know what I'm talking about As much as its hard to admit, gay men are not like the typical heteronormative superheroes. So nobody's ever heard of a straight guy liking female superheroes for non-obnoxious reasons? Its a good point, being able to relate to female characters because they dont fit the sterotypical image of a big muscular, manly, white defender of the people. Plus female hero stories do put a focus on personality and who they are as a person behind the hero... Like right now i was thinking of getting an action figure of Stephanie Brown in her new Batgirl costume, she hasn't been the most amazing Batgirl to date, but the new series and how it focuses on her personal life and struggles as well, it makes her very likeable....

So nobody's ever heard of a straight guy liking female superheroes for non-obnoxious reasons? Well, I like X-23 because she's very hot and sexy BUT her backstory is very interesting. Female clone of Wolverine, raised to be a merciless killer with no emotions, trying to fit in as a 'normal' person, under the guidance of the man she was bred to surpass and kill. Yep, a very interesting background, which drew me towards X-23 more than her looks

I'm all for female super hero's. Like most males, I like the tight cloths etc, but it's not just that. I notice that the fight scenes are generally more energetic, less big weapons and generally have a better story line.

I am a straight woman and love female superheroes way more than male ones. I don't know what it is, maybe because they are pretty and sexy but super strong and powerful, the way I want to see myself as being.

I use to have no interest in female heroes, until Buffy. She was the first female character i ever got into and became a fan of. She opened my mine to the fact that just becase im a guy, does not mean I can't enjoy and relate to characters of the other sex. I also love Lighting from Final Fantasy 13. Shes awsome.

@ rouge11(first post)
I don't think it's that weird. Seems completely normal too me. Could be because I'm like that myself.
Maybe I watched one too many action movies and thought "Meh" and then saw Buffy and feel in love? I just always seem to prefer my heroes to be female. Could be because I was bullied as a child by boysand bought into the girl power thing. Maybe female heros just have something males don't. I mean, not to sound sexist, but men and women are different.

I don't think this is weird it all. I'm gay, too, and I also find myself more drawn to female superheroes. But the only female superheroes I like is Buffy and the Charmed Ones. I'm not a fan of any comic books except for Buffy and Charmed.

I don't find it weird to prefer female superheroes, but I think I like male and female pretty equally. Maybe I like females superheroes a tiny bit more, but not much.

The appeal of heroines for me is on one hand the natural result of being surrounded and raised by diverse women for years without many strong male figures around, and on the other hand, also the result of the lack of male heroes who are emotionally vulnerable and defy traditional, privileged white heterosexual male expectations.
That's why characters like Michonne (The Walking Dead), Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Storm, and Zoe Washburne always appealed to me more than most male heroes. I also love Octavia E. Butler's many strong female characters: Lauren Olamina, a hyperempath in the Parables series, Dana, a time traveler in Kindred, Shori, a young vampire in Fledgling, among others.
Regardless, I don't use gender as a deciding factor of how much I like a character or not.

spurtyknowledge: "also the result of the lack of male heroes who are emotionally vulnerable and defy traditional, privileged white heterosexual male expectations. " I so get what you mean! Male superheroes today, and in the past, are always the darker, badass character whose so violent and only feels anger, hurt, or nothing at all. Where are all the male vulnerable characters? the ones who show that deep down they're just human beings like everybody else (unless they're not of human origin)? I grew up surrounded by women too, and i tend to get along with them better. I do like Gambit and Wiccan/ Hulking from the Young avengers though, yes because they're a gay couple, but also that the tenderness that they show to each other and others is rare to see. As for female heroes, I like Huntress, Batgirl (the new one and previous one), Oracle, Storm, Elektra, Buffy, Willow, Sydney (from the tv show Alias), Juliet (from Lost), Many of the female doctors on Grey's Anatomy, and the sailor scouts

it is true, girls kick more ass in the comics. I also find that its offesnive sometimes how male artists draw female characters. Like have you seen recent drawings of Psylocke? Her breasts are like bigger than her head! Does she not have any back pain? Anybody like the Birds of Prey?
