Well, maybe she should stop with the "staged", and get with the program. Drawing photorealistic faces is a talent, but so is drawing figures that don't look like some of the mediocre Top Model contestants.

Thanks for the link! <3 The composition looks really strange to me. I'm guessing she's meant to be fighting Angel rather than using his body to jump off of in order to hit someone else (as it would seem from that cover). Also, isn't that Spike's wardrobe he's wearing? Tucked in t-shirt, tight jeans, the belt.. at least it's a huge step up from his Twilight costume.
Gotta agree with droolingpumpkin, I was pretty underwhelmed as to the surprise factor. I had already seen the preview pages for 38 where Angel gets possessed by kitty!twilight so didn't expect him to play nice. That is spike's clothes on angel. The jacket is pretty interchangeable, but the shirt is unmistakeable. Two thoughts... ...that head looks somewhat, well, pasted on and out-of-sync with that body. Though maybe the artist was just rushed ...they did make a point before in Always Darkest that "she can't even tell us apart. It's the outfits." Either that's a very snerk-worthy bit of irony, that the artist who drew Always Darkest then draws the wrong outfit, or there's something significant here. In which case, either that head is a fake-out, and it's really Spike on the cover, or something bizarro happens in the issue to merge/swap the two vamps.

The Chen cover has been added to the original post. io9 released a decent-grade pic today, so at least it's not grainy.

comparing the SMG look Jo did for #40 and #39 I guess its hit and miss... the cover could've been done a little better. When Jo did the free fall for issue #16 I loved it, even in the TOYL TPB where Buffy is swinging her scythe back and its an under the jaw pic, Jo made the image LOOK like SMG... I'm just not feeling it here. Even with Angel she's hit and miss. I loved issue #35 because it was a straight frontal shot of Angel, very identical to some images from S3 Angel... but this one, I get its in motion but still...

And Buffyfest have a better image of the cover HERE. The link also contains Scott Allie's rationale for why they concealed the cover until #38 was released. Basically, for the very reason I deduced earlier on.

The only way I'd be surprised next issue is if the Seed is not broken (as we've been made to believe it will) and the demons are banished some alternative way, perhaps at some other ridiculously tragic cost. At this point I don't think Willow is going to allow the Seed to be broken, no matter what.
What I expect from this issue: - Buffy and Angel fighting - Some unexpected ~twist~ that results in a death of a major character (Giles or Dawn) - Willow going dark again, becoming the rightful protector, fighting Angel, breaking the Twilight "spell", staying dark and embodying the Seed until Aluwyn comes in and saves the day somehow - Some flashforwards of next season
It's so exciting (and a tiny bit frustrating) being so close to the end and having no idea what will happen! Can't wait for next month!

I'm probably asking a dumb question here, but I haven't had the chance to read all the interviews -- are we for sure that someone is going to die?
I know they keep hinting at "tragic loss", but I'm thinking that points more to the loss of the slayer army. My guess is that we'll see a huge trimming down of all the slayers: back to a handful, or even back to just Buffy.
I just don't see anyone major being done with, not this "season", because (1) there will be so many stories and characters needed for Season 9 and (2) "most" of the time (not all) when characters died on the show, they were leaving it for other reasons, or to push one of the core characters further. Not really a need to write up an exit in this format!

Oh, you may never know. They might change it and kill someone just to mess us up and have us eager for season 9

Scott Allie told us a long time ago that someone we know by name is going to die. With all the hype they've been giving us about how tragic this ending is going to be, I can't imagine getting out of it without at least one major Scooby death.

I'm not holding my breath for #39. I doubt anything that sad or emotional will really happen. The big betrayal schtick really ticked me off when it was Angel....again.

Besides it wouldn't be Joss if someone didn't die. That's the trick... he knows we are expecting it, so no one dies. White hats win, black hats lose and everything has a simple solution, and they all go off somewhere and live happily ever after, and no season 9. And Tara comes back.

Well, I mean, it's possible that Satsu could die, outside fighting the demons, and it would be tragic for Buffy in a way. It would be a death of someone we know by name. Still, I just don't see them killing any of the main scoobies now except the possibility of Giles or Xander. Dawn's injured and up in the military tent. I think the last cover is a trick -- there's room for two more heads there in the black area.

Satsu has basically been relegated to a chorus-girl role since "Swell," and Buffy's sexual exploits and fantasies since WatG have been a wall-to-wall sausage party, so I don't think killing off Satsu would have much resonance now. And Scott has said that Joss has further plans for her. Plus, gratuitous lesbian-killing is probably something Joss would prefer to avoid.

Do you think if Willow goes all protector with the seed, Kennedy (who's in the Hellmouth fighting) might get pushed aside for her power OR maybe see that Willow's been unfaithful if Aluwyn appears to save Willow... anyways, this might lead to Satsu and Kennedy getting together. They both have that connection of liking core characters.

I didn't really see much spark between Satsu and Kennedy in "Swell." I think it would be too much a case of "they're the two lesbians, so they have to get together."
I still hope that one way or another, Buffy and Satsu's feelings toward each other will get addressed in season 9.
I do think a Willow/Kennedy breakup is likely because of Aluwyn. Though Joss may keep them together just to torture all the Kennedy-haters.

Love the reference to the "Always Darkest" webcomic... and Spike's reference to his and Angel's little "experiment"...
Five pages into the climactic issue, and I still have no idea what will happen. Xander seems to be thinking about some sort of noble self-sacrifice, but what could he possibly do?
There's a hell of a lot of action to compress into the remaining... what, 17 pages of story? I have a feeling we're in for some very sudden Anya-like death.

It can all come to an abrupt end really quickly. All it takes is a well-aimed crack (hah!) at the Seed. Or hey... if they're all expendable, which is the "big picture" view on things, Giles could very well be setting off some major explosives under them right this moment.
I find it interesting that Buffy and Angel!Twilight can now actually hurt each other again. As in draw blood, smash each other hard-type hurt. First you watched them frak. Now watch them kick the tar out of each other.

Oh my god! Beautiful artwork, first of all. This preview was so good and made me totally psyched for the issue. I think I enjoyed these six pages more than all of issue 38. Can't. Wait.
