Love Chen cover. I made this so you can compare the covers. Thank you! And how much better Chen has become, in depicting Buffy's features and emotions, it is amazing!!

I just love that Chen cover, I wonder if the broken scythe is symbolic for the end of the slayer army?

Veiriti, I mean the first season of Buffy. You can say the opposite? the first Scoobies they were, I think we can agree at least on this. Cordelia is missing, but there's Faith. On Spike I have not said anything. I have no idea what will be its role in this matter. I do not think he will die, all the magic this far remain. The breaking of seed eliminate the magic in the future, but that which already exists will not be eliminated. I would not give so much importance to the magic of 'amulet, Do not forget that in the end, the amulet was only an instrument created by Lindsey to strike Angel. No, Spike will not die, and there will also be in season nine. Also, I do not believe that Angel still listen to "Twilight" and I do not believe that Angel has received his Shanshu.
I do not want to raise controversy, believe me. But seeing the second cover made me think of the first Scoobies. This is an objective fact, on which there is little we'll discuss.

Janas, I’m not arguing with you, hell no! I’m just saying I loved the Buffy’s team more like they were on Seasons 5,6,7 with Spike. Sorry, but Spike fit much better with the Scooby gang, than Angel by my opinion. I mean he works well with Willow, Xander, even with Giles. In these 2 issues Spike works well with them again, while Angel really doesn’t fit… Angel was good in his own show with his team – Cordy, Wesley, Gun, Fred and Doyle. He had his good moments on the Buffy’s show of course, but he was much more interesting with his team. I didn’t like Angel much in the first Buffy season, but I really loved him in his own show. I love his character in the IDW comics, but I barely can stand him here. In the end of issue 37 the Twilight lion like creature is speaks with him calling him “Father”. So Angel still listening to this evil power. And that beastie wants him to finish what he has started. I’m curious what Angel would do to finish the birth of his horrible spawn? Another space-frak with Buffy or something worse?! About the Shanshu… I’m not sure, but Angel is walking in the daylight here, so he probably still has his super-duper-powers or he has got the Shanshu… No, you didn’t say anything, honey! That’s my speculation… Honesty I don’t know what to think! But the lack of Spike on the last cover is so indicative … he’s not with the others – probably is dead or trapped into another dimension… I had got another idea before about the new-seed-cork-key – Dawn. Just like in Lost. When the old Seed/Cork is broken it has to been replaced by a new one and new protector and to restore the balance between the worlds. The Protector he would be trapped (anchored) forever there in the eternal night, in some dimensional trap... I was thinking Xander will be the new Protector or Angel to pay for his Twilight’s sins, but probably poor Spike will be the Agnus Dei again. Anyway – as I've mentioned, I’m only speculating here…

well spike died once(came back in angel, but he died).... what the cover tells me is that dawn will die, and spike will be gone(cause he likes dawn, and with her gone he would blame buffy....), and the gang will no longer be.... at least for the frist issues, of season 9.... im very very very very afraid of the last 2 issues.... very very...

It's interesting that Spike and Dawn are the two principal characters missing from Jeanty's cover... yet there is a rising sun in the background (symbolizing Dawn) and a Sunnydale sign (symbolizing Spike). And the sign has not been knocked over.
And the other characters are all dressed in black, but don't seem to be particularly unhappy.
There are a lot of ways to interpret that.

Anyway – as I've mentioned, I’m only speculating here… Yes, of course. I understood. Also I am speculating :)and we do not know yet how he will respond Angel. I like how you described the scene, and feels as a kind of hope. A new dawn

I love the covers, especially the Jo Chen one. Buffy just looks so heartbroken and defeated and the scythe is all beaten up and broken. Looks like its been through quite a battle. I also love how this cover is a mirror to the first issue cover. Seems fitting, imo. I really like Jeanty's cover. Is there a reason they're wearing all black or is this just coincidence? (I've heard some speculation of mourning but boy I hoe not). Also, judging by the appearance of the crater and the sign (which I love, btw) we can assume they are returning to Sunnydale? And How is Angel standing in the sun. Maybe it is a sunset and not a sunrise? Can't wait for this issue!

But it seems now to be restored, the old Scoobies, the Scoobies of the origins, plus the presence of Faith. Restored?! Oh, come on! The Scoobies never will be the same without Spike! Buffy, Spike, Willow, Giles, Xander, and Faith that would be the perfect Scooby gang for me! Spike is easily one of the best Buffyverse character but he's hardly a core Scooby. He was only a Scooby in four of eight seasons. The only core Scoobies are Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles. They were the ones who started it all, who did the Primeval spell, who had the hallway scene in "Chosen".

Both covers are amazing. Many people have already noted the #1/#40 Chen comparisons, but I love the visual representation of "twilight" in Jeanty's cover. Powerful stuff.

Spike's gonna be fine. For realsies. (Where have you been dude! I hope you're right Pat!! As for the cover...the first one is a great closure echoing #1 (makes me wish I had gotten that cover...) The second one... I don't know. Where Joss is concerned I'm always on pins and needles regarding Spike. It would make all things simple, tied up and easy if he were not here.

Working on my writing and making steps on the quest to get published. Maybe check in bookstores in a year and a half for a surprise. Annnnd maybe comic shops sooner than that, but I don't want to speak too soon. But yeah, Spike is definitely going to make it out. It's the other Brit that I'd be worried about...

What if Dawn was sent/trapped in an alternative dimension, and Spike either yanked her there because he needs a key (he did pop in above London through a dimension-hole-thingy), or he followed her in because he's the impulsive sort who would tackle someone getting yanked into another dimension? Protecting niblet and all. Season 9 has them trying to rescue Dawn (and Spike by extension), while Spike and Dawn have their own shenanigans. All that from a sign and a rising sun.

Here we have confirmation that... Angel, Spike and Willow will all have their own spinoff series in season 9, and are therefore guaranteed to survive season 8, one way or another. Which increases the chances, IMO, that Mr. Xander Harris will not be joining us in the future Buffyverse.

Well we know they don't think Xander is capable of carrying his own title, so maybe he just stays with Buffy. I think they have to keep at least one of the original characters with her, otherwise it won't feel like BTVS, at least not to me.

And yea, I think Xander will stay with Buffy. He's the only guy to never left the Scoobies, so why start now?

And yea, I think Xander will stay with Buffy. He's the only guy to never left the Scoobies, so why start now? Xander is always going to be a secondary character in the Buffyverse. Let's face it, he's an extraordinary guy, but he's not special, which Xander's come to accept. Come to think of it, I read somewhere that Xander was initially going to cross over to Angel for its fifth season after BtVS wrapped, but the producers didn't think the character would fit. (sidebar: can someone confirm if this is true? I can no longer find the info online)
Conversely, Willow has the potential to carry a title on her own, even more so than Faith or Giles I believe. The Willow one-shot was successful and even on her TV days the character fit very well on Angel, showing that Willow doesn't need Buffy.
In regards to Spike, we all know the character can be independent from either Angel or Buffy thanks to Brian Lynch. Even before comics, a film for Spike was planned, so producers obviously felt comfortable with a live-action Spike spin-off.
I really hope that these spin-off series run for a long while and can carry themselves individually even while under the Season Nine umbrella.
