I was thinking about this. I didn't have an association with the term queer and being gay or lesbian until the show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

My feeling is that the word "queer" has been used up. It doesn't have any impact or flavor left, no matter how it's used. That's too bad, in a way. In its old meaning of "odd" or "peculiar," it was very useful.

I was thinking about this. I didn't have an association with the term queer and being gay or lesbian until the show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The first time I heard it used in the mainstream was an episode of "The Simpsons". The entire episode was about Homer questioning Bart's orientation and eventually his own (a bit), and befriended a shop owner played by independent film director John Waters. It not only used the word a fair amount, but every stereotype imaginable was parodied throughout the episode.
