Hey guys! I know it's been a while since I've posted around here, but I need a little help! I'm teaching a composition class, and we are getting ready to move into a literature unit. I am starting the unit the class period before Halloween, and I want to use an episode of Buffy to open! The students are learning to analyze fiction. I just want an episode that we can easily analyze. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks guys!

Agreed heartily. Also, you gotta rockin' banner. T&S is <3 J: Hush would be cool. You could discuss the primal fear that the Gentlemen cause, perhaps?

My first idea would be Halloween or Fear, Itself. But I gotta agree that Hush is perfect. ;D A very Halloween-ish episode, and it has a lot going for it. I know this may be out there, but Once More, With Feeling is pretty fun. And it stands on its own fairly well, IMO.

I honestly hadn't thought about "Hush" until you guys mentioned it. My big worry in teaching the Halloween episodes is the difficulty understanding the characters' backgrounds going in. "Hush" might be nice. I was thinking about "Halloween" for the "character development" shown in it . . . it's a tough call! So many great episodes. I feel like I could teach an entire semester of Buffy!

I feel like Hush would be best for it's creep factor, and the fact that it has a clear thesis about communication, which would be interesting to talk about when analysing fiction.

I agree with "Hush." It is an excellent "scary vibe" ep that shouldn't require much in the way of backstory. Plus, it would be an excellent episode to discuss and analyze, as it presents a very clear message.

I agree that "Hush" would be a good choice , but I think that "Conversation with Dead People" would be interesting too.

I think "Hush" sounds like a good one, althought with it being so close to Halloween I would be tempted to look at the season 4 Halloween party episode, I think the anti-climatic ending etc. would give them all soemthing to discuss; it seems to have more levels to it than the Halloween episode where they all turn into their costumes

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I'm definitely leaning toward "Hush" or Season 4's Halloween Episode, "Fear, Itself." I think I may go with "Hush" simply because it's more serious and easier to analyze. I feel like "Fear, Itself," while great for us Buffy fans, is a little harder to approach as a standalone. Sadly, only two of my twenty-two students have ever watched or heard of Buffy. What's wrong with kids these days?!

Before you show the episode I would still shortly recap what has happened up until this point in the show. It might make it easier for the students to relate and follow.

I'm too late. I guess it's unanimous. I love when everybody can agree like this.

I think with Hush, you have to go into how you can tell a story without dialog. Just the setting and the feel of the story can get it done. You could also bring up how The Body, was done without any music, and that gave it a creepier, realistic vibe. Using these two episodes I can think of a whole lesson plan about what goes into a story to set the tone...

I would have said Pangs as the moral and legal dilemmas in the storyline would be interesting to discuss, such as what is a 'law'and who decides what is legal and what isn't against what is moral/ethical? In our life our government is a the law maker, but does this mean that there are no other laws? Buffy seems to be the 'law' in the show as when she makes a decision the others feel they 'have' to follow as you would any other law, but ethically or morally it may not seem right.
