It is now my favorite Joss written episode. Amber is so great.
The writing is superb, and it has such a great ending.
Amber definitley should have been in the opening credits after this episode.

While I can't agree that it is my favorite Joss episode, it was a very well done episode nonetheless. Amber Benson was really great, and I agree about the ending. One of the better endings of the entire series (although I don't think any ending can top the final scene in "Earshot" ).

Amber Benson could have been a regular from the start of Season 5. She had a more relevant role to the story then Anya ever did. Sadly it just didn't get negotiated that way. Damned network contracts

I'm glad this was added. You know, I never even thought about this before...
Yeah, Tara totally should have been added as a regular cast member at the end of this episode.

I voted No, although not because I thought she wasn't important, I just think that it isn't important. As adding her later cruely added to her shock death I think it was worth-while to hold off adding her to the credits.

Amber should have been added as a regular. By then she would've had a bigger role than just a minor character.

But I propose a question... who was a more important supporting character? LORNE OR TARA? They both were on the their respective shows for a couple seasons before they were added.

I think it is hard to choose between the two, as I feel as if they both got the shaft when it came to appearing in the opening credits.
Lorne should have been added by the middle of Season 3 (or even the beginning), and Tara certainly deserved a spot at the beginning of Season 5.

She shouldn't have been in the credits in season 4 but definaltey when season 5 started new season, new credits she should have been added or at least when Riley left. Ther was an open space for her. BUT We all know why she wasn't added..it was because Joss wanted to keep her out of the credits so fans would bitch and then add her into the credits then <bang>..."your shirt" Taras's dead... Good times lol

Tara and Lorne were both fairly useless really... sorry fans. Nah kidding. I'd say Tara was more important as one of our heroes. I think Lorne was actually better as a side character. He became pretty redundant when he joined the group and left his club behind.

When I first watched Family I would have never guessed that it was a Joss episode. When Joss writes an episode, it's usually an epic finale, or some kind of 'special' episode, but in a way Family feels like just another Buffy episode. In retrospect though, it makes sense because Family brings to the forefront a lot of subtle clues and plot threads that were sprinkled back in Season 4 that kind of left you going "huh?", and I guess Joss wanted to handle the reason behind them himself. It's also the only Tara-centric episode we get One thing that always bugged me about this episode is the ending, where Buffy and everyone stand up for Tara and say she's family. Huh? Weren't they just talking about how she's odd and they don't get her? Has any of them even had a conversation with Tara? I guess in order to be endeared to the Scoobies you have to mess up and nearly get everyone killed first. What Buffy probably should have said at the end was "You may be her biological family, but one of my people is really fond of her so she stays."

Oz was in 39 episodes Riley was in 31 episodes and Tara was in 47 in total
So, kind of interesting that she was in more than both of the series regulars.
Should faith have been in the credits? She was in 20 episodes. Hmm.

Tara should have been in the opening credits for season 5. But. The cast list in the beginning of season 5 was the biggest it ever was. And to add Amber to that payment of regular would have been, Idk hard for them? And I bet they were picking between Emma, and Amber to add, and they picked the more well liked (Anya was at the time). So I bet that's what happened. But what makes me think is that on the back of the dvds, and trivia guides and other stuff for season six. it considers Tara a regular and puts her in the list. I just think that is kinda cool

I don't think she was made a regular because
a)they wanted to save money b)they had no room in the intro c) Joss wanted to wait to put amber in the credits until the episode he could kill her. He had wanted to have a character in the credits and then kill that person of, since the first episode.

Very underrated episode. It's one of those random Joss episodes that gets lost in the shuffle sometimes (that and Lie to Me) in that it's not exactly a groundbreaking episode...but a necessary one for the characters involved. And heh...who'd have thought a one-off Buffy guest star would end up being nominated for an Oscar a couple of years later and pretty much be on her way to becoming an A-lister Maybe I'm having a brain fart but who nominated for an Oscar?
