I am a huge fan of both Buffy and Angel TV series, but never read any of the comics. I heard about season 8 coming out in comic form so I picked them up and read them. I found them entertaining and decided to get more into the comic book version of the buffyverse. This left me a little bit overwhelmed with where to begin.
I haven't read or bought any other comics in over 13 years and then I was 10 years old and would just buy random ones off the shelf. So my knowledge of comic book organization is non existent. As much as I can tell there are 60 something comics of the main buffy comic story line, and there are about 8 or so other series out there that aren't directly related to the comic. After the comics have been out an extended amount of time it seems they release multiple comics in a singular book form called a volume. This seems good for me, because I don't really want to go buy 90 comic books individually:)
It looks as if there are 17 volumes of the main comic, and each series has its own separate volume. This means that there are still around 25 or so different volumes to pick from. This is where my dilemma comes in, which to start with?
Are there any of the comics that are generally accepted as must reads? Should I try to buy them in chronological order or just pick and chose the volumes that seem interesting to me? If I pick up a random volume that I like will my extensive knowledge of the show be enough to guide me through the plot, or will I be lost without reading all the previous comics. I know the comics don't necessarily follow the show and was wonder if there is a strong coherent time line from comic to comic?
I also have questions about the Omnibus volumes, are there a collection of multiple volumes of the comic books? If so are they pretty comprehensive in there overall coverage of the comic book storyline? Reading them would seem like a logical starting point for a new reader, but I am still a little unclear to exactly what is contained in each version of the Omnibus. If anyone could fill me in on what each one contains or if anyone has a link that describes what individual books are contained in each omnibus/volume of buffy comics that would be very helpful
