I know that the "tales of the" comics are written by writers of the show, so are they considered canon?

I liked them, but some most of them are sad. I would have bought the vampire-comic for the Spike-story alone tough.

Yeah they're canon. I think that TOTV is much better than TOTS though. "TOT Slayers" was very "meh", "TOT Vampires" had a couple of stand out stories, cameos from familiar characters plus an awesome framing story by Joss himself.

I loved TOTS. My personal favorite was Righteous. I mean the story is soo powerful. And The Innocent is good too.
