I hope it's not for After the Fall.. it's too late in the series to enter the puppets into the mix..

A mini series might be nice like spike shadow puppets but after the fall to me is to intense to bring in puppets. It Worked in season 5 but in a continuous series takeing place in hell I would find it cheesy

Smile Time is a very love-it-or-hate-it episode. I tend to agree with Pat that the whole puppet concept worked better for Spike: Shadow Puppets than it did for Smile Time, both because of the medium and because of the writing.

Whenever I rewatch the series, I always skip that episode. It's one of the few episodes of the either series that I can't stand to watch (along with I Robot, You Jane and another one from BS1).

I LOVE Smile Time. I was very surprised when I first starting talking with other forum members here and learned there were some people who disliked the episode. I think it's brilliant and hilarious. The not so subtle poke at the networks about the way they do business and how it's making Angel the Series into a useless puppet. The way the networks bleed the creative process and their desire for a mindless addicted audience all in the name of the nest egg.
The episode moved beyond the season 5 story to comment and satirize the show. Angel was the puppet of the Senior Partners in season 5 the way Angel the Series was a puppet of the WB. It was both relevant to the season's arc and to the reality of where AtS stood during that tumultuous year. For those of us who lived through the sorrow of AtS being cancelled and the bitter feelings towards the network who pulled the plug, it was a creative response to the (IMO) idiocy of cancelling AtS.
I've never really understood why some fans dislike it so much. Perhaps they missed the context that the episode was written in? I'd be interested in hearing why exactly people dislike Smile Time. I think it's one of the most brilliant episodes.

I agree, Emmie "Smile Time" has always been one of my favorite episodes, for most of the reasons you listed. It was a highly creative episode, and one of the series' stand outs for me, (along with "Waiting in the Wings," "Spin the Bottle," and "Not Fade Away") in terms of creativity.

Never really thought of it like that, and I've got to say that it's a ridiculously interesting take on it. It's sad that season five was such a pain in the ass, apparently. I really enjoyed that year.

I originally just thought it was handled really well, made season 5 amazing, and really was funny. But now that you added all this other stuff into it, I might just have to re-watch this episode with all this in mind. Wow.

The December solicits for IDW feature the following...it would make sense to me that the image from Chris Ryall's blog is for another issue of this run. Angel: Smile Time #1 Joss Whedon (story) • Scott Tipton (w) • David Messina, photo (a) Joss Whedon’s classic “Smile Time” episode of Angel became a cult favorite and led to a comic book sequel, Spike: Shadow Puppets. Now look back at that fan-favorite episode, adapted here into an all-new, three-part miniseries by the Angel: Masks teams of Scott Tipton and original IDW Angel artist David Messina. The Angel Puppet gets his own variant photo cover, too. *2 regular covers will be shipped in a 1-to-1 ratio. FC • 32 pages • $3.99 Covers (although the art cover is listed as Messina in the solicits, it says Runge on the image!):

So they're just retelling the same story?... that's not very creative...

I love Smile Time, but do I need to buy it as a comic? Well, IDW will probably still get my money because I'm a sucker.....

Smile Time is ok, but personally I think its a bit overrated. A few years ago the official Angel magazine voted it the 2nd best episode of Angel. wtf? I wouldn't say it that *good*, it's not even the funniest ep, I'd say "Guise Will Be Guise" and "Spin The Bottle" are a lot funnier
As for this comic, hmm, just an adaption of an episode? Whats the point really?

Love the episode, but just telling it as a comic will be kinda... weird... :/
