I just thought of something that has puzzeled me for years.
Remember in Prophecy Girl, final episode in season 1, when Buffy, Xander and Angel walks towards the school(coolest scene in the whole season btw) and without slowing down or raising her arms (or did she?) she knocks down "a bad guy"?
I have three reasons for Buffy's sudden telekenisis(the power to move objects with one's mind);
1. It's not Buffy, it's Xander or Angel with a long stick that knocks down the vamp.
2. Joss "gave" Buffy new powers. After she died she said that felt stronger, and on the roof she was able to fight the masters' thrall. Perhaps Joss choose not to explore Buffy's sudden burst of "mind-powers" in season two because he wanted to keep things simple? Telekenisis on top of Buffy's other powers might have been at tad too much. Or perhaps that one "air-punch" was all the power(except her mind-resistance) that she got back from the other side.
3. Joss thought it would look cool and just decided to have the air-punch.
I'm going with option 2. You?
(I really hope that I remember this scene right)

Haha, I like your theories, but I do think I remember the "punch" sound effect. And also, how could you like that scene?! I think it would of worked out a lot better if they didn't use the freakin' theme song. Sarah's delivery of, "Oh look, a bad guy", made it even worse. It was the only time, I can think of, that I questioned Joss' ability to direct.

It was a nice intentionally cheesy scene, fun for sh*ts and giggles. I like how the music randomly cuts out when the bad guy hits the floor. Its like wow, that was anti-climatic...
It was bad, but it was Season 1...

I also really hate that scene. Using the show's theme song was not necessary at all and didn't actually fit in the show either. The music video walk they did back to the school was bad as well.

That entire scene was just bad... it looked so corny and as wyndam said the theme music playing really didn't fit But then again alot of season 1 was corny and i love it anyway

I LOVE the scene. It's corny and action and hero-saving at it's worse and it's just what was needed.
Buffy had cried, died and been depressed about her helplessness and then WHAM, we get a powerwalk. True, more fitting for a action-movie than a tv-show, but I don't think that Joss had found Buffy's "soul" yet and was still exploring. I usually hate tv-shows and movies where the background music take up to much space, but I can forgive Joss for this scene, because I felt enpowered when I watched that scene.
I felt "Yay! Take that death, I'm back and I'm strong."
True, I was about 11 when I saw the scene the first time, and I thought that pokemon was cool...

I loved that scene because it was just cool. I mean, Buffy blows past the vampires without stopping! I mean, the true Slayer moment and not letting anything stand in her way when she knows what she has to do. Corny? Yeah, a little, but it showed how bad-a** she is.

Haha, that's so weird because I loved it too when I was younger, it's weird how things change. For instance, when I was 11-12, Bad Eggs was my favorite episode.......

Let me guess, your favorite scene was when Buffy crawled out of the hole? I get the same kind of feeling when I watch that scene as when I watch the propechy girl scene. And when Buffy catches the sword in front of her face in Becoming. Willow fighting Glory. Buffy rising from the ground in Chosen. I feel a new thread coming on.

I definitely agree with your option #2. That scene was so rediculously cheesy. Oh, Joss. Maybe Buffy had some mystical temporary after death powers, who knows. I do like the bad guy line, but sans the music, and her prom shoes.

I must raise my hand and admit that I too loved Bad Eggs and picked that as my favorite until I got older and realized that there were so many better episodes. Although I will also admit that the moment where Buffy kills the egg monster and crawls out is still on my list of best Buffy moments ever.

I think the cheesiness factor really speaks to where Buffy (the show) lived at the time. It was a mid-season replacement on the WB-the network know for cheesy teen dramas like Dawson's Creek.

I thought Buffy tripped the vampire instead of punching it. I could be wrong but I always thought that. I love Season One as I always viewed it as one long B movie with great dialogue. Especially, Prophecy Girl.

I love that scene. It was cheesy but so needed after Buffy had just been brought back. Also, I think she punched him with her fist. I don't think we see her hands or arms. I love Season 1!
