A lot of Buffy/Angel episodes, especially stand alones, use plots from classic horror movies, and use them to put their own special spin on the premise. Help me complete the list... Here's some i can think of. Go Fish - Creature Of The Black Lagoon Rm w/a Vu - Poltergeist I've Got You Under My Skin - The Exorcist Bad Eggs - Alien/Aliens (facehuggers ) Expecting - Rosemary's Baby Dead End - Idle Hands Habeas Corpses - Resident Evil/ Dawn Of The Dead/ Night Of The Living Dead Soulless - Silence Of The Lambs Unleashed - Ginger Snaps/ Ginger Snaps 2 : Unleashed/ Why We Fight - 20000 Leagues Under The Ocean (yeah a stretch, I know Some Assembly Required - Frankenstein Phases - American Werewolf In London Restless - Apocalypse Now Buffy vs Dracula - ..... Storyteller - Blair Witch project Also, I know there's a movie that likely inspired the episode Shiny Happy People, and more or less the whole Jasmine thing, but I can't put my finger on it right now. i'm also sure there's good ones for Hellbound and Out Of Mind, Out of Sight. most of Season 1 of Buffy is like this. Yeah I know some of these are stretches but i'm sure you'll think of better ones.

While "Ginger Snaps" may have been the most recent film that came to mind, I'd say "Unleashed" owes its parentage to far older films than that - 1944's "Cry of the Werewolf" comes to mind, with the wolf-woman played by (wait for it...) Nina Foch (and, of course, there was the 90s syndicated series "She-Wolf of London" with Kate Hodge as the American student bitten by a werewolf while studying in England.)

I was actually waiting for someone to comment on the Ginger Snaps reference... Unleashed in a lot of ways feels like a knockoff of that movie to me, particularly the scenes where it focuses on Nina's internal changes, ie her wanting to rip her niece's throat out, craving the raw meat, etc. something that was never touched upon in any other werewolf episode in the Buffyverse, or any werewolf movie for that matter, except for Ginger Snaps which really focuses on the internal changes. That whole episode really feels like an homage to Ginger Snaps in my opinion, even the title itself is a nod to the film. This is why I put Phases and referenced older werewolf movies, because that one feels a lot more like werewolf movies of old, right down to the silly costume.
And the Die Hard reference... Lol.

Jasmine arc: Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Cordy is even watching this movie at the beginning of "Apocalypse Now-ish."

"American Werewolf In London?" "Curse of the Werewolf"? "The Wolfman"? "The Werewolf of London"? The syndicated show "Werewolf"? All of those, in one way or another, touched on the changes a werewolf goes through.

I've seen the American Werewolf movies, and I'm pretty sure I've seen the howling back in the day, but those movies still don't touch on the internal the way Ginger Snaps does. To an extent, any werewolf movie HAS to touch on it in some form, but it's rarely the impetus behind the entire film the way it is in that one.

And that's a different thing from "never touched upon in any other werewolf episode in the Buffyverse, or any werewolf movie for that matter, except for Ginger Snaps". (BTW, any number of written literature goes into it as deep or even deeper than "Ginger Snaps". While it may possibly be the first movie to be quite so blatant about using lycanthropy as a metaphor for the menstrual cycle, written fiction beat them to it long ago.) Just to be clear, though, I actually liked "Ginger Snaps"; apart from the werewolf effects, I thought it was quite well done, several cuts above the average modern horror movie. I just don't really think it's that major an influence in a genre with a couple of hundred years of literary history behind it.

"I just don't really think it's that major an influence in a genre with a couple of hundred years of literary history behind it." yeah, that and the fact that i's an indie film honestly you're probably right. it just seems that whenever I see werewolf on tv or in film it often played for cheap thrills and gore as opposed to emotional impact. Meh.

Well, I won't argue that point. That's why it took me so long to actually see "Ginger". Most modern horror films bore the crap out of me.

You gotta watch the second one. As awesome as the first one is, the second one is way better.

I'd say Bad Eggs is more of "Invasion of The Body Snatchers" than Jasmine was.

As You Were - Aliens.
The demons that hatch are very much like the one's in Alien.

The Prince of Lies from "Why We Fight" was obviously an homage to "Nosferatu".

Also, Adam was another riff on Frankenstein - and possibly even "Dark Shadows", which once did its own Frankenstein homage with an artificial man named Adam.

As You Were - Aliens. The demons that hatch are very much like the one's in Alien. In theory maybe... but in execution and design that's like.. comparing Fall Out Boy to Led Zeppelin
