Today is Tuesday, August 12, 2008.
Here are my predictions for the Buffyverse.
The comic books will continue for another five years, until Joss is too busy to oversee much and the comics have left cannon. We will continue to get comics as long as we buy them, but they won't be as exciting as Season 8 or After the Fall because they won't have Joss's cannon stamp.
Dr. Horrible will become a pop culture icon, and will possibly get a full length big screen film.
We will never get our Ripper movie, and we will eventually give up. We'll be sad about it, but after a certain point, optimism will proove moot. Until...
Ten years from now, Fox will decide to reboot Buffy in a 12 episode miniseries. It will flop, but we'll find it kind of oddly interesting.
Twenty years from now, the Johnny Depp of the day will come out that he's always wanted to play Angel, and because he's enormously popular and more than slightly rich, there will be a modern Buffy movie. We, the old fans, will come out in droves and have mixed feelings about it, but over all we'll be happy to see Buffy again.
The success of the film cues another revival series within five years. This version will be much better than the 2018 version. Not as good as the original, but still much better than anything else on TV at the time. The new show goes on for five years and has two big screen sequels.
30 years from now, another new series will start, based on Buffy's world but with another Slayer as the main character. This version is very popular with a brand new bunch of fans.
35 years from now, the series will die again, but still be very popular.
40 years from now, most of the actors we liked from the show will either have died or be very old. The ones who are left do a radio show, straight to datafile version of the original show, which is pretty entertaining to the diehard fans that are left.

One of your predictions is very similar to what I believe the next big move for Buffy will be: A reboot of the mythology with new actors, maybe even some new characters. Hollywood loves a remake, and I could see in maybe 15 years or so a new theatrical movie, possibily with Joss involved. Or maybe something that Joss totally hates. Sarah Michelle Geller could make a cameo as Joyce Summers or something (she'll be hitting 40+ by then). I think it is more likely we will see something like this than the movie we all really want. Maybe the animated series or movies is still a possibility. We can dream....

If this happens, and I still remember this forum and this thread so far in the future, I'll talk to the Nobel-price guys (I'm Swedish and know were to get weapons)
and get you a Nobel-price for future-telling-stuff.
But I hope that if they do make a Buffy movie, they'll use the "old" actors to play the old characters, or start over with new actors and characters. Otherwise, I want to let it rest. Same with the comics, if Joss losses interest, I'm not sure if the comics would be that good, and then they should die. I read Spike:old wounds yesterday, and a bit seemed out of character, which is really disturbing, because it will still be left in my memory when I continue to read after the fall. it's the the character's are damaged after i read a bad fic or comic.

Those predictions are pretty good, but I doubt there will be that many remakes of the show in the future. I can see the film reboot for the franchise with new actors (because that's already happening with Johnny Depp for a 60s soap called "Dark Shadows") which might lead to a sequel and possibly a television series. Or it could be the other way around--a tv series reboot is started and from that a movie is made. But I don't think that there will be numerous reboots like there was with Dark Shadows (a 1991 12-episode series was made, then canceled due to poor rating because of the Gulf War coverage; and a 2004 pilot was ordered by the WB network only to not be picked up for the fall season.)

Sarah Michelle Geller could make a cameo as Joyce Summers or something (she'll be hitting 40+ by then). Haha! I definitely doubt there won't be any reboots in the next 10 - 30 years. BTVS might not exactly be the Doctor Who of my/our generation, but it's close. I can certainly see an upcoming director/producer deciding to continue the slayer mythos, or even remake the series like some have mentioned here. As for the comics, we have more than a year for season eight, and maybe roughly two or three years of season nine. Joss may or may not continue after that. I'm hoping he will. Either way, I certainly think that when the canon series comes to an end, Darkhorse will just go back to the regular Buffy comics.

I think the bit about the comics will prove to be fairly accurate, but I for one won't have much of an interest in anything that is overseen by Joss.
As for the actors getting older, this is exactly why the animated series is a good idea.
I would eventually like to see some recreation or expansion of what already is with new characters, etc. The mythology of Buffy has so much potential.

ok my wacky (un-realistic) predictions are that Joss will make a mini-series about 30's Buffy and Co, where she finally meets the man she will spend her life with. Following that another mini-series will be made about Buffy - The Yummy Mummy Slayer, then Buffy and Willow in their retirement home (remember Willow mentioning growing into little old lady hood with Buffy??) still kicking vampire booty with the aid of a wooden zimmer frame!

I could actually see some of these happening, and I can definitely see what jellymoff outlined happening somewhere down the line.

My predictions here are strongly rooted in what happened with Dark Shadows/Star Trek/Movies from the 60's and 70's. There seems to be a definate pattern to how cult series come back time and again.

I really hope your predictions are wrong.
I'm one of the few Whedon fans who didn't really care for Dr. Horrible. It was just fluff, entertaining, but without substance. I don't think it will ever see a cinema release. Although I do think it will go down as the "original" internet series with famous actors and writers/directors and pave the way for many other similar series.
I think the comics will continue for around 5 years. Similar to the run of the television series.
I also think we will see a Ripper movie.
I think I'd only be interested in a film if they had the original cast and writers/directors/producers. Like the Sex and the City film.
I also hope the industry has the sense to leave the Buffyverse alone, unless they have Joss' approval and creative imput.

I really wouldn't be interested in seeing a remake of Buffy (in television or film) unless it involved the original actors and Joss and Co. It is simply too hard for me to envision anybody else playing these beloved characters except for the original actors themselves. Plus, I would be weary of any remake that Joss himself isn't somehow involved in. Buffy is his baby, so my feeling is that Joss should certainly have a say if anything like this is ever done. I may actually consider a continuation of the Buffyverse with new characters, but only if Joss were involved. And hopefully we could still get some cameo appearances from original cast members.
I agree that it would be great to see the Buffy animated series as well. I for the life of me don't understand how FOX could pass this up (stupid FOX).
And hopefully Joss will stay involved with the comics for a long time. Even if he did decrease his involvement, I would probably continue to read them b/c I read the old comics and Buffy novels and such, which aren't canon either. Of course, i would love for Joss stay involved in the comics always, but if that is not to be than hopefully the stories would at least remain good, b/c all that really matters is a good story. Yes, nothing compares to Joss (and other Buffy alums) knack for storytelling, but there have been some non-Buffyverse writers out there who have still managed to tell some good stories in both comics and books. And who knows, If Joss ever has to step down from the comics, maybe some of the other writers could come in and take the reins.

I wouldnt be interested in a re-cast series at all, gives me mouth vomit thinking about it.
I'd like two big screen movies, one for Buffy and one for Angel. But I'd hope they would keep it very close to the show, all the same actors, writers etc.
I wouldn't know if Id be crazyexcited at Ripper either, Giles wasnt my favourite character in the shows and I just dont think it would hold my attention, yeah Id watch it, but thats about it.
Id love to see Buffy: Animated, but maybe in Season 8 style, and Id LOVE to see Angel: After the fall animated too... or any type of Animated, but hopefully with better animation than the piolt.
The comics, yes I like them, but I dont want to see them going on for years and years. I wouldnt want them to go down in quality or lose its canon factor anymore than it has.
I'd would mostly likely just want to give Buffy/Angel a chance on TV again, a nice prime time slot, all commercieled up. I think that would be nice, to get new fans in and give the old fans a nice change seeing Buffy back on TV, without messing with DVDs.

I would love to see the Ripper Spinoff, as I love the character of Giles.
A Buffy or Angel movie would be awesome too. Or maybe even a crossover novie where the plot involves the characters from both shows to come together.

Maybe its because im british but i would have loved to see what the bbc would have done with ripper. I dont think joss has finished with that project yet, hopefully not anyway?
I think buffy IS a show you could do a next generation type thing with because there is a reasonable framework of references to work with. But alas you can never really go back. one of the reasons i liked buffy was the characters were roughly the same age as me growing up and so we were doing high school and uni at the same time so the issues always seemed relevant to my life.

Me too, that's why i hope these predictions about 30 years from now don't come true cause i won't be around to watch them. Or i will be a bitchy old lady yelling at my grandkids that "That isn't the Buffy we had" and then launch into long boring stories about how we didn't have hovercars and such back in MY day hahaha, and we had to watch her stake vamps on televisions, not directly imported into our brains. But if i am still alive then and getting the chip- in- your- brain entertainment network, i hope it's the nursing home Buffy that angelsgirl predicts. It would be awesome. That would be what i'd be going through at the time too hahaha. They would have Xander: After the Fall which takes place after his hip surgery from falling down the stairs. Then we get to watch him eat pudding and go through the grueling trials of physical therapy. I have often told people when they laugh at me for watching Buffy over and over that i would watch it even if they only showed the boring crap like them just hanging out or eating cereal or something for hours.

I don't know about you guys, but I never want to see geriatric Buffy. Centenarian Buffy the Vampire Slayer sounds like a direct affront to the memory I have of Buffy. Unless they have extremely advanced digital technology that allows them to have rendered versions of Spike and Angel. Because, you know, immortality. Although if they could do that, they should just CGI Buffy too.
But like it or not, my predictions are my predictions. They're not wishes, they're just the way I've seen the market go.
