One of the very few episodes I didn't like at all. It was just like a kick to the nuts from the writing staff as far as I'm concerned. It was pointless and added nothing to the rest of the series, only serving to give some depressing random possibility.

Yeah, in "Chosen" when you see the town sink into the ground it appears that Sunnydale is out in the middle of no where, and is in the desert. So that kinda = no beach. This is of course the fault of Joss and the rest of the crew.

I would agree with Trey, except that in S2, Buffy and Angel fell off a boat dock, which implies that there's water close by enough to the town, and it didn't appear that way from the aerial POV.

You don't need to be on an ocean to have a boat dock. Where i live there is docks on just about every lake around, not even just the big ones you would notice from up high.

That makes sense to me, Benny. I prefer to think of Sunnydale as real in the Buffyverse. But it is open to interpretation, so either is definately possible. Sunnydale reality though, please!

Or maybe Angel already had the '67 Plymouth but you didn't see it? They could have very well driven to the dock. Faith and Buffy could have taken the bus and then walked from the bus stop to the docks without you seeing the travel.
Also, the beach was too populated to seem like it was Sunnydale. It was probably Santa Barbara (the nearest major beach if we are talking 2 hours north of L.A., which is the almost-nobody-lives-there town of Gaviota--which is basically a road between mountains and rocky cliffs over the Pacific Ocean). Remember that the map of Sunnydale was based on Santa Barbara. Then again, Sunnydale has a U.C. school. It's possible that Santa Barbara IS Sunnydale in the Jossverse.
The biggest hints are that there is a railroad on the eastern edge of town and that there was a mission in Sunnydale. All 21 missions in Alta California are built along El Camino Real (a road).
As for the desert... Go figure.

I had alway wondered about this episode and then I listened to a podcast on it. It was a while back now so i'm not sure where it is now other wise I'd post a link but: The jist was basically if it was all in Buffy's head then she wouldn't be suprised byt anything that happened on the show bacause she was the one doing it...it was all in her head so it was ll her world, she'd know about everything that was going to happen next so * She wouldn't be shocked by the whole Angel turning evil thing becasue she did it in her head * She would have know that the High School was going to blow up and Angel was going to leave Sunnydale * She would have already known that she would defeat Glory and that Giles would kill him and that she would defeta the First too & She would have even known that Warren was going to walk into the garden and shoot her and Tara because it was all in her head, pretty good reason to suggest that it was the demon poison or whatever it was that made Buffy all weird and that Sunnydale IS real.

By your reasoning I would never be scared when I have a nightmare, because I would know what my sub-conscious would throw at me. The brain is a tricky thing and we don't know it's full potential.

Hi,
New member here, and i an so thrilled that u have so many interesting topics here!
Bif fan of Buffy, and although this is an old topic, i'd like to say my opinion in this episode.
Basically, my theory is that when Buffy was first called, there was a parallel universe created, where the second girl could see Buffy's world, something that drove her crazy.
The deamon poison just made Buffy able to see and live in the parallel universe inside the second girls' head, Buffy no2.
So, Buffy no2 told her parents about the vampires, and went in the mental institution and stayed there, maybe gone about after a couple of weeks, but she certainly returned there, and Buffy no1 continued her life without being able to know that.
This theory also goes along with another good theory i read here, about Joyce's tumor being caused by the memories that the monks put inside people's head to create Dawn. In the parallel universe Joyce is alive and there is no Dawn, so no memories-no tumor.

I think the whole idea of this episode is to confuse us into not knowing what's real. Also to try and introduce the idea of maybe your own life is actually really a dream and your dreams are the reality etc. I love that sort of thing, so this episode is one of my favourites! I personally think it was just the demons effect on her that made her believe that she was insane and that none of the Buffy series had ever happened.
I also get bothered by the idea of when we get the aerial view of sunnydale we see none of the things from the other seasons, like the dock and the beach and the airport.
