Hi Well, my friend, literally tonight just finished watching season six for the first time. She said she loved it and everything we expect from someone watching the amazing four part arc for the first time. Now, here comes my question. I know Fray was written during Season 7 was shown and everyone got all excited when the scythe came on screen because it was from the comic. She said she'd be interested to read the comic and I think I'd want to see her reaction to the scythe when she sees the finale. So, what do you all think? When should I give her the TPB to read? BEFORE season seven, middle, or right before the finale? Thanks all

Hmm, I say let your friend read it now. Since she is in between seasons, now is probably the best time. I don't know if breaking up the last season so she can read the comic would be the best course. Plus if she reads the comic early, she may forget about the scythe enough to be even more surprised when Buffy finds it.

Yeah, I say let her read FRAY first. It'll make the end scene of Touched so epic when Buffy finds the Scythe. I wish it had happened to me that way.
As long as she reads it before Dirty Girls, I'd say it doesn't matter when exactly. But definitely before Caleb comes on the scene and starts talking about having something that belongs to Buffy.

I'll offer the flipside option. You let her watch S7 to its entirety, and then let her read Fray. Because reading Fray before watching S7 is like giving the end away. Right away, it's like saying, yeah, big emotional Slayer group hug equals bupkus in the end. Plus... imagine how epic it would be when she reads Fray in all its dismal post-apocalypticness, and then Urkonn unveils the Scythe. It would be the connecting piece to S7, which could very well prompt an immediate "Where are the damn funny books... must learn what happens in between!" And hey, don't forget that she has to read "Tales" before S8.

And hey, don't forget that she has to read "Tales" before S8. I don't think reading Fray before watching season seven would technically give the ending away. I mean, there's still only one slayer in that future and she'd have NO IDEA that Buffy, in the end, makes every girl a Slayer. So wouldn't it be more shocking when she thinks, "Hey, Buffy can't do that...oh, wait! She did?! So then how does everything end up like Fray with all those years in between?" thus getting her to read Season 8. She's undecided on reading season eight...so let's take it like she doesn't have her heart set on it. I think I'm leaning towards letting her read it now before starting the season. As long as there isn't any spoilers to season seven. None come to my mind. The only thing that could possibly be a spoiler is when they mention the epic battle with the unkown slayer and she may immediately think its Buffy. But technically they never say it is. So, at the end of season seven she may be looking for Buffy to loose and banish all magics...and that won't happen. It's pretty much be the opposite and THAT much more shocking. Hmmm, I'm liking the whole "read the comic" first.

What i meant was that the ending of S7 is almost immediately nullified by the knowledge that in Fray's time, there's only one Slayer. Again. Meaning that Buffy's big plan somehow failed to last. Thus, it reduces the impact of what Buffy actually does. I didn't mean that reading Fray beforehand will give away the ending of S7, but rather will give away the ending (or at least the furthest point in the future that we know of) of the Buffyverse. On the other hand, reading Fray after will immediately trigger a "Wait, what happened?" response. That's the way I see it. It's your friend... do as you wish.

I'm thinking have her read Fray beforehand, but don't tell her why. Just tell her what she reads will tie in to the show in a big, big way.
Reading Fray first might actually make the final battle in Chosen have more epic emotional impact, if she actually remembers what Urkonn tells Fray by then. Because she might be saying "OMG! But Urkonn said..." and "What happens next?!" and plow straight for the S8 comics, once you tell her that it has a Fray arc. Tell her all these things are connected. I'd definitely give her Fray to read now.
I wish I'd known about Fray, myself. I didn't. I had just barely caught like the last episode of S6 on TV, and it hooked me on the show, so that summer, I watched the entirety of the show so I'd be all caught up for S7's debut. But I had no clue that there was a comic that would tie it all in for me and make the ending more epic and whoa!-worthy. I mean, it was dramatic enough, but the whole scythe thing didn't really make much sense as I had no idea about its history. To me, it was a shiny red axe but I had no clue about the power it held or why Buffy would need it.

Wait... The Scythe was in Fray before Buffy? Whoah. I thought it was the other way around. I would totally flip if I was watching that ep for the first time and saw it. I guess this is one of the disadvantages of becoming a fan after the series ended

I only came on board as a fan for season 7, and it was after Chosen that I found out about Fray.

I remember, from someone, that they said everyone flipped when they saw the scythe on screen after it had been in Fray first.

It's almost Scythe time. You should totally have a hidden camera somewhere.
