The story so far...
~~~
Willow sighed as she looked up at Sunnydale High. It wasn't like she didn't want to be back. she loved it here. Well, she loved the school part of it. It was just the people. Sure, she had her friends Xander and Jesse, but most of the kids here...well, most of them ignored her. Only a few were outright mean, like Cordelia. Willow spotted Cordelia a little ways away, chatting with some girlfriends. Willow made a wide circle around them, and was walking towards the front steps when she spotted Xander on his skateboard, a little out of control.
Jesse was leaning against a column nearby, watching Cordelia. If only she was a little nicer, she might date him. But no, she had to be a world class bitch twenty-four/seven. But she was so beautiful. Jesse'd been watching her for almost a full year, and he knew that soon, soon he would be able to date her. He'd figure it out...somehow.
***
Joyce had just dropped her beautiful Buffy off for her first day at a new school. She wrestled with a mixture of feelings and felt a little queasy. On the one hand she was in a new town, and excited to have a fresh start - even though this change was terrifying for her. On the other hand, she had a bad feeling that Sunnydale might turn out to be just like LA for Buffy...or worse.
She loved her daughter, more than anything - or else she never would've moved their wholes lives to give Buffy another chance. However, in the last few years Buffy seemed to seek out trouble and Joyce felt like there wasn't really anything she could do that would protect her in the end. She pushed the fears to the corners of her mind and breathed deep, Well, I'll just have to settle for being the best mom I can be she thought adamantly.
As Joyce pulled up in the drive of their new home, she sighed and crossed her fingers in hope that today would be a good day, for both of them.
***
Standing in front of his closet, Xander looks at a rack full of breezy button-down shirts, some hawaiian, some plaid, others even more goofy. He thinks softly to himself that this year will be different. He's not going to be that goofy Xander that people make fun of anymore. Now if he could just find the right shirt. Suddenly the thought of 'cool kids' popped into his head, Cordelia and her gang.
"Do I really wanna be like them?"
Deciding that he shouldn't work to impress the likes of a shrew, he picks a random shirt, and heads out the door with his new skateboard.
***
Deep below the unassuming town of Sunnydale, something else was taking place. Just like the students were getting ready for school, the vampires below were getting ready, but for a completely different thing. A ripple in the water and then movement. the vampires watched, waiting with baited breath as a figure rose up before them, his black leather outfit gleaming in the light of the flames, as he surveyed the cavern, rising up completely from the water, then rolling his shoulders, as if to get the kinks out of the muscles "Well, that's one way to spend half a century," the Master growled, "Trapped inside a goddamn cathedral. So, who's gonna bring me dinner?"
***
Jenny Calendar enters her classroom.
Sitting down at her desk she unloads her bag. Out comes her diary, pencil, lip gloss and finally a book.
She switches on her computer and says quietly "The begining of another long day"
***
Buffy walked up the steps to her new high school, a little nervous, a little excited. at least this was a new start, no vampires, no demons, no evil. Of course, she missed her friends, especially Pike, but this was her new life, and she was going to make it work.
"Where is Xander?" Willow muttered. She hated waiting for him. Whenever she was alone she felt like a major friendless loser. Of course, Cordelia made her feel like that all the time, but Queen C was inside already, so Willow didn't have to deal with her. She'd promised Xander to meet him out front, though, so she stayed where she was.
Jesse followed Cordelia down the hall. He was simply admiring her from every angle. He'd gotten his hair cut yesterday, and was wearing a new sweater. He was waiting for a moment when she wasn't surrounded by friends, but that never seemed to happen. "Damn." he muttered as Harmony left her side, but Cordy was immediately hailed by Aura and Aphrodesia.
***
Rupert Giles pulled into the staff parking lot of Sunnydale High and climbed out of his ancient Citroen. He took a long look at the grounds and a few students milling about in the quad outside before walking towards the Principal's office. He had talked to Principal Flutie just once before when being offered the job of librarian at Sunnydale High, a job that the Watcher's Council had helped him procure. The cover should work perfectly, allowing Giles to take care of his prime duty as the new Watcher to the Slayer. Giles had worked hard to be named active Watcher, a lot harder than some of his over-privileged colleagues, and he intended to be the best guardian he could to his young charge. The girl, Buffy Summers (really, these Americans), should be arriving at Sunnydale High today as well, and Giles was nervous and excited in equal measure at the prospect of meeting her. This should be quite the day...
***
Buffy wrung her hands together as she listened to Principal Flutie. He rambled for a bit about her getting a clean slate, and then tore up her permanent record, which surprised her. Now the record was taped together, and Bob was wearing a frown. After she was dismissed, Buffy rushed from the office, eager to get away from him, and eager to not be late for any classes and she bumped right into some guy. her bag fell, and all her stuff spilled out over the floor.
***
"Mm, now that was tasty" The Master dropped the body aside with a slight look of disgust and he reminded himself why he had tried to open the Hellmouth over fifty years ago. His moment would come again and this time, he would be successful. Hell would rise and he would rule "Alright, so what's on the agenda?" the Master asked in a bored voice, head in hand, "We have work to do, don't we?" "Have you heard?" a vampire asked, "A Slayer's in town" This piped up the Master's interest "A Slayer? Well now, this should be interesting"
***
Amy walks through the crowded corridor. She sees a new girl drop the items from her bag. She goes to helper but by the time she is half way there Xander is talking to her. Amy decideds to turn the other way and head for lunch. She thought to herself "this is going to be another horrific year an Sunnydale High
***
Xander in a rush to get to school early so that he could ask Willow for math help... he barely pulled a D last semester... he rode his skateboard down the very crowded sidewalk, generously attempting not to kill anyone during the process. Just as he was about to get off the skate board and run up the stairs he sees a beautiful face he's never seen before.
In a matter of seconds he thought: Huh, that's odd. I know everyone here at Sunnydale High. She must be new. God, she's pretty. I wonder what's her story.
>crash<
Xander woke to find himself underneath the stair banister he'd just smashed into. Ow, that hurt he thought. Just as he was about to get himself to his feet, Willow entered his vision. Oh thank god, I'm not too late.
Willow, I'm so glad I bumped into you. Well, not literally. Anyway- could you help me with my math homework?
Willow said she'd help him. He thought: She's so good to me. I should do something to repay her. More than a shiny nickle. Oh! There's Jesse! Maybe he has some insider knowledge about the new girl.
Coming away with no new knowledge about the new girl from Jesse, he made his way to the library to get "Theories of Trigonometry" recommended by Willow, and then headed for his first class.
He hears a clattering behind him, turns, and sees the new girl dropping her bag all over the floor.
Damsel in distress. Must help.
"Can I have you?"
Tripping over his tongue, he made small talk to the beautiful new girl. Her name is Buffy. How odd. As she walked away, he berated himself for sounding so ridiculous. He noticed a wooden stake on the floor, that must belong to Buffy. Too late to actually give it to her, he decided to confront her on the absolute weirdness that is the new girl who carries a stake to school.
***
As Buffy walked away from the guy named Xander, she felt a little odd. He seemed nice enough, but a little creepy. she could have sworn he'd asked 'can i have you' before stooping to help her.
When the bell finally rang for lunch, Willow went out to the bench where she, Jesse and Xander usually sat. She was cursing Cordelia's name, and how she'd made a fool out of her in the hall. She was used to it, but it still bothered her sometimes.
***
Joyce was sitting at the dining table with a cup of hot coffee and a newspaper. Armed with a red marker she excitedly circled commercial buildings for sale that took her fancy. She was trying to find a space for her new gallery. She had always had a passion for art and wanted to have a gallery of her own. One of the great things about moving to sunnydale was that she could give it a go. As she read her thoughts subconsciously turned to Buffy. 'I wonder how things are going for her, first day, new school. Hopefully a good crowd to step into...'. Joyce looked forward to Buffy getting home, she'd love their new start to include some mother-daughter bonding and perhaps a little more honesty from Buffy's half. When Buffy got home, she would sit down and have a relaxed conversation with her. Joyce looked at the clock and her heart smiled with excitement and joy for the things to come. Ooooh!. Joyce's eyes lit up as she read through the description of an empty loft-type space in the good part of town. Before she'd even circled it she had the phone in hand and was dialling the number.
***
Jesse fiddled with his locker a few minutes after the lunch bell rang. last semester's combination was easy. 21-3-14. But now he had a new locker, and kept entering the wrong combination. After A few minutes he got it, wrenched open his locker and pulled out his scrunched paper lunch bag. He went outside into the courtyard to find Willow chatting with the new girl he jumped over the low wall behind them. "Hey."
Buffy jumped. "Hey." She said back. She didn't know this kid, and to be honest, he looked like a bit of a loser, but he seemed nice enough. "I'm Buffy."
"Jesse." Jesse said.
***
Giles sat behind his desk, cleaning his glasses and thinking back with unease to his first meeting with the Slayer. Had he come on a little strong? He had been informed of her previous activities in Los Angeles but the Watcher's Council had said nothing of a dismissive attitude toward her calling. She is the Slayer - the only girl in all the world capable of the task set before her. Her reaction to the book of vampire lore had been to bolt from the library in fear. This would take some work, but he must talk to her again, soon.
***
The mystical activity in Sunnydale seemed much greater than the Council had warned and an active (and willing) Slayer was clearly needed now.
***
As Buffy ate her lunch, she thougth about the weird British librarian. How had he known about her? Who had told him she was coming? it was all so confusing, and a little scary...
***
Johnathan painstakingly wiped his locker clean, someone had apparently thought that it would be hilarious to shove chocolate pudding through the vent in the door. He muttered bitterly to himself as he wiped a large sploge off his history folder. "Bullies" he moaned. He was often amazed at how much thought they put into bullying him. He would never fit in. He was pretty sure of that. As he slammed the locker shut he saw a group of people making their way to the cafeteria, Xander Harris, Willow Rosenberg, a tall guy whos name he couldn't remember and a blond girl. She had to be new, he had never seen her before. As he hitched his backpack onto his shoulder he watched them with a look of longing. Harris and Rosenberg weren't exactly social butterflys but even they managed not to be complete outcasts. Perhaps he should try talking to the new girl, she looked like she could happily be initiated into the cordettes but she was hanging with those guys so she must be different, like them. He could stroll in and strike up a conversation. He could be a member of their group. Couldn't he? "Damn it" he mumbled, if only he had a little more confidence. She was probably really boring anyway. They all were. "I bet I would be bored to death" he thought. He needed more intelectual friends he decided. He flopped into a chair at an empty table and began to unpack his lunch. He couldn't eat the schools food, the lunchlady gave him the creeps. Just then a blond boy wearing an oversized star wars t-shirt sat down and began to unpack his matching lunch box. Johnathan sighed, looking once more towards the group laughing and joking. "I wish they'd let me in" he thought. "Hey", said the blond boy "wanna play Kevin Bacon?" Johnathan rolled his eyes "What a nerd" he thought. "Okay" he said, this was going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
***
"I don’t want to interrupt your downward mobility. I just thought I’d let you know that you that you won’t be meeting Coach Foster, the woman with chest hair, because gym has been canceled due to the extreme dead guy in the locker!" Cordelia waved her hand to her side a little bit for emphasis, though she didn't really care about the dead guy. The being-stuffed-in-a-locker thing was creeping her out a bit though. She'd never admit it, but Cordelia had never been okay with all the strange dissaperences and frequent deaths that occured in sunnydale. Her reputation for only caring about herself was fragile and although she had all the 'somebodys' in sunnydale practically kissing her feet, she felt incredibly alone. She knew they were all just yes-men.... or women. Buffy was getting on her nerves a bit though, she was pretty enough to be seen with cordelia but not now that she had chosen to communicate with those nerds. Whatever!
***
"Dead?" Buffy said, leaping to her feet, turning white. not here, not here! i came to Sunny-dull to get away from that stuff!
Jesse eyes Cordelia and bobbed his eyebrows up and down a little. "So...uhh. Cordelia." Just her name felt good in his mouth. "You going to the Bronze tonight?"
"God, Jesse!" Willow hit his arm. "Someone is dead, and you're looking for a date tonight? Prioritize much?" She frowned at him. It was her classic scowly face, and even though she meant it, she knew that she just looked cute. Xander always told her that when she was angry with him. That she was too cute to look grumpy. But, as always, he meant 'cute' in a friend way. No prefix 'girl' for me there. Just friend.
***
"Oh, please." Cordelia moved her arm to put a barrier between her and Jesse. What a freak, she sniffed a little, uuhg - smelly freak. "Yea, dead! What, you think he just stuffed himself in there for a little snooze?" Cordelia looked at Buffy who appeared to have phased completely out of the conversation. Cordelia was about to turn and leave, still with her eyes on Buffy, when she stood quickly.
"Uh, I gotta book, I see you's later." Buffy slid past Cordelia, her boots were clanking loudly as she half ran-half walked around the corner and out of site.
Cordelia watched her leave, "Whats her deal??" She turned back around to see Willow, Jesse and Xander looking at her. . I need to leave now and begin thinking before I speak to just anyoneUgh! Cordelia walked away loudly stomping her feet into the ground.
ooc// Fredikins, you are now Dawned up! Night Lord, i think it's a little early, but not too far off. Secret Scoob: awesome job!
bic// Willow watched Buffy dash away, confused. Why was she so bent over this one death? People died here all the time, but she supposed it was because Buffy was new. She turned back to Jesse and Xander. Jesse was gazing dreamily after Cordelia, but Xander was still on earth, so she shot the conversation at him "Anyways, Xand, if you're looking for math help, you should check out the library and get some books. We can study in sixth period if you want."
Fifteen minutes later, Buffy stormed into the library. "Mister Geeves, or whatever!" She hollered, looking for the librarian. "You are NEVER going to believe this."
ooc// woop! thanks <3 bic// Cordelia spotted Harmony and some other girls a bit further up the hallway. "Hey!" She called as she walked hastly up to them. "Hey," Cordelia smiled at all of them. Harmony was serious, "Please tell me I didn't just see you talking to that Willow freeky Hainswith or whatever her name is and her two geek friends over there." Harmony wasn't joking... She really didn't know Willow's name. "Uhh, what? No! I was just being a great humanitarian and helping them with their fashion." Cordelia nodded. Harmony smiled and laughed immediately, "Oh! Right, ofcourse," She acted as if it was wrong to question Cordelia in the first place. Cordelia marched off and the cordettes followed quickley behind.
"Geez, don't you hate how everyone just does exactly what Cordelia says?" Willow asked out loud.
"What? What about Cordelia?" Jesse seemed to snap out of a sort of trance. Willow rolled her eyes and turned to Xander while gathering up her things.
"C'mon, Xand, i'll show you where the library is, i doubt you've ever been there before."
//This is a pivotal scene, so sorry for the length. I also couldn't take some lines out - they set the whole story, so i've tried to be as inventive as I can with this scene, but it'll probably feel somewhat familiar...//
Giles was surprised and more than a little relieved to see his new charge storm into the library shortly after lunch. He had been in the stacks acquainting himself with the rather inadequate History section of Sunnydale High's Library when the tiny blonde charged up to him. "What the hell is going on?!" "Miss Summers?" "You get bodies in lockers often here in Sunnydale? Oh, that's right, you're new here as well, right? Just happened to appear at the same time as me and the really pale guy that cancelled gym. Why are you here?" Hands on hips with a constant glare, Buffy cut quite the intimidating figure. Giles was beginning to see the Slayer within her now. "I might very well ask you the same question. Do you really think that it's a coincidence that you've been called here at this time. I believe that-" "I wasn't CALLED here by anybody. My Mom moved here, and this school would take me - that's it! I don't want any of this! Why did I even come here?" Buffy turned to leave, the frustration evident in her voice and movement. "Will he...rise?" Giles took a step closer. "What?" "The dead boy. Is he-will he come back?" "No. I don't think so. He's just dead. It's not very often that vamps wanna make new vamps. Mosty, they're just looking to chow. But whatever - nothing to do with me." Buffy turned more slowly, and walked towards the door. "But you are the Slayer!" Giles moved down the stairs towards her, intent on stopping her imminent departure. "Into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world, a Chosen One, one born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires..." "To stop the spread of their evil blah blah blah...I know the drill ok?" "Then why are you so resistant to your calling? You've slain vampires before..." "Well I'm retired." Buffy turned once more for the exit. This conversation was going into familiar and unwelcome territory. She hadn't had to deal with vampires since leaving Hemery and intended for things to stay that way. "I believe that you have been brought here for a reason. If you look into the history of this town, you will find a perplexing concentration of mystical occurrences, murders, disappearances. Something here draws mystical energy towards it and we may see more than just vampires before long." "Like what?" Giles picked a few occult volumes from the central table and reeled off some titles for her. "Werewolves, zombies, warlocks, demons of unspeakable power and evil. All of the things that most people refuse to see and believe for fear that they might be in the very next room. They are all real!" "Well why is this my problem? Why don't you kill them?" "But I'm a Watcher. I-I don't have a-any powers, skills-" "Oh come on, it's a cinch, really. Stake through the heart, little decapitation. I'm sure you'll have a blast." "The Slayer's job is to slay. The Watcher trains the Slayer, prepares her for-" "For what? For cutting myself off from everyone I know? For getting kicked out of school? For fighting for my life every day and not telling anyone about it for fear they might get hurt? Go ahead, prepare me."
Giles was stunned. The Watcher's council had never talked of the Slayer's experience of the war they fought. In all of his training, the Slayer was depicted as a compliant and willing part of the fight, ready to lay her life down if necessary. For the first time, Giles was seeing the impact of this remarkable power and responsibility on a real girl, and had no words for her. Buffy paused for a few seconds. She couldn't believe the nerve of this stuck-up Brit. It was a choice he made to get involved in the supernatural world. When it was clear he had nothing to reply to her outburst, she turned with disgust and strode out of the library.
Buffy's exit shook Giles out of his internal debate. This was going to be harder than he imagined, but however he did it, Buffy was needed in Sunnydale and it was his job to get her back into the fight. He followed her out into the corridor, intent on impressing upon her the urgency of the situation.
"Wait!" He caught up to her and held her arm. "All of my books point to a-a pivotal mystical upheaval in this town. The signs suggest it could be days - even less. I am convinced that you have been brought to this town now in time to stop it." "The only thing I was brought to this town to stop is me single-handedly ruining my life. Come on! This town isn't even big enough for two malls! How bad could evil get here?"
A few hours later, Giles had been sitting in his librarian's office with a few choice tomes, mulling over that very point. He had checked and re-checked every demon almanac he knew and they all said the same thing. Something big was coming soon, and he would need Buffy to fight it. Approaching her in the library had been a failure. She would need her Slayer instincts re-ignited before being able to take up her position again. He settled on the solution. He would venture into the field tonight and find her. But where would he find her? There must be places that young people (and perhaps vampires?) would gather in Sunnydale, and tonight Rupert Giles would join them to set a Slayer back on her feet.
Willow caught up with Buffy after school. "Hey." She said to the blonde. "You said you wanted help with school stuff? want to head to the library and stufdy now?" She could have sworn Buffy twitched when she said 'library'. "or...you know...somewhere else."
"Somewhere else is good." Buffy said distractedly. "Bu not right now. how 'bout later tonight?"
"I can't." Wilow said. "I'm going to the Bronze with Xander and Jesse. But...we could study there if you want."
"Sure." Buffy said. "I'll meet you there later." And she sped off. Willow watched her go, a bit confused. She hitched her backpack more securely onto her shoulders and started to walk home. She didn't bother waiting for Xander or jesse. Xander was probably still wandering, lost, in the library, and Jesse was probably stalking Cordelia. Willow really didn't like having just boys for friends sometimes. But this Buffy girl seemed nice enough. Willow wonderd if she was looking at her newest best friend as she wached Buffy march down the street.
Come on people! Let's get this re-write moving again! I believe that the next scene should be Secret Scoobie although she has posted (a while ago) that we should maybe post past this point and she can fill in later. That would make it Angel and Buffy in the alleyway, which is VampSlayer's territory.
ooc// sorry so busy with exams and stuff atm, but I will take 10 mins to write a scene here so we can get going!
bic// Joyce was smiling, she's just got off the phone with a very cheerful realtor and had organised to have a tour of the loft-space she thought might be good for her gallery. She absentmindly wandered in the kitchen and opened the fridge. Let's have something nutritious tonight she thought as she reached for some tomatos, cabbage, carrots & celery. She placed these things on the counter but before she'd even done anything with them she was distracted by the sound of footsteps on the second floor. Buffy's home? Joyce didn't even hear her come in. She was hoping to catch Buffy when she came through the door so they might sit down and have a conversation of their first days. She realised now she'd have to go to Buffy if she wanted this bonding thing to eventuate.
She climbed the stairs and entered Buffy's room where she found her rummaging through her wardrobe. Buffy told her she was going out. Joyce was a little disappointed she wouldn't get to spend the night with Buffy but didn't want to seem to overbearing so she thought the next best thing would be some motherly advice:
"Well, don't stay out too late Buffy, it's a school night." "I know Mom, don't worry I'll be good!" "I just don't want you falling in with a bad crowd like last time... you're a sweet girl Buffy and I really want this to work for us." "Mom, seriously, it's not going to be like last time! I promise, I'm over all that. This time I'm going to focus on my study not saving the world... Oh... I mean, you know what's it's like being a teenager - Feels like you've got the world on you're shoulders and all that..." "Oh, right, of course. Well, have fun darling. Maybe we could spend tomorrow night vegging on the couch?" "Maybe..um, nah, sure..um, okay Mom.."
Joyce left the room and gave herself a B+ for that attempt, she'd been open and caring without being too lenient. Maybe those parenting books were teaching her something afterall. I think I need to read a bit more coaching in the 'Saying No' department though she sighed. Well, for now things weren't going too badly, so she thought she'd just let things evolve and take it one step at a time.
A book and a bath Joyce smiled as she made her new plans for the night.
Willow slid through the mad dances in teh Bronze. Cordelia was close by, and so Willow veered sharply away, and found herself at the bar. She leaned in to the bartender and called over the pulsing music.
"Can i get a-" "ID!?" Shouted the bartender, head bobbing to the music. "No booze without ID!" "I wasn't going to order booze!" Willow hollered. The bartender looked at her like she was crazy, or maybe she was one of the few people who didn't even try to order alcohol. It had never really appealed to Willow, anyways.
"Heeeey, Cordelia. Lookin' fine." Jesse said, wadnerinhg up to her. He'd been off to teh side of the dance flor for nearly half an hour, working up the courage to ask her to dance.
ooc// it's okay, guys. my exams start this week so i'm gonna be off for a while, too.
"No. it's probably just really stressful for him 'cause it's so busy." As the song ended and the crowd clapped, Willow was able to lower her voice. Another song started, but she was thankful it was a slower, quiet one. "So are you here with anyone? Cordelia invited you to come, right?" She looked over at Cordelia, who was oon the dance floor with some majorly hot guy.
