Seriously, the article about "Michelle" Gellar being ready to do a movie smells strongly of an April Fool's joke that someone forwarded who didn't get the gag. Just go back thru the old topics here to a year ago, and you'll see that Wyndam pulled the exact same thing! Hehe, I thought about bumping that thread last week to see if I could try and fool some of the newer members. ;D

At this point, I really don't want there to be a movie, whether it ties in with S8 or not. For one thing, have you seen the actors lately? It's been awhile since I've seen Nick, but Sarah and Aly, while they still look great, don't exactly look like they just stepped off a college campus. Forget about mid-twenty-somethings--I think they'd have a hard time passing them off as anything but what they really are: people in their early 30s. Which means forget about a movie set between S7 and 8--you'd probably be looking at something set 6-10 years after "Chosen". That's what I'd hope for. A movie wouldn't be as interesting if they were still in their early 20's. I think a movie where a significant amount of time has passed, when the characters are actually adults, would be just too good to be true. It'd be such a nice revisit into the characters lives. Please no Spike or Angel. That'd just be way too annoying. Even if they could fix the aging with makeup or special effects, just them being around Buffy wouldn't work with a movie. Really, the only characters that should be a necessity are Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles and Dawn. Anyone else would be bonus.

I've read all 24 issues of Buffy season, and I'd gladly go outside right now and burn them if it ensured a movie was made.

I guess the real question is who loves comics as much as they love tv/movies. For some people, the change of media, or the fact that we don't have actors and stuff anymore, don't allow the comics to be as "real" and close-to-the-chest as the tv show was... I'm a comic freak, so, my opinion is pretty obvious... :DLOL

Okay, a movie that will focus on the new big bad and give way little screen time for character development and if there's gonna be a tiny character development it's gonna be given to a few characters (I'm sure they're gonna be Buffy and Willow, other characters? They're gonna be standing silently in the corner just like in S7) and I'll endure two hours of Buffy and Willow dealing with whatever issues they have at the moment - a few jokes from the comic relief Xander and Dawn, as well as some explanations about what's happening from Giles, and in the end, they're gonna live happily ever after.
Um. Not satisfied. I want a season with complex plot and character development, so I'm choosing S8.

I'd be fine with the decanonization of season 8, actually. I can understand why some people would want the comics to remain canon, but, even though I enjoy the comics well enough for what they are, I think they seem very out of character and I don't really think of them as a canonical part of the Buffyverse as is.
Still, I highly doubt there'll ever be a Buffy movie, so I'm not willing to make an issue out of it.

That's exactly what I'd like to know. "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" contradict some of the events of the original comic series, so do the movies de-canonize the comics? Does "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" de-canonize "Terminator 3"? In the extremely-unlikely event that a "Buffy" movie ever got made, and it contradicted the comics, they oughta be viewed (given Joss's major involvement with both) as separate-but-equal branching timelines, much like the "Terminator" franchise, post-T2. Hmm, this is interesting because I quite enjoy the split-timeline aspect of the Terminator series. Also, Halloween follows two different timelines after H20 retconned the previous three movies out of continuity. A lot of fans are still pissed off about that, but I enjoy both continuties for different reasons and am happy for them to co-exist separately (although my heart lies with the H20-verse). The thing is, I don't know if I want the Buffyverse to become as fractured and confusing as those series. If Season Eight was retconned, it would also call into question the canonicity of Tales and Fray, maybe even After the Fall. Plus you'd have all the newbies who didn't understand the different continuities. If it happens, I could live with it but it wouldn't be an ideal scenario for me. And the comics continuity would still be the "real" Buffyverse to me. Agreed. I have the feeling that if a movie were made, everyone would get excited for months, then there'd be tears when it came out and their favourite characters didn't get enough screentime. Sorry to be cynical, but a movie would inevitably disappoint. Also, the majority of casual fans who haven't watched the show in years would probably be pissed off if Spike wasn't in it.

I vote for a movie instead of season 9 Set the movie after season 8 and make very little reference to it. That way we get both

In the extremely-unlikely event that a "Buffy" movie ever got made, and it contradicted the comics, they oughta be viewed (given Joss's major involvement with both) as separate-but-equal branching timelines, much like the "Terminator" franchise, post-T2. Excellent idea. I think the idea of a move that decanonizes the comic series I LOVE would be okay with me, in that I can, and would be okay with seeing it as seperate paths of the Buffyverse story. I'd tell myself (if I had to, as a movie blatantly contradicted the comics) that alternate universes are possible [re: The Wish!]and would watch the movie as a finale to th s1-7 TV show. I would then go back to my comic after this and see is as the "This is what happened in the Buffy goes to scotland universe" and be totally okay with that! I would love a movie, but also see the issues of time, plot constraints and actor availability - so it in most likelihood would not happen, but if it was to happen - and at the expense of canon-comics - I would in no way stand against it! They COULD co-exist, and while everyone else is very EITHER OR, I'm taking all the good Buffy I can get and I DO love the comics so I would never eschew them. Comics will go forever (or for a while longer hopefully) and in doing so satisfy my buffylove long term. But a movie would be the big bang I've been waiting for, and there is no part of me tha doesn't want that (No matter how little probability there is). BUt that's just me.

I would love to see Joss make a movie out of "The Long Way Home". I could picture the government claiming Buffy Summers was a terrorist and the whole "Twilight" villain. But any Buffy movie would make my day. I am actually quite hooked to season 8 lately only because OZ is coming back and Giles is getting back with the gang. But again, "The Long Way Home" movie would be epic. XD

This "either or" mentality seems stupid to me. There's no reason a movie couldn't be in continuity with Season 8, either picking up before, during, or after the comics. Joss managed to catch us up really quickly with Serenity, filling in the gaps between the series and the movie, and summarizing the characters pretty quickly for those who had never seen the show. A Buffy movie could easily do the same.

No one is denying the possibility that a movie could be in continuity with the comics. This thread was created because some fans were concerned when Joss said that he would throw S8 out if he had to, in order to make a movie. And so, the either/or mentality is quite relevant here, as it's a place where fans are weighing in on whether they would support ditching the comics in place of a movie.

IMO if they ever do a movie the beginning should be a voiceover from Anthony saying "Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer" then show almost all the stuff that happened in the comics cause I think that would be awesome.

I wouldn't really mind the comic being "de-canonized". I am enjoying the comics but a live action continuation would just be IMMENSE! I don't think a continuation of s8 into a film would work either. Anybody who hadn't read the comics would be so confused, and the Buffyverse in comic form does seem different to the TV Buffyverse (at least in my opinion). I don't mind really, Buffy in most forms pleases me

i think the comics are ok, but personally i think i would actually be pretty happy if they threw out the comics to do a movie. movie > comics (as long as the movie is better than the comics)

I was completely at a loss and was flopping back and forth from the "yes, anything to make a movie" and the "it'd have to take place after season 8." While I truly truly truly believe the comics are the official continuation, I went with "It'd have to take place after season 8." Now, it doesn't necessarily have to TAKE PLACE AFTER. It just has to connect somehow.

I'm suprised that there is only 8 people who prefer the comics. While I'm a 'can co-exist' kind of person, I thought it'd be about half and half for MOVIE or COMICS.
Awesome poll!
