Decent issue. Not my favorite, but still high ranking. Kinda feels like a set-up issue (like 17 of Season 8). My only question though really: Illyria reverting to its true form....how? Just, will power? Has she always been able to do this? Just because she's in hell? And if it's just because of hell, why hasn't she done it before now anyway? Suddenly have a sinking feeling for Connor but I can't imagine. Eh...no. As far as I am aware of (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) Illyria has and is very un stable in Hell. Everyone has their little changes. For Example Nina and the whole sun/moon thing and Wes as a ghost-ish character now. Anyway since Illyria was in the form of Fred when Gunn shot her she was easier wounded in that form. Fred's shell was dying and Illyria was bursting out of it due to her injury. She broke free and is now setting about ending time and reality as we know it. Issue 14 was very good and as someone has already said earlier it did feel like a set up issue for the last few. It still had a few good moments though. Mainly from Connor and Spike. The scene between them both arguing whether or not to sire Angel was great and what Spike said about Angelus. One thing I need cleared up though, what exactly did Gunn build in that demon place. He was putting Fred down on it and then The demons broke in and put Angel in it. He then was healed and Illyria had been set free to destroy everything. Any info is appreciated. Thanks Whedon Fan

Yes, you're right. And now I have to type this to stretch it out so it's long enough to post. Bumblebees. Cool. I too am a fan of short posts. I hope you appreciated my extensive review and critique of the issue I gave in that above post

This was a great issue. It's weird because, although I want to read more Angel, I can't wait till it ends, so I can find out what happens!
Anyway, I will once again state that I love Gunn as a villian. He is so evil, but his vulnerabilities, jealousy of Angel, love for Fred and his love for life are really compelling. I love the line: "I had a breath. I want more," is so emotional. Also, when he's trying to protect Illyria from the dragon's in the air he says: "It's fine. It's gong to be okay," is so very human a reaction, that it again pulls at my heart strings.
I have to say I'm glad that Fred isn't coming back. Not because I didn't like the character, but because it keeps the continuity of her story in tact. we were told that her soul was destroyed in Season 5 and it would be too convenient to find a way to bring her back. Even if I don't like it, the story's continuity is more important to me than anything else.
I know some people don't like Spike's reactions in this, but I have to say I thought he was great.
I can't believe I like Conner. I hated him in the show, I mean hate, but he's really grown on me in the comic and I love his "protective son" schtick. Now only if the Buffy comics could change my mind about Dawn - that would be a miracle.
Angel's internal monologue really captures the character. I love the line about Conner: "He doesn't know how to save me. Doesn't know if he should save me." Very in character for Angel to think that.
I also love how Angel's first concern after he's healed is Conner.
Shout out to the Cleveland hellmouth!
The conduits say, "A piece out of place and Angel won't be restored to his original state." Then Angel says later, "As I return to my true form...." Are they talking about human or vampire? I have a feeling Angel might not be human even though he tells Wesley he is. Those two pieces of dialogue seem like foreshadowing to me.
I'm worried about Conner's fate. Some more people need to die in this comic and his death would be so shocking, more so than if they killed Spike, I think.
Love the time slip of Angel in the past as a kid. Also, the drawing of Angel in the last panel is so Boreanaz-like. Well done.

totally agree michellebuffyfest i'm not sure angel's being truthful about his humanity. if it weren't for his internal monlogue i'd say he'd reverted to angelus and was acting. also agree wiht your statement about connor. maybe something happened to him when the building collapsed and that's what pushes angel over to the one-who-will-bring-the-fall-of-all-that-is-good-side. completely loved illyria's transformation, can't wait for 15-17 now, how could it not be huge? x

When I read this issue I was thinking "This is a lot like 'Power Play'! It is moving all the big players into the war zone." So issues 15-17 are going to be like "Not Fade Away". Moving Sad Death Revelations galore! Can't wait!

Really stellar issue! I figured it would be hard to follow the awesomeness that was issues 12 and 13, but this issue did a great job of setting up final events. Lots of great stuff was revealed, which just shows how well Brian's had this planned out from the start. I must say that I was very pleased with how Angel's "resurrection" was handled. I think everyone assumed that Angel was either going to be healed by Hotel de Chuck, or that he would somehow become revamped. I loved what actually happened, and it seems like every issue does a great job of piling on the surprised.
Loved, loved, loved the Wesley/Illyria scene. So well written, I wish it was longer! Fred's really gone and Illyria just wants to BE Fred, for Wesley. So moving. Of course life isn't that simple and she decided she wants to end existence. It's so exciting to have Illyria out in her true form, and I can't wait to see how this unfolds.
Also loved the Betta George lines! He never ceases to get a chuckle out of me. I hope we see more of him in the last few issues.
Only 3 left!

Very good issue! Don't really have much to say because I feel exactly the same as everyone else. I just loved that so many questions were answered. My favorite part was also the quick scene between Wesley and Illyria. So heartbreaking and the writing was perfect, so was Angel contemplating about killing Gunn. Illyria's true form was very cool, and the last page was PERFECT, probably my favorite of any issue yet.
OH! And I LOVED that Groo named his flying horse Cordelia, that is just too funny.

Is Illyria going to timeshift back to the time before Not Fade Away?

Is Illyria going to timeshift back to the time before Not Fade Away? It looks like that was Gunn's plan for her, but now that Illyria is back in her true form, she wants to just end existence altogether (which also works for Gunn). Who knows what will happen now.

I do!
Thank you guys, for your support and your discussions about the series. It's a real joy to read your reactions, good or bad. But I definitely prefer "good", it means I'm doing my job correctly.

I have the feeling we don't see Illyria back in Fred-form.
Angel AtF #3, when she's timeslipping the first time, we see a shot of Angel staked at the wall with knives, left from the Smile Time-shift. A futuristic Angel says, I quote, didn't think I see that face again.
Is this proof we don't see her back?

I have the feeling we don't see Illyria back in Fred-form. That’s what I think too, which sucks because now there's nothing left to remind us of Fred. It will be as if she never existed. I haven't read the issue yet but I'm sure Illyria's bursting through her "shell" will destroy Winifred's body in the process.

I thought it was a good issue, it wasn't amazing but it was good. I thought it was kinda funny when the slayers were slightly confused on who they could kill and who they couldn't. I really liked the artwork when Illyria is "bursting" out of her shell.
Great issue Brian.

Loved the issue! I'd say 9/10.
Now, I have a question, Brian. I really hope you can answer it.
I know that Joss is stopping (or so I've heard) after issue 17 and then there will be a epilogue type story taking place after...with you and another writer without Joss (therefore TECHNICALLY not considered canon, but that doesn't bother me).
So, will readers be able to stop at 17? Does it serve as an ending to the show? Or do you think they should continue to read? I like epic endings...so if the ending of 17 is good...I'll probably stop there.

AFTER THE FALL wraps in issue 17. That said, 17 is definitely more quiet than issue 16. Kind of like how the arc of the season of BUFFY and ANGEL would end with one episode to go, and then the last episode was more about catching your breath, dealing with character stuff, and also setting up stuff that could pay off down the line.
As for whether you can jump off at issue 17, I would say you shouldn't because Kelley Armstrong is going to rock it, and I've heard about what could happen even after her arc and it's nuts and great. But I think it would be a huge cheat to the readers to not end ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL when we said we were going to end ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL, so the story absolutely has a resolution in issue 17. AFTERMATH is what happens next. And it's grand.

1. I'm not in charge of the covers, I'm just the writer guy. 2. I have no idea, I'm just the ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL guy. 3. He will open a taco stand in Santa Monica.
