SPOILERS FOR #18! So it looks like the guy Angel is fighting on Runge's cover is one of these "post-apocalyptic" crazies that was introduced in #18. I really can't wait to see what exactly happened to these individuals, and if it is possible to fix them. What happened to them is almost like some sort of magical disease. EDIT: 3,000 posts, yay me.

I firmly believe that its canon as well. Maybe if Aftermath was considered a OneShot and didnt continue with the official numbering, then no. But other people were in charge of Buffy and Angel when they were on TV, and Joss didnt have involvement in certain episodes so why dont people complain about that?

But other people were in charge of Buffy and Angel when they were on TV, and Joss didnt have involvement in certain episodes so why dont people complain about that? Because in the show, even with episodes written and directed by other people, Joss was still executive producer. His name was in the credits, and he was involved to an extent. The same way that certain issues of Season Eight are not written by Joss, but nobody questions their canonicity; Joss is the executive producer and he's guiding the series as a whole. Aftermath dropped Joss' name from the credits, he's no longer involved at all. IDW are just continuning the numbering because they know sales will drop if they don't, but as far as I'm (and others are) concerned, it's a different series from the canonical After the Fall.

Ok, I started reading the preview and had to stop. What the hell is going on with Angel? He looks like a comic superhero on STEROIDS. I am so not loving this direction in the art here.
*goes back to reading*
These pages don't feel like ANGEL to me. They feel like a cliched comic superhero's interpretation of ANGEL. Me no likey.

Didn't read the dialogue, but looked at the art... and what the hell?! I actually enjoyed the art in #18, Kate didn't look good but I thought everything else was fine. This is very over-the-top.

And hello gratuitous nudity, how ya doing? You feeling at home here at ANGEL...I really wish you weren't.
The art is trying too damned hard. Whedonverse stories are supposed to play around with the cliches, not embrace them like this. This story is lacking self-awareness and connection to the identity of ANGEL.
I'm massively disappointed.

Wow, looks like the 2000-2001 Angel comics... might just have to think of it like "The Origin" were the story is canon but the art...not so much.

Well... visually, my favorite character here is Dez. That's probably because a) she's an original character with no pre-existing frame of reference, and b) she's naked. She reminds me of Nightcrawler from the X-Men. Only... you know, female, and naked. Someone should tell Kate that the kevlar vest and the bare belly are sending mixed signals as to exactly how much she does not want bits of weaponry to enter her torso. Cover up, girl.

Wow, looks like the 2000-2001 Angel comics... might just have to think of it like "The Origin" were the story is canon but the art...not so much. I'm afraid I'm not able to compartmentalize like that. My problem here is that this just looks really bad. And the story was okay, but it was just okay. And a comic doesn't get to squeak by just based on okay dialogue. A comics identity is grounded in the visual art. I feel like that identity is being bitchslapped into something unworthy of ANGEL - I'm not trying to be a hater here, I'm just extremely disappointed by this. Looking at this is making me grateful for all the things that After the Fall got right. Aftermath is making After the Fall look all shiny and new to me now. I have criticisms of AtF, but there were still so many things done just right. As for the story part being canon in Aftermath like it was in Origin, well that's the thing. Just being an extension of a canon work doesn't make it canon. All the comics that are considered canon have one thing in common - Whedon. Even comics just done by the TV writers during Buffy's previous DH era aren't considered canon. My resolve has slowly been firming towards not considering Aftermath canon. Seeing this, it just makes me start to think that I'm really okay with not reading it as canon. I've never had such a strongly negative reaction like this to the comics. I'm disgusted. It feels like the smart edge of BUFFY and ANGEL is being trampled on by this lack of understanding of it's tone and spirit.

I can't get over how nasty Kate's outfit choice is. She is, or was, a mature woman. I guess Hell-A also made her one of those annoying older women that try their best to fit in with the younger crowd but they're just embarrassing themselves.

Ugh. ARGH! I'm so mad about this turn. I'd had hopes that Aftermath would get better as it progressed and I feel like I just got slapped.

Only five pages though. I'll bet it improves after these quite crappy ones, and maybe we'll get some Gwen! Oh jeez, hopefully she doesn't have 40DDD sized breasts or something.

Only five pages though. I'll bet it improves after these quite crappy ones, and maybe we'll get some Gwen! Optimism. I remember optimism. Oh jeez, hopefully she doesn't have 40DDD sized breasts or something. Sigh. This is more in line with my realistic expectations. I just can't get over the massive muscle bomb dropped on Angel. Power in the Buffyverse isn't contained in huge ass muscles, but is a deceptive strength. How else could a 5'3'' tiny blonde take down a guy twice or three times her size? Angel's strength isn't exemplified by rippling muscles. Oh and also, sooooooooooooo not sexy. Yuck! He looks like a gross body builder on drugs. The scene of Angel shaving in AtF #5 was yummy - it felt slightly weird to be finding a comic drawing of Angel sexy, but it totally was. This is just gross. So I'm glad that some guys are enjoying naked Dez, but for me her depiction also lacks something sexy. Sigh.

Lol they are just muscles, "disgusted" seems rather harsh. But we've already had an entire month to complain about how the characters look. This is how Ross is drawing Aftermath. People can either accept that or moooooooove on, the art isn't going to change much (although Kate looks a lot better). Ross knows how to draw his action scenes though, so I quite liked this preview. And Gwen had massive boobs in her First Night story, but I dont remember people lampooning the series because of it. As for nekkid Dez, what's the issue? It has been established in the Buffyverse that Were Creatures are unable to morph into their creature form and out of them with their clothes intact, so if Dez had changed back into her human self with clothes on, I would have certainly been scratching my head. Naked assassins aren't new to the Buffyverse either, as Jasmine/Cordy killed Manny in Season 4 stark naked. Kelley shouldn't change established rules just so Dez doesn't have to fight naked. Dez obviously doesn't mind. I like that Kelley is establishing that the Post-Apocalyptic crazies are at least somewhat intelligent as they are able to set traps. That's cool, since mindless villains can get old fast (except for Zombies, of course ). Kate and Connor's dialogue was fun too, and some of Kate's comments reminded me of back on the show when she would usually say something sarcastic when something weird happened. And this is coming out next Wednesday as well, only 3 weeks after #18. Yay.

I loved the previews. I'm very optimistic when it comes to Aftermath, I think the whole thing will turn out great. I do believe that it is canon, but even if it isn't, that doesn't change how I feel about it.
