My rating:
1. True Believer 2. Gray Hour 3. The Target 4. Ghost & Stage Fright
"Stage Fright" would have ranked higher if it weren't for some really clunky areas.

This episode was absolutely incredible! I didn't think that this one was going to top The Target (even with Tim Minear's name attached to it), but boy, was I wrong. This is easily my favorite yet. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I was laughing so much in the Topher/Dr. Saunders scenes (take that, you naysayers who kept complaining that it didn't have Joss-esque humor!). I'm totally saying "man-reaction" from now on.
Overall, here's how I'd rank the episodes:
1. True Believer 2. The Target 3. Gray Hour 4. Ghost 5. Stage Fright

I really liked the episode more than I thought I would. I was more intrigued with the inner-Dollhouse scene than Echo's actual engagement though. I loved the scenes with Topher and Claire. I see a relationship in the making. Victor and Sierra stuff was funny as well.

hey. I didn't have time to read through this thread because I am on my way out the door (damn friday time slot!!!). But I wanted to mention something that I thought was awesome in this episode. When clair and topher are talking about victor (forgot his other name), clair says that he has had 8 engagements with Mrs. Lonely Hearts. I am not sure if anyone else knows this but... Mrs. Lonely Hearts is the name of a character in Hitchcock's Rear WIndow. Rear Window is known in the film world as "The Masters Dollhouse" because hitchcock wanted rear window to feel like we were looking in on a dollhouse, seeing something we were not suposed to see. All of the characters, aside from the main characters (names Jeff and Liza) have names like Mrs. Lonely HEarts...Mrs. Torso is another one. Just thought it was an awesome little nod. Be back with more comments on the episode (and a hangover, most likely) i said i would come back in the morning and post my thoughts and i wan't lying i loved the episode which didn't supries me becuase i have loved them all do far but i loved this one more than i thought i was going to. i really loved the procedural aspect! it had a bit of a csi feel to it that i really enjoyed. i thought there were a lot of really awesome unexpected twists. when echo was in the fire and whats-his-face came in and hit her with the gun, i thought it was going to be boyde coming in to save her. then when boyde came in to save her, i thought it was going to be whats-his-face coming to finish her off and then it was boyde! ahh! i loved it. i was sitting on the edge of my seet! i also loved all of the voice over in this episode. it was very affective. the scene when echo is reading from the bible, as the atf was moving in.... awesome scene! and then when echo and boyde emerged from the flames like the bible had predicted! wow. this ep had joss all over it. it gives me high hopes for ep six and beyond!!!!!!

I wonder why, when an Active malfunctions or goes off mission, the only apparent responses are to "put her in the attic" or kill her... one of which Laurence Dominic has suggested, and the second of which he has actually tried.
Wouldn't a more appropriate response be to restore the original personality, tell them "sorry, it wasn't working out," and send them on their way? I assume Topher has a way to wipe all memory of the Dollhouse from their minds, so security shouldn't be an issue.
I'm still waiting for any evidence to suggest that these people are allowed to go back to their lives after their five-year terms are up.

Wow, by far the best episode so far IMO. I didn't think I would like it but it was great!. I like the relationship Claire and Topher have. I did see "Joss" in this episode which is probably why I liked it so much.

Brilliant!! One of the best of yet. You could see Joss-ness humor in this one more so then the others. Which was good. I loved the T/S moments they were nice! Roll on next week!

I think that Laurence Dominic, the security chief, is working with Alpha.
We're led to believe he tried to kill Echo in order to eliminate her as a liability to the Dollhouse. But...
A. He killed the cult leader, saving Echo.
B. He simply knocked her out instead of shooting her with the gun he had, knowing that Boyd was somewhere close by, and would find her before she burned.
C. He took off his mask and showed his face to her before he hit her, which he had no apparent reason to do.
I think he wasn't there to kill Echo at all. He was there to save her from the cult leader, and then to do something to her that would shock her into becoming more self-aware... through anger.
"I can see perfectly." Mission accomplished.

I loved it. I think the episode showed that Joss had a bit more control (although he doesnt get all control until next). I think the storyline was actually good and the episode showed us that its not only personality that can be changed in the dolls but physical factors can also be changed.
Favorite part: Victor having a "man reaction" I FOUND THIS HILARIOUS TOO lol
I read the pilot script today and it had Joss printed all over it. I think this episode (ep5) was a bit more Whedonish than the previous episodes and therefore believe that the rest of the season starting next week (ep6) will be Whedonish just like the pilot was seing as Fox has given up. Personally I think its Foxs fault that the serious kicked off so badly. They should have gave whedon control from the start

Everyone's saying they see Joss in this episode, which I think is very true. But I just wanted to say that it feels to me more like we're seeing Minear realizing Joss' vision in this episode. Tim Minear really delivered an amazing script and episode. Great job and kudos to him.

Ooo, forgot about Wyn's fun discussion questions!
Episode 4: Gray Hour - Questionnaire Favorite character: Adelle. Me-ow! Least favorite character: That ATF guy who faked the note. Favorite scene: Of course, the scenes between Topher and Claire. I also liked the scene when Sparrow was interrogating Esther. Least favorite scene: That freaky singing! I'm going to have nightmares. Biggest surprise: Laurence being the one who "saved" Echo. I thought it would obviously be Boyd. Thing you saw coming a mile away: Esther saving everyone. Thoughts on Echo's personality: Pretty cool character. I really felt for her. Thoughts on this week's engagement: Meh-ish. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the others. It was very original though, not something I'd expect. Question you want answered most: What is Laurence's problem with Echo? Favorite line: Something like: "I got a message from God, and that message is MOVE YOUR ASS!" Did you enjoy this episode more than the prior one? No. Gray Hour remains my favorite so far.

What's the song that plays when Eliza walks in and you think she's a hooker? I've looked everywhere and can't find it.

The plot was a bit meh but I'm definately enjoying the character interaction a lot more. This show may find its feet yet. My vote for second best so far, behind The Target.
