I loved this episode! So hilarious!
Adelle/Topher and Laurence/his suit were absolute gold.

"I'm your superior." "In every way." Adelle and Topher... how I've learned to love you both so. If I had to pick a best performance of the night, it would be tied between these two. Granted, they had the best lines... the one about lentils being incomprehensible was quite well delivered. Nay, very well delivered. Watching the two lying on the floor with bags of chips strewn all over the place was hilarious. "Mmmm... munchies..." Adelle on a trampoline... when I first saw the preview clip, I nearly choked. I knew it was her, but I kept thinking that it had to be someone else... until she started clambering over the banister. Topher running around in his boxer-briefs... I really do have a thing for nerds. *sigh* This episode delivered the funnies, but would I rank it over last week's? No. It did provide a LOT of very valuable insight into the past, and it was kinda cool (but cliched) how the opening and ending sequences mirrored each other. So the guy is probably gonna sign on the dotted line... But hey, confirmation that "Mellie" is indeed November (she was identified to be a sleeper Active last ep, but was unnamed). Kinda sad to see the end of the Mellie/Paul fling/thing for now. Did anyone find it interesting that Echo could deny her treatment offer from Boyd? The Actives are supposed to trust their handlers unconditionally, and yet Echo just said "No". Probably caused by her memories over-riding her imprint, but possibly also because she recognized Boyd as not being trustworthy at the moment? EDIT: Tyler, the episode wasn't written by Joss. It doesn't mean that it wasn't very good, but I just wanted to point that out. I know it wasn't. But he still oversees everything.

Okay, but I thought I should point that out because it sounded like you thought he wrote the episode here: And we all know Joss loves his funny...and writes it really well which is a plus. This episode shows that Joss can put that funny, awesome dialogue spin on anything he gets his hands on.

I loved it... almost as good as last week's.
Tons of exposition and background. Lots of good old Whedonesque humor. All the dolls in action. Super sexy Eliza.
The Topher/Adelle stoned scenes were hilarious. (I thought they were going to end up having sex, and was very glad they didn't). Laurence Dominic was also a funny drunk. And I'm not sure whether his need to apologize to Echo works for or against my theory that he's in league with Alpha. With his inhibitions gone, can we take it at face value when he said "I tried to kill you"... meaning he really was trying to do that? But if he really was trying to kill her, why does he feel bad about it?
Also, this episode proves that Dominic, Adelle, Topher, and Boyd are not Dolls, since they reacted to the drug with intoxication rather than with memory flashbacks, as Echo and Victor and Sierra and November did.
So it looks like we have a new Doll coming in. I wonder what his code name will be. (Please don't make him "Zulu.")
Eliza was very leggy in this episode. This is a good thing.

Great catch! I hadn't thought about how we finally have proof they can't be dolls. I've always believed that would be all kinds of stupid for the people running the Dollhouse to be dolls themselves because as we can see, the dolls malfunction A LOT. But it's nice to finally be able to kill that speculation.

But if he really was trying to kill her, why does he feel bad about it? Probably because his beef with Echo isn't as personal as it seems. He doesn't like her because she's a risk to the organization, and he is head of security. Meaning that he probably has an over-reaching urge to eliminate anything and everything that may pose a threat to the Dollhouse. I'd imagine he's paid quite handsomely for enforcing his impulses. But all that aside, he may not be as cold-blooded as all that. His actions are fueled by what he knows, or thinks he knows; that Echo is glitching and manifesting similar phenomena that was observed in Alpha before he went all Jack the Ripper.

I thought of that too, but then checked the cast info on both "Echoes" and "Needs", and different names for the guy playing Sam and Mike .

I loved this episode! Funniest one yet! I love the Adelle/Topher scenes.. great Joss stuff there. Did anyone else get reminded of 'Band Candy' while watching this?
So do we know all we need to know about why Caroline became an active? We know this: *Caroline was in love *Caroline knew that they were doing animal testing in the Rossum Building. *Caroline made a plan to break in and record the animals in distress and give it to the authorities. *Caroline breaks in with her boyfriend; They almost get caught; he get's shot *Caroline is later seen in the hospital with Adelle coming to visit. She escapes before Adelle arrives.
All we need is to know how the latter event links with the scene we've seen in both the beginning of the pilot and this episode.
My question is, if we rewatched the first scene from 'Ghost', would we understand what Caroline was rambling about? (I wish I could rewatch it but it's not on hulu anymore)

Unlike many of you, I wasn't too fond of this episode of Dollhouse. I still liked it but it wasn't my cup of tea if you know what I mean. So Sam is going to be recruited? What the heck is up with that? He's a killer for crying out loud. Was Alpha's real personality a killer too? How did everyone get treated? There must have been hundreds of kids on that campus and there's no way all of them could be and treated. Why did Echo escape from the hospital? Couldn't she have walked ou the front door? Or was it like a mental hospital because maybe Echo was severely traumatized by the death of her boyfriend. It was nice seeing Matt again. Handlers are creepers! Do they watch their dolls every move when they're rented out? Or just their pulse or whatever from like what we saw in The Target? I wonder how Boyd feels about Echo being sent out to have sex with strangers.

Do they watch their dolls every move when they're rented out? Or just their pulse or whatever from like what we saw in The Target? I wonder how Boyd feels about Echo being sent out to have sex with strangers. Why do Actives sign up anyway? It seems that the promise for a new beginning is a very tempting offer. Killers, damaged soldiers, heartbroken prostitutes... all probably the ideal candidates for becoming Actives. I don't think a treatment was needed. Topher found out that the drug is degraded over time. Meaning that all you have to do is keep the kids sedated long enough that the effects wear off. Funnily enough, this was already known to us quite early on in the episode because Sam told Echo that the effects wear off after a bit. As for handlers... I think they usually monitor their charges as best they can. Usually, they stay out of sight, and monitor their heart rates and all that, but Boyd was trying to track Echo down because she had acted outside the parameters of her engagement. As for why Echo escaped... who knows? But we know that the events of that night when her boyfriend is shot happen approximately 2 years before her meeting with DeWitt (if DeWitt's comment about them doing the dance for 2 years is accurate). I'd imagine trespassing on a guarded facility like that is a rather serious offense. Not to mention that the Rossum Corp. probably seriously want her taken in before she blabs about what she saw.

as for echo saying no to boyd, i tok that as her seeing that boyd was not hiself. remember that woman saying that he had mansions in his eyes and that she could see the doors... he clearly was not himself and echo saw that. she wasn't necessarly afraid of him but she did not trust him as she usually does.

Boyd wasn't affected yet when the woman said that to him. He was affected when he brushed her hand away as she was reaching to touch him. But I agree with the assessment as to why Echo didn't trust Boyd.

Fantastic episode. :-)
I'm still intrigued by Adelle/Caroline relationship (specially the "two years dance"). Too bad for Paul/Mellie, though... (I never really liked banners that much, but a cool one I think would be Adelle jumping on the trampoline and saying "I am VERY... British!". The whole dialogue was beautiful, but that has to be the best line, ever. )

I'm praying there will be a commentary with Fran Kranz and Olivia Williams for this episode. I keep rewatching their scenes. "Tell him I said hi!"

Favorite character: Adelle and Laurence. Both were just awesome and hysterical in this episode.
Least favorite character: Sam, it was pretty obvious around halfway through that he was the cause of the entire mess.
Favorite scene: The scene where Laurence first snaps, and when Topher and Adelle slowly start to go crazy. Brilliant dialogue.
Least favorite scene: The early scenes between Sam and Alice/Echo were rather boring.
Biggest surprise: Probably the stuff about Caroline's backstory, considering we knew next to nothing about her prior to this episode.
Thing you saw coming a mile away: Like I mentioned before, Sam being the episode's bad guy was pretty easy to figure out, just by the way he acted.
Thoughts on Echo's personality: Alice...meh. Probably my least favorite of Echo's personality. At least in "Ghost" she wore that awesome dress and danced. It would have been cooler if she had been Taffy or someone again and saw the news story and rushed to the college. That would have made for much more interesting scenes with Eliza.
Question you want answered most: Who is the "inside man"? Same as last week, still.
Did you enjoy this episode more than the prior one?: Nope, but this was my second favorite episode.
