Solicitations are out! Covers: HQ covers! Thanks narflet! BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #27
Written by Jane Espenson, penciled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, covers by Jeanty and Jo Chen.
"Retreat," part 2 of 5. Slayers are out. Vampires are in. Mysterious big bad Twilight has just become a bigger bad -- he can zero in on Team Buffy and her army of Slayers by tracking their use of magic. But Buffy and her allies have taken their submarine -- yes, Buffy picked up one of those ... they're a necessary piece of equip -- straight to the only person she knows with an inside track on suppressing magic: the werewolf Oz.
In the yak-filled mountains of Tibet, Oz has found his peace and formed a new life. The butter tea flows freely at the reunion, where -- among other fun reunion-y things -- Buffy learns that suppressing her demon side could be the biggest risk of all ...
40 pages, $2.99, in stores on August 5. _____________________________________________________ Xander and Dawn enjoying tea, alone, in Tibet...huh? I wonder if love is blooming. Let me say 'ugh!' to that! PREVIEWS

Hmm... Xander regained some weight... his chin is definitely looking less male model-y again. Which is cool... that's the way I remember him looking anyway. I take it that's Oz in the variant, fending off the inner wolf? And anti-gorilla wolf peeps rejoice... it's an actual wolfy werewolf!

Wow... the return of the Slayer Sub... and, uh, it's sitting in a meadow in the mountains.
And is that Oz vs. Andrew? I suspected Oz's return wouldn't be the smooth feel-good festival some were assuming...
I believe I am going to die of impatience before this arc starts. Could someone PLEASE contact me via ouija board and tell me how it turns out?
So does this mean Oz doesn't show up until #27? That would explain his absence from Georges' #26 cover.

Ahhhhh the covers are so beautiful. Jeanty's is amazing: the gob on that werewolf is ferocious. And it appears that werewolves in season eight will resemble to those of the dark horse comics, and not like the tv series. The ink on the Jeanty cover is particularly outstanding -- a greater improvement from #22 or #26 for examples.

Interesting covers. Chen's one is a little weird... I think that's Dawn next to Xander, if only because they both weren't on the #26 cover. I thought that was Andrew on the variant cover as well, but he has ginger hair so I'm pretty sure it's Oz vs. his inner wolf. Delighted to see the return of the cool werewolf as well.

The comic sounds really cool although i'm not a big fan of the cover art in this one. Im only on issue 5 lol. But I will be buying the graphic novels to catch up quickly.
Glad to see that Oz is back but I would love Tara or Anya to get a go at the comics ;D

Wow, awesome covers. Great to see Xander on a Jo cover again, and Georges is equally as impressive. This "suppression of magic" story line sounds really cool, especially with Buffy.

I think that is Dawn on Jo's cover, because of her hair color and because Willow doesn't usually dress like that nowadays.
That may be Oz on Georges' cover, but it looks a LOT like Andrew to me.

I'll see that 'ugh' and raise you a "ewww'. Why does that cover give me the wiggins? Sorry, the hook possibility just icks me out.
I've seen there has been debate rather its Willow or Dawn. I can see why some may think its Willow, but I think its Dawn. It even looks like really young S5 Dawn, which just makes the idea of random hook up even more icky to me.
And the other cover definitely looks more like Andrew than Oz, but based on the outfit I'm guessing its Oz. But if I didn't know Oz was going to be in this arc and I didn't know what he would wear now, I would have never guessed it.

Anyone noticed that the variant cover is done in the same style as the #10 variant, where the inks are very muted, and it almost looks like watercolor over pencils?
I'm pretty sure it's Oz too, battling his inner wolf. Something about that outfit is more Oz-like. And the red hair. The likeness isn't the greatest but the maw on that wolf is freaky. And hey, may not even be Oz's inner wolf... could be another werewolf. Wonder how they got the sub up to the Tibetan plains... pretty sure there's no water in sight nearby. Magic probably, but that would leave a trace... But I guess this proves the sub naysayers wrong. Those who were freaking out about the sub, and how it was stupid because the sub served no real purpose other than a "look Ma, no SFX budget!" plot development. Always a purpose for everything... rocket launcher made an encore performance, and now the sub. I for one, am giddy.

I really like both covers. The concept for Jo's cover is nice, I like the sub and Xander and Dawn look good, but it's just unfacinating, probably one of my least favorite covers. Jeanty's cover is really cool, the Oz likeness is pretty good and the wolf looks awesome.

I'm gonna chime in here and say at first I believed it was Willow, but now I believe it's Dawn (Willow doesn't wear pants anymore haha). And I don't see her and Xander having tea together as an indication they are going to hook up. They have a lot of brother/sister vibe going on for me, way more than Buffy/Xander.
Also, I completely echo wenxina's thoughts that it is Oz battling his inner wolf; the jewelry totally screams Oz over Andrew. Hooray for snouted werewolf! lol.
I love both covers. It's interesting the contrast between the two, one is very serene, the other violent. I don't know much about comic cover art, but I really like the way these two turned out. Chen's Dawn likeness keeps channeling Alyson's nose, but the mouth and eyes are totally Dawn.
EDIT: I'm gonna concur with AndrewCrossett that Oz won't show up until #27, at the earliest the end of #26 (that would make a great last panel). I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there'll be another Twilight encounter in #26.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there'll be another Twilight encounter in #26. I'm sure Twilight will be in it (Warren and Amy too, I think). I'm not sure if they'll directly encounter Buffy & Co., but this is the issue where things need to REALLY turn nasty fast. In one issue we have to go from Buffy's Slayers doing group calisthenics on the lawn of their mansion, to having to flee to Tibet to escape Twilight. I think #26 will see the destruction of the new HQ and, possibly, a few Slayer deaths. I thought that might happen at the end of #25, but apparently they want the "Retreat" story to be self-contained (which makes sense from the TPB marketing standpoint).
