One of the interesting things about never having watched a single episode of Buffy until six years after it went off the air is the effect of getting exposed to little tidbits about various episodes long before you actually see them.
For instance, before watching "Once More With Feeling," I'd seen bits of Joss Whedon interviews where he mentioned that Amber Benson and Anthony Stewart Head are great singers, that he knew from the beginning Benson would do "the ballad," that Sarah Michelle Gellar initially wanted to have a voiceover artist do her songs, and that Michelle Trachtenberg was uncomfortable enough singing that she asked for her pieces to be done in dance form instead.
As a result, as beautiful as Benson's and Head's performances were in "Under Your Spell" and "Standing," they weren't surprising because I knew to expect them both to have great voices.
But I ended up being really surprised by SMG and Trachtenberg's performances. Both have such beautiful, clear voices that it amazes me that they didn't think they could pull it off.

I was surprised by alot of the performances. Although Alysons was terrible. Michelle only sang a bit but I don't see why she didn't sing more, she wasn't all that bad. Anthony and Amber were amazing.
The most surprising for me was Emma. I thought she was great.

I was surprised by alot of the performances. Although Alysons was terrible. I don't know that I'd call it terrible -- although she didn't have great intonation and clearly wasn't a trained singer, she still managed to hit all the notes, which is more than a lot of the general non-Hollywood population would probably be able to manage. Does anybody know if Amber Benson has had formal voice training? I would think that the kind of control and accuracy she has in "Under Your Spell" wouldn't come without training, or at least a lot of practice -- especially since it was apparently written above her normal range -- but maybe she's just naturally that good.

I would say the ones I was most surprised by were Tony, Amber, and James. That being said, I think they all did phenomenal jobs and I love all the songs!

Alysan said in an interview "Thanks to the wonders of technology" meaning her parts were edited and they were still bad I would assume Amber has had training, she was really good.

Well, with respect to Aly she did not do much singing. I'm quite sure that if I were in that position I would have done a far worse job. Michelle had like one line of singing (as per requested) but her ballet moves were fantastic in my opinion. I really loved Emma and Nicky's number. The Dance moves are great. love the 1940's style of it all. And I love the part where Emma goes all rock-n-roll in "I've Got a Theory" and starts belting at the top of her lungs. I believe she said that this was due to her constantly screaming heavy metal at Joss on set, so he threw that in there for her as a joke.

I was pleasantly surprised with Michelle's singing--she really wasn't that bad! My favorites are obviously James, Tony, and Amber. I adore Tony's voice as it is, so it was a wonderful thing to hear him sing in a few songs. My favorite songs are pretty much tied, as the number with Tony & Amber and James's "Rest in Peace" being the best.
Sarah's wasn't that bad, but it made me feel better about my voice, ha ha!

I expected Head and Marsters to be good cuz I already knew of their musical background beforehand.
Hannigan, Brendon and Trachtenberg didn't really show off their voices. Brendon pretty much stayed in his low comfy range, so it was just "okay".
I liked Caulfield's voice and style, but she REALLY messed up in some parts by not enunciating, which I felt kinda took away from her performance.
As for Gellar, she didn't exactly WOW me, but she carried the songs well and was a great lead. I'm personally glad she didn't let another person sing for her.
The actress who surprised me the most was Benson because I didn't know that she could sing, and she sang like an angel. Very beautiful ballad.

Amber, James and Tony surprised me the most, as I didn't know they could sing at the time I watched the episode.

Emma's performance really surprised me out of all of them. She was great at singing and dancing and was completely entertaining. You could tell that she had some dance lessons with the execution of her marks. Besides that, personally, Alyson wasn't that bad! I would've been fine if she sang a bit more actually.

The most talented were Anthony and Amber, IMO. They both are full of talent.
I also loved SMG in the songs. Her voice really showed the emotion written out in the lyrics.

I can't really say anything surprised me, since it was one of the first episodes I saw when I first became a fan, so I didn't know much about the actors then. But, based on what I know of them now, Nick and Emma, for sure. Since Tony and James had already been singing, it's not a surprise that they were good (although my boyfriend claims James can't sing, and hated Ghost of the Robot when I played it for him ). I'm guessing Amber had formal training since Joss said she could sing, so she's not too much of a surprise. But Nick and Emma... they were so good! I don't really know about Emma's past, if she ever danced or sang, but I'm pretty sure Nick never did. Am I right? The fact that he learned a dance like that with no prior training is freakin' amazing...I am a horrible dancer, and could never have done it. I'm the person that gets non-dancing roles in musicals, and sings from behind the stage during dance numbers.

I can honestly say that all of them surprised me. Even tough I had heard Head sing as Giles before that (I might have heard Marsters before that).
Anyway, everytime they opened their mouths I was floored.
Usually when I see someone on TV that's going to sing, and I like them(characters or real people) I get nervous and expect failure. So imagine my surprise when beautiful after beautiful song came out.

Amber. I wouldn't think that someone who was so quiet would have such a good voice. I wouldn't say that any of them were bad, they were all fairly good considering singing and dancing aren't what their profession is.

Then again, if they had used Jewel or whoever it was gonna be for her songs, it'd be even lamer. It may have sounded better, but come on. After more than five seasons, we know Buffy's speaking voice, and her singing voice wouldn't sound like Jewel.

When watching the episode for the very first time, I was surprised by James Marsters and Anthony Head's singing abilities. I thought James was a great singer, he surprised me the most really, so his song is one of my favourites, along with Tony's song and his duet with Amber

One thing I just noticed is that I especially like the way Amber sounds during the "Wish I could trust that it was just this once" portion of the duet, which is a little bit lower than the rest. Makes me wonder if that's a more natural pitch for her.
