I watched the first season of True Blood on HBO and loved it! I didn't realize the books existed until a friend of mine let me borrow them. I just finished # 8 From Dead To Worse, and am waiting on # 9 Dead and Gone to be shipped to me so I can devour it. I noticed that some other people on here had mentioned reading them or having an interest, so I figured I would start a thread where we can discuss them.
So far I have loved what I read. (And Sorry to Twilight lovers but it is executed sooo much better, in my opinion.) I think the world created in these books is very addicting to me because it takes place in modern times and vamps are "out of the coffin" and can interact with normal people; but you also have surprising types of fantastical creatures as well as supernatural.
I definately think the author is a Buffy fan, cause she mentions it in her books a couple of times, and also I feel that Sookie is kind of modeled after Buffy a little, which maybe is another reason I like them so much. So it would be awesome if i had someone else to talk about these books with, but until I catch up and finish the last book (until #10 comes out that is) can you please use spoiler buttons for anything in Dead And Gone? That would be much appreciated!

I love the Sookie Stackhouse books! I watched the first season of True Blood, and then I eventually got some of the books, and then I immediately had to get all of the books. I am easily obsessed.
I keep telling my one friend to watch True Blood, or read the books because I think he would enjoy them. Or rather, I think that everyone would enjoy them because I like them so much, which is not necessarily true. He refuses to try them though. He thinks they will be a less good version of Twilight. I yelled at him, and I wanted to violently shake him, because the Sookie Stackhouse books are so much better than Twilight. It's kind of like the adult version, which is not saying they are particularly similar. Twilight is just really romanticized, Edward Cullen is this perfect being, yada yada yada. The Sookie Stackhouse books are more geared to adults because beyond the fantasy elements, it is somewhat realistic. The relationships aren't perfect, and life is hard, and the line between good and bad is not quite so defined.
And.. pretty much Eric Northman is my favorite character. I reread book 4 twice. I think I just have a thing for blond vampires, because I loved Spike too. I have a 6 ft tall Spike cutout in my room even. He scares my friends sometimes.

Wow! I'm jealous of the Spike cutout! And Spike and Eric are my faves, even though I've never been particularly interested in blondes aside from those two.
I think there are alot of parallels between the way Spike and Eric treat Buffy and Sookie differently than Angel and Bill that I love. Like Bill professes to love Sookie sooo much and be her end-all be-all forever love, but who paves her driveway and buys her a coat? Eric. And It just seems to me that both Buffy and Sookie are soooo obsessed with being in love with Angel and Bill that they overlook the chemistry they have will Spike and Eric, and also overlook how much more Spike/Eric are in love with them than the others, and how Spike/Eric would do anything in the world for the girls. Like getting a soul, or offering to give up everything to come live with Sookie and support her.
But yes, definately waaay better than Twilight. I also have bugged all of my friends to try to watch True Blood or at least read the books, but they keep pushing it off.

I completely agree with you. Bill was saying 'Sookie is MINE' after maybe three episodes, but who does he send all kinds of money to? The Bellefleurs, who he does not even like. And that whole thing with Lorena was totally shady. I wish that were exactly how it would play out in the tv show, because I really dislike Bill at this point, and if True Blood fans are still going gah-gah over him I will be really sad. Some ways that they changed the show were good though. I liked the bit about Godric being Eric's maker. It showed that his character had actual depth. Pam is probably my second favorite character. Not sure if this is actually from the last book, but I thought I'd be on the safe side despite it not being vital to the plot. Didn't want to ruin it for you. Pam telling the new bartender to go ask Sookie for mercy was hysterical. And she was only the direct cause of two of their deaths. Chow was more about Eric.

I agree with you, siredbyspike, about Sookie being based off of Buffy on some level. When I first started reading the books and watching the show, I couldn't help but think of the episode of Buffy, Earshot, where Buffy could hear what everyone was thinking. And i felt like that episode may have, in part, inspired Charlaine Harris.
I love the books and love the show. Though I'm interested to see where the show is going in comparison to the books. I can't wait to see how true to the books it stays or how it becomes its own entity separate from the book series
