***This is a spoiler discussion, so please be aware of that*** The fans are pretty much exploding all over the place about this. As I am certain many of you are following the story, I thought we should have a single thread containing the pieces to this puzzle. Check out the articles below, and then feel free to talk about them at length. Part 1: Behind Buffy's Twilight Reveal aka Big mistakes, and fans left reeling Part 2:The Buffy/Angel Continuity Conundrum aka Bill Willingham starts a firestorm Part 3:Joss Whedon: Twilight, Buffy & Beyond, Part 1 (of 2) aka Joss answers Bill, the controversy, and the Scott Allie haters Joss Whedon: Twilight, Buffy & Beyond, Part 2 (of 2) aka Joss talks about Season 8 commitments, teases about what's to come, as well as hints as to how Season 9 will be organizedI have no comment since I am mentally drained... Be sure to check back at CBR for the remaining parts of their interview with Joss Whedon.

Good idea, CBG. This should help us keep all the news straight.

I like this line from the first Joss interview:
"The intent was always that, when Angel finally showed up [in the pages of "Buffy"], we'd make some very vague comment saying how "Things had gotten very funky, and now I'm here doing whatever it is I'm doing" which people now unfortunately know. [Laughs] Actually, they really don't, but that will become clear later."

That line jumped out at me too Andrew Joss is a funny and mysterious man, he always has to give us something to make us go "Hmmm, maybe we don't know what he's talking about?" Thanks for putting this is one thread, I've been MIA lately and didn't see much of this so it was good to have it all spoonfed to me! *karmas* I didn't realise people were Scott-bashing? Could someone explain to me why he was getting so much backlash?

Scott's gotten hate for a few comments he has made. Most of it wasn't deserved, the biggest scandal being that he didn't like Spike and was influencing Season 8 to never include him or to make Buffy end up with Angel. That was one of the most ridiculous fandom squabbles I've ever seen and I still scratch my head at it. He's also made a few comments regarding IDW that weren't well received.
Regardless of all that though, MOST of the Allie bashing has been completely unwarranted and blown out of proportion.

The Allie hate occurs at other message boards as well as Whedonesque...where it's actually the same members anyway. Thankfully everyone here seems to like him and are grateful for the monthly Q&A sessions. I think he just speaks like a normal guy, sometimes doesn't pillow his words with intense care, and that is fine with me. If he doesn't like Spike, which I am not even sure he said like that, it's his opinion. Doesn't mean it has any bearing on a story helmed by Joss...at all. It would be the same if I were the editor. I really dislike Dawn, but does that mean Joss won't do anything with her since I don't like her? Doubtful.

I think Bill is kind of out of line here. I mean, sure, things may have been said that could be read out of context, but the way he is expressing himself in that letter just makes me want to say "Hey, you didn't create Angel, now did ya, eh?!"
I must say, I would take these Buffy comics over the Angel ones any day (but I really miss After the Fall -- such great dialogue and creative work done on the writers/illustrators part!)

I'm severely pissed off at this still. If my family knew anything about Buffy or Whedon I'd be ranting about it with them all day, but alas, they are uneducated about such wonders.
Can someone tell me how the spoiler emerged? Was it just because someone released the wrong covers?

Wrong covers were released. Someone told Georges (would be nice if it was me, since I did pretty much contact him right away who then contacted Scott, who then contacted Joss. They decided to just confirm the whole thing rather than dance and be coy, or to swamp us with multiple fake covers to keep us guessing. Then came the Twitter and facebook fiasco. But I think you'll be able to come up with a better idea of what happened from reading the articles linked in the OP.

I've explained and ranted about the whole fiasco to anyone who'll listen (my family, my friends, my dog, random people I pass in the street . . .) I'm a little placated because it was a mistake releasing- the covers. Nobody was being intentionally cruel and we're all human so it's forgivable

Thanks CBG & Wyndam.
Hmmm, well from all the Scott interviews I've read (not the ones pertaining to him not liking Spike and that though) he seems like he's just your average Joe, and so he should be. I don't think his comments about IDW were meant to be taken maliciously by those concerned or Bill, and I think it was taken out of proportion a bit. I also agree the Bill seems like he needs someone to wake him up to the fact he is playing in Joss' sandpit with Joss' toys and he needs to be grateful for that, while still being happy with the credit that he does get for his stories and his work.
I also wanted to say hahaha at Joss 'repugnant' line at the end. It's pretty much his only catty remark and the rest of it is just smoothing the waters and non-confrontative.

Am I the only one who's really enjoying all this scandal? No I'm lapping it up too my worst fear was that Twilight's identity would be an anti-climax and this is anything but I am incredibly excited for #33 now, and am very happy with the way things have worked out as long as IDW's series isn't compromised because they're running some great storylines

Am I the only one who's really enjoying all this scandal? Na. I am too. But on the Buffy/Angel Continuity Conundrum, if they leave After the fall alone (as Canon) I am happy if DH just go on from there with Angel's back story in becoming twilight, I am still going to read the other Angel comics, Spike on going and spin-offs, even if I have to think of them as set in different worlds/ time lines, I love Angel to much to let it go.

Angel #29 had the most ironic, accidentally on the nose line of dialogue I have ever read: Angel: “I guess I’m just not the evil overlord type. Not comfortable having minions constantly underfoot, cringing and obeying all the time.”Very funny, considering who wrote it as well. It definitely made me pause and chuckle.

I like his plans for how to handle Season 9. Less issues and a tighter story sounds like a great way to improve the narrative. I wouldn't say 40 issues was a mistake, but there has been pacing problems lately, and it's good to hear he knows that. And... YAY SPIKE! Buffy not knowing/knowing (hasn't really been made clear has it?) Spike is alive needs to be dealt with.
