Well, the Oscar nominees were announced this morning, so I thought I should start a thread to discuss them. A complete list can be found here. Otherwise the Best Picture nominees are: Avatar The Blind Side District 9 An Education The Hurt Locker Inglourious Basterds Precious A Serious Man Up Up in the Air For, District 9 and The Blind Side were both shockers. District 9 because genre films rarely get the recognition they deserve and The Blind Side because just doesn't look that great. The Oscars are airing March 7th, 2010.

Well that's not really fair. Did you see it? Sandra Bullock made me cry. ;( (Really. She did. She's that good. The film isn't too bad either.)
I am pretty happy that a genre film was nominated; I just wish it wasn't District 9. Absolutely NOT Best Picture material. But then, I've always been strangely in the minority on that point, and I love genre films (as a general rule). Avatar is a big "no duh", as is The Hurt Locker, Precious, and Up in the Air. Good to see another Tarantino film in the mix, as well as an animated feature (about time). A Serious Man and An Education are the wildcards here.
Curious how they bumped it up to 10 pictures this year. I wonder why? Wait, no I don't. If I do that they'll just go back to 5. I don't want that. 10 is good. 10 is interesting.

Of those 10, I've only seen Up.

Very pleased that District 9 made the list, although I'd like to see Inglourious Basterds win (best movie of 2009, imo). I think The Hurt Locker could possibly win it this year.

So happy District 9 got a nod. It obviously won't win, but it is nice to see an amazing genre film nominated. I'm also backing Inglourious Basterds but I know it's hopeless (must get Original Screenplay though!). I just hope Avatar doesn't win like at the Globes. Amazing picture and entertainment, but I just can't understand it winning over the other four I've seen.
No real surprises in the other categories. I hope Kathryn Bigelow gets Directing. And if Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique don't win their categories... my brain will explode.

District 9 was a maaaazing. And I'm not saying The Blind Side looked horrible. I just thought it looked like another sports movie. Of those 10, I've only seen Up. I haven't seen a lot of them either, but I'm still oddly very excited about the Oscars, as usual. Very pleased that District 9 made the list, although I'd like to see Inglourious Basterds win (best movie of 2009, imo). I think The Hurt Locker could possibly win it this year. Based on hype and reviews (again, I haven't seen all ten of these movies), I'd have to agree with you on The Hurt Locker. So happy District 9 got a nod. It obviously won't win, but it is nice to see an amazing genre film nominated. I was very happy District 9 got a nomination too, but it didn't last long, 'cause, as you said, it's not going to win. It just isn't. I wish Sharlto Copley got an acting nomination. He was great.

I strongly beleive Avatar will win Best Picture. Not that I think it was the Best Picture, but I think it will win.
Happy to see D9 nominated, as well as up. Still haven't seen many of the nominated films. I really want to see "Precious" and "Up in the Air".

So excited for tonight.
Ugh I can't stand the red carpet. I don't care who wore what or who wore something the best/worst... and I always watch it. The pre-red carpet special is on my tv now.

Pfft... the red carpet is pretty much half the fun for me. Most of the show is a snooze fest anyway, and lately, I've been pretty bad about watching most of the nominated films anyway, so I can't really pull for anyone. But red carpet... I can just screech obscenities at some of the couture monstrosities without feeling uninformed.

It's about to staaaaaaaaaaaart! I'm excited for the Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin hosting duo. I love them both. And Alec Baldwin never fails to make me laugh. So, we gonna keep this thread alive as it airs? C'mon, we should do a running commentary. Considering how long these things are and how boring some of the segments get to be, we should keep the entertainment hopping by posting, y/y?

Was kinda underwhelmed by NPH's opening number...
ETA: The jokes are kinda falling flat-ish for me at the moment.
