Hello everyone, I've started my new job as a admin worker for an organisation called JML. Tomarrow I have to make lots of phone calls to different organisations and i'm really scared because i'm not good at making phone calls at work in front of so many other workers. I just need some advice on staying calm, i'm kinda panicking now, but I will not give up, so that a positive.

I feel your pain. I just got my first job, doing interviews over the phone with companies. I hate talking on phones. When I see a number I don't recognize on the dial-thingy, I panic. But I get to do this job at home, in private, and the interview seem to be fairly short (they expect me to work 1,5 hours per interview, to do the interview and write a summary about it) so I think I'm better off than you. I hope it goes well, for the both of us.
The only advice I can give you is to practice the phone call in your head, or even better, write down what you want to say, and in which order. Maybe even write complete sentences. Then imagine senarios in which you can embarass yourself over the phone, and come up with solutions. It worked for me when I was in my looking-desperatly-for-a-job phase. And of course, the longer you wait between calls, the easier to lose your nerv, so when you know you have to make several calls, try doing them one after another, specially if one goes okay, because that "I can do it!" feeling might stay to the next call. If you wait, it might disapear and you're back on square on.
That's how it is for me anyway.

I completely agree with you skytte, thank you. While i was doing voluntary work at ymca i used to panic about making phone calls until i've made the first call, and then i was on fire, lol. I should be fine. I hope you are enjoying your job. My job is ok, but i'm always panicking in case i'll do something wrong or i might get into trouble and nothing wrong has happened (yet) lol. Thank you skytte.

I've had a lot of jobs over the years, and many of them involved talking to people on the phone. I am by nature kind of a shy person, so it's definitely difficult at first, but if you stay calm, relax, and smile (yes, I know, that's weird since no one will be looking at you) it will get you into the flow of speaking. It's kind of like acting. Stay confident and genuine, and I'm sure you'll do great. Good luck with your job!

Good luck with your job! drusillacakes is right - smiling makes your voice sound friendly and often the person on the other end can sense that you are smiling. Practicing first also helps - like Skytte said - write yourself a script to start with so if you go blank you can look at it and find your footing again.

Thank you very much you guys. I went to work today and i told the person in charge of me that i'm kinda panicking about making phone calls and that I need her to go through it with me and she was ok and she said that she was going to go throught it with me anyway. Luckily, I didn't make any phone calls today but i had a good day and I'm positive that they'll help me a lot anyway and i've also enjoyed reading what you guys have wrote. Thank you everybody. Plus, today i found out that one of my colleagues birthday is the same day as mine,

Many years ago, I worked for the YMCA which involved office work and answeringthe phone etc. Like you I was scared stiff. I was lucky enough to have someone to guide me through it. But I always found taking a deep breath before evey call helped. Eventually I was okay I even developed a telephone voice better than my. deeper male voice, also practice helps.
