Well it's seems about right. Within the last few months we celebrated Anya, Faith, Wesley and Xander among others that are the most popular characters in the Whedonverse. So, I think it's fair to say majority of them make it into people top ten. Plus, remember that poor bastard Riley. Lol. I am however still surprise that Dawn is getting a lot of love although I didn't vote her in my top ten.

Dawn is not one of my favourite characters, but she definitely had her place in the buffyverse, and not just as the key. I think she made buffy grow up a bit more, especially when her mom died and she had to take care of not only herself, but a child too. I'm not sure what my favourite episode with Dawn in is as none really stand out to me, but I did like her in OMWF. She could be quite whiney sometimes, but other times she could be really sweet and caring.

First off, here's some irony. May is Dawn Appreciation Month. Well, my name is Dawn and my birthday is in May, so I just wanted to thank all you guys for appreciating me this month. It means so much to me. ::sniff sniff:: (Okay, sorry. In a goofy mood tonight.) I can't remember what episode it is in right off hand, but one of my favorite Dawn quotes is when Spike lights a cigarette in the kitchen at the Summer's house and Dawn says, "Great. Second-hand stinkiness." Makes me smile.

Dawn used to be my favorite character, but after watching the series a couple of times, I can see where people are coming from when they say, "Dawn's an immature, annoying little girl." I still like her a lot, but I agree with whomever wrote, "I felt that the writers were inconsistent with her maturity. You weren't sure whether or not she was 10 or 15 at times." Nonetheless, I think she shines in the seventh season. I was really hoping that after Sunnydale fell, Dawn would go on to help Giles reform the Watcher's Council, because she is so good at research and keeping a relatively cool head. It's a shame that the series only had her "grown up" for one season. I would've liked to have seen what Michelle Trachtenburg would have done with her character. In season 8, I'm not really happy with her character either, but my final judgment is still up in the air until the series ends.

Damn, I still have to give all my answers for this. But I wanna be thorough, so I keep putting it off until I have time... But in the meantime, Courtney, can you give some examples of what you're talking about? 'Cause I actually had the exact opposite experience of you: didn't really like Dawn much at first, but the more I re-watch, the more I see her growing and maturing as she goes along--especially in S7, but even in S6 (not counting the bout of kleptomania). In many ways, she's like the female Xander: a character with no superpowers, who still manages to be brave and strong amid all the chaos, and who wants to be there to help and support her friends. That's one of the things that I really love about her: she's the exact opposite of a coward or a 'fraidy-cat. She sees danger, and she wants to charge right into it and help her friends fight it, and the only reason she didn't get to do very much of that was that Buffy was always grabbing her and saying, "Whoa, not so fast--get back here where it's safe." The "immature, whiny" thing is maybe-- maybe--valid in S5. She's 14, and Buffy herself admitted to still being immature at 16 ("I'm a teen--I have yet to mature"), and considering all that Dawn was going thru that year, I think that at least a little whining was justified. But that's really all it was, IMO: "a little whining". Yet somehow the people who don't like her have managed to blow that way out of proportion and turn it into, like, her defining character trait, when that's just not the case.

I remember hearing rumors (and like I said, they were rumors) that the writers actually researched the various ways people react to grief over losing a loved one, and that was part of the reason Dawn behaved the way she did in S5 and S6. She lost her mom in S5, and Buffy at the end of S5, and then has to deal with her dead sister no longer being dead. I think they were really attempting to make her a real greiving person. And like El Diablo said, it was hard enough being a teenager without living on top of the hellmouth and loosing so many people close to her.

I don't understand how it seems like every month more than half the people say the character is in their top ten. Definitely didn't happen for Riley appreciation month though. lol so there's a start. I like the idea that they researched how people grieve. That was something that I realized about Dawn/Connor haters is that people really didn't consider everything that happened to them. In this case Dawn, but really if a regular person went through everything Dawn did they would probably be worse then a klepto who occationally screams a triple "Get Out!" to their family.

But in the meantime, Courtney, can you give some examples of what you're talking about? I'll totally do that...when I have the time as well. I've been a little busy but I do agree with a lot of your viewpoints. I'll get back to it when I can.
