I have to say, Ryall is as classy as ever. What a stand up guy. He's doing a Q&A btw at the IDW Angel Forums. It's still hard for me to pin down my feelings on this. I love IDW. They've done great things with Angel. They're a fantastic company that has treated the series with a lot of respect and heart. I'd be lying if I wasn't curious and excited to see what Dark Horse's plans are for the Buffyverse and Season 9/New titles, with both under one roof. I hope they deliver something special where both series are respected. The ball's in their court now and I'm looking forward to what happens. I'm also looking forward to enjoying the rest of IDW's run.

Anyone else hoping that Joss will not get hired doing anything else so he can focus on the comics from now on? After having seen Dollhouse, I can't say I'm excited to see more on screen stuff from him. Maybe if he once again used characters I can actually like.

Erm... he's already busy with the Avengers, so no such luck, hon.

I know. But I'm afraid he'll start doing something more, like Dr Horrible 2, and that the horror movie has a lot of work left. He seems to be a workaholic. I wouldn't be suprised if he started something completely new sometimes soon.

We were concerned before that his Avengers work might make him too busy to give season 9 the proper attention. With a canonical Angel and/or Spike series also requiring his supervision, that would be twice as much a concern... unless those series are just going to be integrated into season 9.
And if things go as they should, Joss will be more busy after The Avengers comes out, not less.

Well, the ANGEL and SPIKE series can be integrated into S9 without slighting them, since the proposed structure is to have different books focusing on different characters. So the books would be titled "ANGEL" and "SPIKE", meaning that there really should be no real change to what we're already getting now.
As for Joss' schedule... it sounds like he'll be taking a more exclusive Executive Producer role for S9, vs. the current Executive Producer/writer/re-writer/editor/art supervisor/occasional project refocuser role. I'm just hoping that Dark Horse makes it work. That's all. If they succeed, it'll be a great triumph. But if not planned and executed properly, the entire thing could devolve into a simmering puddle of doodoo real fast.

I wouldn't be suprised if he started something completely new sometimes soon. Cabin in the Woods has been done for a while. MGM was going to convert it to 3D, then MGM ran out of money. In any case, he let slip he was working on something with Warren Ellis when the Avengers call came, and Ellis was willing to wait, so it's safe to say most of Joss's energies will be on making The Avengers.

They've previously said they cannot publish an Angel title without an Angel license. IDW currently holds the Angel license. Presumably two rival publishing companies can't share the same license (can they?) so then... Oh, no, I didn't mean that that was an assumption. That was just a true story. I meant 47kwest's assumption that this had been all worked out to everyone's happiness and there was no harm no foul. I mean, logically, Angel is IDW's top selling title. I doubt it went like this: SCOTT: We have a crazy big plan for Season Nine. Can we have Angel? IDW: Well, since you've been such a gentleman to us, then SURE here, enjoy! Everything you speculated on, Emmerz, was spot on, IMO. We also just have had super different emotional reactions to it.

What made IDW give up the license? Or were they forced?

No idea. I highly doubt we'll ever find out, as I'm sure it'd end up looking either a) super businessy, b) really ugly, or c) all of the above.
I've been told that C is usually the safest bet in multiple choice.

I wonder where the IDW series could have lead to. Maybe they had plans for years ahead.

The fact that this, Dark Horse acquiring Angel from IDW while they were in the middle of publishing an on-going, answers your question. It's a no.

@pat: I get that you're quite personally invested in this whole thing, but I'm asking you to please refrain from posting expletives on the public spaces of the forum, out of respect for our rules. This whole thing has pretty much caught everyone off guard, and I've read plenty of emotional outbursts so far. Most of us appreciate the interest and hard work that IDW has (yes, present tense, since they still hold the license until next year) put into the ANGEL franchise, even if some of us haven't liked the results for a while now.
I think it was Emmie who stated (over at Whedonesque) than IDW's license was ending in 2011. I'm not positive where that information came from, but if it was Emmie, I believe she has it somewhere. My point is, if the license was up for grabs in 2011, and Dark Horse acquired it, then this was a business transaction. I'm sure IDW would have loved to keep the license, but as you said, we'll probably never know what went down.

It certainly ends in 2011 with #44. It's been announced by Ryall and Scott. Well, Ryall a bit later.
Sorry for the F-Bomb, but, uh... in my defense, I've seen many, many four letter words go unchallenged in the past, so I kinda thought that was fine. Is that a new rule?

Nope... old rule. Something about keeping the place as PG-13 as possible. Also with the respect thing. I'm sure there have been f-bombs dropped in the past that went unchallenged. We tend to miss those, especially when the boards go wild with news like this. ETA: Anyhoo, Buffyfest has an interview with Scott Allie re: the move HERE.
