Issue 3 Entries
[/center]After a slight miscommunication, I believe we have received all eligible entries. Remember you must be SUBSCRIBED to the Angel comic to submit an idea.
Here are the concept ideas submitted for Issue 3, please examine them thoroughly as the highest voted will be declared the winner! You may only vote once, so make sure that your decision is the final one!
9567 - We see a huge burst of fire coming from above (we don't see the source of the fire). Illyria is shielding herself behind a burned out car, with a huge blood-covered axe. She's got bruises on her face with few burn marks but still looking determined, gnashing her teeth and read to charge at her attacker.
9670 - Illyria is standing in the dragon's mouth holding its massive jaws
open! He is trying to bite down on her, but despite her small frail-
looking frame, she is handling the struggle with no fear on her face.
But as hot fire is starting to swell up in the dragon's throat, the
glow of sweltering flames ready to burst out at any moment, you can't
help but think 'she's certainly strong, but is she fireproof?' In the
background, Betta George the flying telepathic fish looks on in fear...
9521
Illyria has just finished defeating people who stood in her way of getting to the dragon. She is very powerful and she knows it. She has a few scrapes and tears on her clothes but you should see what she did to those who stood in her way. The blood of the people who opposed her is still dripping from her ax. She stands on top of a mountain of bones. She is nearing the dragon who is just behind her off a bit to her side just starting to breathe fire. Little does he know that this may be his last breath. She is lifting her ax and about to turn to strike the dragon. She will take him out in one strike when she hits her target. She wears a determined evil blank sort of expression on her face. Doesn’t she always? Nothing will get in her way.
Included is just a sketch of what I envision the cover to look like. There needs to be a mountain of bones. The ax should be held higher in a more powerful stance. Also, her clothes should have some blood gore and a few small tears.
9552
In Illyria’s eye’s you can see the reflection of a dragon, fear is also seen in her eyes, but she had as a small smile on her face. She loves a challenge. Angel is in the background with a pissed look at Illyria.
9697 - What I'm picturing is a close-up profile shot of Illyria on the left side of the cover. In the distance, over her shoulder on the right side of the cover, the slain dragon laying over a pile of rubble in the busted and burning LA streets. I think her eyes (or eye, 'cause... profile) should really stand out, showing the blue well. And possibly some kind of cut/blood, really offsetting the blue with deep red.
9553 - Angel faces the viewer, snarling, battle damage visible on his face, holding a sword in front of him in a menacing manner. We see the dragon behind him, its head also facing the viewer as it shoots fire out of its mouth (I'm assuming we're talking about a fire breathing dragon).
9731 - My idea for Issue 3 is a dual cover of Illyria/Fred. A closeup of their face, one side is Fred's face, while the other is Illyria's. Lying below the dual face is Wesley's body as he appeared in "Not Fade Away". Illyria/Fred's eyes are looking down at Wesley. We see the juxtaposition of the person/demon that came to make up Illyria and how an odd understanding developed between Illyria and Wesley. Possibly even a hint of grief in her eyes
9726 - My concept diverges from both of these ideas: Illyria stands confidently in the centre of the cover. In her right hand she holds the dragon's head (cut from its body) by one horn. In her left hand, she holds Angel by his neck above her head. Illyria, Angel, and the head of the dragon are all covered in the dragon's blood.
9689 - The scene is an orange-lit alley; sunset. The city seen in the background looks deserted, as nobody wants to be out past sunset now. With a slightly overhead view, in the background and facing front (but slightly at an angle) is Illyria. In the foreground is Angel with his back to us, but his head is turned toward Illyria so that we can see his profile. Illyria is casting a long shadow because of the sunset, and Angel is in a bit of a shadow himself. They are facing each other, both with their fists clenched. On the ground between them lays a scythe. Above them, standing on a rooftop, are Spike and Connor. They both look as if they are preparing to jump from the roof down into the alley. The general feel is that of an Old West-type standoff. Who can get to the scythe first?
8877 - Angel standing in front of a hall of mirrors (3 mirrors total, in front, one on the left, one on the right). On the left, the mirror is tilted upwards (symbolizes the good side) and he sees blue skies, skyscrapers, as if LA had never been sent to hell. On the right, (symbolizes the bad side) he sees nothing but flames. In the middle mirror, which is in front of him, Angel sees Illyria, Connor, Spike, and Betta George with a black background. What this says is that Angel doesn't know exactly where he stands. He can't see himself in the good, the bad, or the in between.
9585 - Since the other two covers are colorful, the third should be Black and White or Sepia tones. The Dragon should take center stage with some action or destruction. With Betta George flying over a worn out Angel.
9526 - Illyria kneeling, staring confounded and teary-eyed at Wesley's grave site. Burning in one of her hands cupped at her side is the image of Wesley holding Fred, both of them happy together in death. Surrounding her would be heads of various demons in varied states of decomposition she had slain in her failed attempts to deal with her newfound life and spark of humanity.
9663 - A Fairy-Tale With a Twist. This concept is a play on the fairy-tale sacrifice to a dragon scenario. In the upper right, taking up about 2/3 of the image we see the dragon emerging, not from a cave, but from an abandoned building. It is full of debris, with broken windows and most of one wall missing. The dragon is halfway out of the building, its mouth open and wings spread. In the bottom left corner of the scene we see the "sacrifice" -- Illyria. Instead of meekly awaiting her fate, however, she stands ready for battle, her body tensed and weapon in hand.
9667
- We see the dragon swooping down towards Illyria, huge, wings spread outward, covering the cover. Its back leg claws are spread out ready to grab her. On the body of the dragon are some cuts from the apparent fight between it and Illyria. Illyria herself is a smaller figure standing before it in defense with the axe. Angel is on the ground to the side of Illyria, as though he's been defeated by Illyria. Perhaps he is just gathering strength to take up his weapon, which is next to him, to strike her down...In the background (for what can be seen, since the dragon takes up much of the space) is the Hell-on-Earth LA cityscape, burning and smoking as always.
9615 - My version of the cover art would be focused on four women, who are standing in a circle facing outward – in a defensive position. Three of them are easily seen – Illyria (face view), Gwen (side view), Lila (side view) and the shadowy back of another woman who we cannot quite make out – Is it a slayer, an old flame, a new player….
Illyria has her huge hatchet weapon, Gwen has her crackling energy extending from her fingers, and Lila has a sword (and the scar on her neck should be visible or have a bandage there). The shadowy woman has a pike/staff in her hand and what appears to be a crossbow on her back - but it is indistinct and we cannot be sure of her weaponry.
Inside the circle is a bundle – cannot be sure if it is an object or a person – the view of it could be a rounded package covered in sacking (burlap/heavy wool) or it could be the back of someone curled in a fetal position – we cannot tell. But these women are prepared to defend whatever it is. It must be important for these four to band together in this instance. The background can be hazy or show signs of a battle – the focus is on the women, not what/who they are fighting.
Voting for entries for no. 3 will continue through October 29th. On October 30th, the top three voted entries will be sent to IDW where one will be chosen to be to drawn by a professial comic artist to be used as the cover art for issue no. 3. IDW reserves the right to the final decision based on various approval factors
