Wow, onemoretouch and wenxina, you're both wicked smart!! I just wish we knew what this thing was, whether it really is a cover or not. I just noticed that if you follow the link in the first post to the CBR story, it doesn't appear to be there anymore--just the Chen and Jeanty covers... You think the third image was planted for a short while to get us all crazy? Coz it worked. I mean, this has been the most interesting thread in a while. The Twilight speculation one comes in a close second, but I actually really liked that third piece. I agree with onemoretouch, the sudden disappearance may actually have boosted the significance of that piece by several points. Enough so that I've saved it, just in case.

I knew it reminded me of something and i found out what it is , in our history books we usually bumped into a painting which symbolized Greece's freedom and democracy in that painting the woman who was used as a symbol for these terms was dressed in a similar gown and had laurel wreaths on her, although she didnt carrry a sword unless my memory fools me. The painting was drawn in 1820-1830 something and i will try to post a link as soon as a find one online . We must take notice that this style of drawing was pretty common from 1800 to 1850 so probably the guy who did the pencils was inspired by a painting of that era-maybe Delacroix?

From: www.psychic-mystic.com/reading-tarot-cards-major-arcana.htmlI'm not sure if this was mentioned earlier, but I'd like to note the importance of this figure typically being masculine. Buffy has always been a symbol for feminism. I am even reminded of the images in "Chosen" when potentials were being activated by the scythe: Almost every one of them were assuming male roles to some degree. The young girl playing baseball (a male sport), the teen standing up against a (presumably) male aggressor, an Asian mother standing up during dinner (very symbolic in the context of that culture). Here again we have Buffy/Slayer Spirit assuming a historically male role. Another thing to elaborate on is the self-confidence connotation of the Magician tarot card. One thing that Buffy has been is decidedly lonely, but only after "A Beautiful Sunset" has her self-confidence been an issue since S7 "Empty Places". I believe that when this cover's issue is released, that Issue will be the turning point of the Season. I say that because this card is meant to be a reminder that the person has the skills and abilities they need, and to put their plan into action. Buffy typically does this with most Big Bads. She meets them, gets her back-end handed to her, gets all sad, and then after some turning point, gets her slayer self-confidence and attacks effectively to defeat the enemy. This cover, and its parallels to The Magician, I believe, is meant to accompany the turning point issue. As we have heard before, if I have my information correct, that issue is #21, the second issue after the Time of Your Life arc. This could be the reason why it was taken off the page for Issue #17: It is meant to be the cover/variant for Issue #21. I am researching paintings in the neoclassical style, but I'm not getting anything. I'm actually thinking about taking a copy of this cover to the University Art Department to ask if they would know, lol.

No, the image we're talking about was originally seen in that interview mentioned in your post. The two covers were named, but this one had no caption, but many of us assumed that it was another variant. Certain astute individuals pointed out the similarities to the Magician card in the tarot deck. So no, I doubt it's also a cover.

It'd be really awesome if it was though Yeah, but probably more of a cover for an omnibus kinda deal. It just doesn't really work for me as a cover of an issue, simply because the interpretations that one might come up with (i.e. your brilliant self) are more suited towards something that reflects the essence of a slayer, rather than a cover for the arc in question (that was redundant).

Well, aren't you sweet. I kinda liked it as a cover cause I started interpreting it as foreshadowing the coming arcs. Oh well.
