Excerpt with the Buffy news "I've been the Buffy omic book editor from the beginning," Allie said, "and what i've always wanted to do is a tarot deck." Rachel Pollack will working with Allie on the deck, with painted art by Paul Lee. Previews of the cards will be seen on the Whedonesque web site. "It's not a ouija board, it's a talking board," Atkins said of the Hellboy talking board. Ouija is a trademark, and the panelists joked about how their board still worked like one. Issue #16 of Buffy will be a four-issue arc, with Whedon writing and Karl Moline on art, featuring Buffy and Fray, the future slayer. "It does begin with Buffy getting stuck in the future, and confronting Fray. ... Something very big changes for Dawn in this arc." The Fray arc will be followed by an issue by Jeph Loeb, who will revisit the Buffy animated series that never happened. "It's Buffy sort of revisiting her high school life, but drawn in the style of the animated series that never happened." Several one-off issues will be written by Jim KruegerJane Esponson, Doug Petrie, Drew Greenberg, and Steven DeNight. "The world of BUffy's going to change, for the worse. If the slayers are looked on as terrorists now, it's only going to get much much worse.' This year marks Dark Horse's twentieth year of publishing manga. On the announcement of "Gant," one fan audibly sighed 'Oh fuck yes." Dark Horse will also be working with CLAMP, starting with "Clover," and and launching "Mangettes" "Clover" will be edited by Karl Horn, whom Atkins said would elicit a much bigger reaction at the anime convention "THE Karl Horn?, you would say." Atkins then opened the floor to questions. What's the reaction to Buffy's lesbian exerience? "Wait til you see the last panel of issue 15," Allie said. Allie explained the background, and the reaction to Willow and Tara's first kiss. "Joss thought, well, those were the people I was supposed to piss off," Allie said. After 13, though, "people reacted to the story rather than the hype," he continued. Atkins and Allie mentioned that the ABC news story really stirred things up, and the comments on the web site quoted a lot of scripture. "We didn't want to make it just a bunch of pinups of characters," Allie said of the Buffy Tarot. "We wanted to make it, if you believe that sort of thing, a working tarot." Not all cards will feature characters, and not all characters will be represented if they don't fit the card themes. full article www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16098

Seems like after every arc, they change everything up in some new way. Really creative on their parts. Can't wait.

I always thought that when the animated series would take off they would do an episode with Andrew setting the flying monkeys free at the school talent show... you know since we never actually got to see that. I wonder if it will be addressed in the one shot, lol.

I am really interested in what this change might be. In line with what I am thinking, what would happen if giant Dawn got hit with the scythe device?

So is there gonna be a spinoff about the animated series? I didn't get it. Or is it just gonna be a couple standalones where Buffy is thinking about Highschool? And I wonder what is gonna piss off the world so much that will make Buffy and the Slayerettes seem worse than terroists. I don't even wanna guess what "wait till the last panel on issue 15 means" means. As for "something very big changes for Dawn in this arc". I think that Dawn is pregnant, or something and that her son is the prince. (Buffy is referred to a lot as the Queen). And in Anywhere But Here, Robin mentions Buffy has to protect the prince. That's my big predictions, but now I definatly can't wait for this arc.

Okay, so after having a little while to absorb and think about this, a few things: We know from the blurb for issue #15 that "the slayers suffer a massive hit." Everyone's immediate reaction seemed to be, "OMG, Satsu's totally gonna die!" But I didn't really think so. "Massive hit" sounds much more like something bad happening on a large scale; the death of someone like Satsu, I'd think they'd go with adjectives like "tragic", or "devastating", or something to that effect. My guess for the massive hit was either the slayers (many or all) being de-powered, or a large-but-anonymous group of them being killed somehow. But now I'm wondering, what if it's both? What if a large group of them gets killed, and Satsu just happens to be among that group? Could the final panel of #15 be Buffy kissing Satsu as Satsu dies in her arms? Man, I just depressed the hell out of myself. This worries me. I really hope the second-half of S8 isn't going to become a political treatise from Joss on the evils of the Patriot Act, or something along those lines. That was my initial fear after reading the very first issue, but then I was very heartened to discover that it wasn't the entire US government looking upon Buffy and the slayers as a terrorist group, but rather just one army general and a few other isolated members of the military, and their reasons had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the typical Buffy-verse mystical-type reasons of magic & whatnot. I know Joss has very strong political views on a lot of subjects, but one of the many things I so admire about him as a storyteller is that, with maybe just a couple of exceptions, he mostly keeps those opinions out of his work--or buries them as subtext so that they're much less in-your-face. This makes it so everyone can enjoy his fiction, not just the 50% of the people who agree with him. Fiction ought to be a way to escape from the "real world" and all its problems for an hour or so. So I sure hope that quote from Allie isn't what it sounds like at first glance. One of the things General Voll said just before he kicked it was that Buffy was now at war with the human race, so it'd be nice if it turns out to be just that: the human race, and not just one or two governments, and all the political overtones that would inevitably go with that idea... Also, Allie did refer to "slayers". Plural. I somehow don't think he's just talking about Buffy and Faith, so however the Japanese vamp cult's plan turns out in the next couple of issues, it sounds as tho there'll at least be some slayers who still have their powers by issue #21...

Oh man am I not looking forward to a cartoony issue. There's a reason the Animated Series never took off... the style just doesn't fit the maturity of the series (it looked ridiculous)...I don't see the need to revisit that. Though Jeph Loeb is amazing.

Im totally angry about the goings on in the Jeph Loeb standalone. The story and the art will not fit the mood of the series as said by Barryshaft and it's... arrghhh. Sorry Im just so annoyed at the idea, it wasn't gonna work on TV so why force it into the comic?!?!?

All this new news makes the future of Buffy look better and better! So did the news of RIPPER, but where has that news led us? I don't want an animated one-shot either. We should petition that 2 issues come out that month, because I SO don't want to wait 2 months for the story to continue. The cartoon idea sounds stupid as hell. Sure, make it, I'll read it. But WHY make it part of Season 8? It's gonna be like as freakin' speed bump. AGREED

Issue #20 by Jeph Loeb sounds interesting. And I can't wait to find out the big change for Dawn. Wait til the last panel of Issue #15...alright. Season 8 is gonna just keep getting better!

Ew. No, no, no, no Buffy animated! I'd be alright with it if it was a one-shot that is not apart of Season 8, but the fact that it is just makes me want to vomit! Like others have said, it just wont fit! I mean, I guess it could work out if the story is right, but the animated style? No. It would be cooler if we got to see some old characters: Joyce, Cordelia, Angel......
But everything else has gotten me VERY excited! Especially where everything turns for the worse, I LOVE the big drama! I'm also very happy they are a moving along Dawn's story, the giant thing was funny and cool at first, but it's starting to get old, well except for the next issue.
Ugh! Why did they have to amp this up so much?! It's gunna be like a year till we get these issues.

Well at least we will be getting our Fray arc first. The cartoon style issue wont hit until November, hopefully we will be getting some other Buffyverse news by then that it wont be that bad when it comes around.
In my opinion the Jeph Loeb one off doesn't bother me all that much. It goes with the medium. I know Buffy has had a very distinct style so far but from what I gather this issue is going to be a flash back and not effect the season 8 story line. We knew there would be guest artists that would bring their own distinctive styles to the table.
Who knows, you guys may end up really enjoying the issue...

Fans (and I mean the fanatical variety) will buy just about anything when they're buzzed. So here, we'll amp you up and cash in after. I think onemoretouch said it best (possibly in another thread, but it's a bleedover subject) when she said that this really seems like cashing in to make a quick buck. At least to me it does. Why should Buffy be any different than any franchise? Well, why are we fans of this franchise in the first place? Coz it's bloody awesome, and it's losing points in my book. But it's just me. I don't think it's really Joss' idea, more of Dark Horse's, but either way, meh. Personal opinion, feel free to disagree. As for the cartoony style... could be interesting. I'll take it over another Lee/Richards fiasco. Hey, maybe Dawn won't look like a possessed doll. Again, personal opinion. You've expressed your disdain over the animated style, and I've just brought up my revulsion concerning those issues. I'd say it's Touche Turtle at this point.

I actually was looking forward to the Buffy animated series way back when!!!! i think it will be cool, and something different and unique and will keep us out of our comfort zones!!!!! I think with the whole going back to high school thing, warren and amy will definitely play a huge part in that arc because they were here classmates,so yea. and dawn in my opinion is definitely pregnant!!! or shes dying from being so big, something traumatic like that!!!The idea of her giving birth to the "prince" was interesting! The end of all those slayer and them going back to just buffy and faith has long been awaited by me i loved it when there was justone or two...but my thing with that is weve all grown attached to these girls and maybe idk we will miss them in a way if thats the case!
