That plus characters with mommy/daddy issues are so cliche. So then by that standard Buffy, Angel, Spike, Wesley & Dawn are all cliche? Some no, some yes. Buffy's was handled well even though I think they could have brought her father on a little more. Dawn's issue with her mother was fine too since her mother was a character and died. We had a connection to her and their relationship. Angel's Daddy problems were fine since they were only used as a story for a flashback. Spike yes, very cliche. This was only used a little bit though so it was fine with me while Robin's issues with his mother defined his character. There was nothing more to him until Faith came a long. Family/Dad/Mom problems are fine but used a lot. I just thought it was very cliche that it defined Robin as a character. When you say Robin Wood to me I think momma's boy and Faith's b****.
