Remember that writers strike about some newfangled thing called the Internet? Well, let go of the bitterness of having lost new episodes of your favorite shows and being s[censored!]-fed reality programming, because the writers strike actually gave birth to a new venture from Joss Whedon.
Because Whedon doesn’t have his finger in too many pies already, he and his brothers Zack and Jed, plus Jed’s fiancée, Maurissa Tancharoen, got together during the strike and wrote “Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” a three-part, 10-minute Web musical about “a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.”
“Doctor Horrible” stars Nathan Fillion (“Firefly”) as hero Captain Hammer, Felicia Day (one of the many slayerettes during “Buffy’s” last season) as cute girl Penny and Whedonverse newcomer Neil Patrick Harris as Doctor Horrible.
Today, the teaser trailer made its debut. You can’t really hear any singing, but it sure looks nice for a Web production.
The trailer marks the first piece of official material released from the Web musical, aside from key art featuring a blacked-out outline of Harris on the official site. However, that didn’t stop fansite doctorhorrible.net from launching back in March.
If Whedon fans are already campaigning to save Fox’s “Dollhouse,” which doesn’t debut until midseason, then you certainly can’t expect them to contain their excitement for “Doctor Horrible.” (Whedonites, the Daily Blink teases because it loves, just like it tells its best friend.)
No word yet on where and when “Doctor Horrible” will launch, but Whedon has already said they are doing “amazing DVD extras.”
Will “Doctor Horrible” prove to be a viable example of television writers looking for a different avenue? Only time will tell, but it can’t hurt to have Joss Whedon and his fans on your side.

Felicia Day noted in a comment on her recent blog that there’s no publicity budget for Doctor Horrible and called for fans to help out saying, “spread the word however you can, embed the video, contact blog writers you know”. When a blog visitor asked how the pseudo publicity team (fans) were doing, Felicia replied “…fans are doing a kick ass job!”, and she’s right. Within 48 hours of being released, the Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Teaser had received more than 60,000 hits.
Response so far has been overwhelmingly positive with many viewers noting that the teaser far exceeded their expectations of what Doctor Horrible would be like.
Ms Day left fans with more teasing saying, “Wait until some of the official stuff is up later this week or next, then the fans will really have stuff to work with”.
The Doctor Horrible team have set up official sites for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter so be sure to check them out and sign up (links at top of this page).
In the words of writer Maurissa Tancharoen, “Let it fly! Spread it like Wildfire!”

"So.....
The bag is catless.
During the strike I started writing a musical intended as a limited internet series, 3 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each. Writing with me was my brother Jed, his fiancee Maurissa, and my other brother Zack. To my shock and surprise, we finished it. To my greater shock and surprise, we managed (with the help of many people I'll be praising at length soon) to drag it into preproduction (yes, just as DOLLHOUSE was given a start date two months away and all my comics were due.) And today, after a grueling week of writing everything ever while trying to be a producer, I got to start shooting. A musical.
This much I will say: It's the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to. And I'm having the time of my life.
"DOCTOR HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG"
Neil Patrick Harris.....as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion..........as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day.............as Penny
And a cast of Dozens!
Coming soon.
