Truly sad news day for me as my very favorite author and a man I really admired died suddenly today.
For those who might not be familiar with the name, Michael is the author of many famous books like Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Congo, The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Timeline, and State of Fear. He also created the show ER, and has directed quite a few films.
I was surprised to learn that Michael had been fighting a silent battle with cancer, while myself and lot of other fans thought he was writing a new novel.
I first read Jurassic Park when I was in tenth grade, about 4 years after I saw the movie. Jurassic Park has been my favorite movie ever since I first saw it, and the book has been my favorite every since I first read it. Even though I was ten and it was difficult to understand the science behind Michael's writing, I immediately fell in love with how well he combined realistic scientific advancements, and showed the very worst way that those advances could be used in the world. Many of his other novels followed that same pattern, and my amazement at how well he could do what he did will never go away.
He also spoke very often on the subject of 'consensus science,' which I have also done research on in the past as well.
I got the pleasure of meeting Michael during a book signing for one of his more recent novels, State of Fear, and he was extremely nice and gracious to all of his fans.
There have been a lot of unexpected deaths this year, but this one certainly hurts the most. Very sad day.
R.I.P.
