I have a question. Do you think Bella would have been as in love with Edward if he was ugly? Or not so good smelly? Also, if vampires can't blush, then how can Edward get an erection? First off Ty, make sure to spoiler tag if you are saying something that is in future books. like this : [ spoiler ] TEXT HERE [ / spoiler ]. And to answer your question about if bella would love Edward if he were ugly. I really can't answer that. I personally don't think Bella is a conceited person and looks aren't the only thing that mattter to her. Though I think Meyer makes comments about Edwards beauty a tad too much imo. Thankfully Edward is wonderfully sexy and whether she would've loved him or not if that weren't the case is irrelevant. I think if Edward wasn't that pretty Bella wouldn't have fallen for him. It's not "Stephenie" who is saying how cute Edward is all the time...it's Bella. Yes, Stephenie wrote the book, but Bella is the character that Stephenie is writing. The only reason Bella was even into Edward in the beginning of the book was because she couldn't stop staring at his beauty. And then he turned out perfect because he saved her from a car.

...I guess the joke about it not being literature didn't hit. All kidding aside, I really did enjoy reading the book but I have to agree with people who call it a guilty pleasure.

I enjoyed the books but I'm not obsessed like so many others. When I read them I didn't sit down and stare at the books for house and hours until I finished one like so many others. I just took my time. A friend of mine said he loves Twilight way more than he used to love Harry Potter and that's just way too extreme for me...

So I finally read the book the other day *and* saw the movie. Gotta say, I found the book better (as is often the case for me). I just found the delivery of some of the lines in the movie to be gag-worthy, where as in the book they felt appropriately filled with emotion. After reading the book, I can still appreciate some of the other people's criticism regarding Bella's character (her desire to die to become a vampire and her almost co-dependence on Edward) as well as the repeated descriptions of Edward's beauty (glorious, how you dazzle me you glorious, glorious vampire) being a bit annoying. All in all, I enjoyed the book and I'm currently reading the sequel, A New Moon. It's a fun series, very much a popular fiction work written for young adults. That's it's niche. So how about some questions for you Twilight fans? Do you think Bella is right to want to become a vampire?Do you think the novel translated well to film? Which scenes worked better on film or better in the book?1. Yeah, she's finally found people she likes to be around... and they're not even people ... so why not just turn into a vamp so you can play some baseball with them 2. I think the movie did good for the book. My favorite scene would have to be the baseball scene it was sickkk First off Ty, make sure to spoiler tag if you are saying something that is in future books. like this : [ spoiler ] TEXT HERE [ / spoiler ]. So if you weren't the best looking but you got turned into a vampire you'd get a new look that grabs peoples attention. ^^ in this book anyways vampires are portrayed as hot sexay vamps xD So Edward no matter what would of been hawt.

I've read all four books, and the Twilight series is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. It does get cheesy and repetitive (we get it, Edward's gorgeous) but I like the story. The star-crossed lovers theme never gets old, IMO. I really enjoyed New Moon and Eclipse because of Jacob and his pack. Although I liked Breaking Down, I thought it was unnecessary. She should have just ended it at Eclipse because Breaking Dawn was just "And they all lived happily ever after." It could have been just as easily implied in Eclipse. And, it really annoyed me how everyone in Breaking Dawn gets a happy ending with no sacrifice. There was no cost to that reward, and to me at least, no story is REALLY really good without a cost to getting what you want. There was all that build-up for the final battle and no one gets as much as a scratch. I guess the only thing I liked about Breaking Dawn is that Jacob gets his happy ending too. (Spoiler is about Breaking Dawn) Sorry if that seemed rant-y. I really am a Twilight fan. Haha.

So I finally sat down and read the first book, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It wasn't the best thing I have ever read, but it was an entertaining way to pass five or six hours.
The first half of the book had the most problems, with way too many adjectives that seemed only to be used as page filler half the time (usually about how amazing Edward was). I understand this is what Bella thought every time she looked at him, but Meyer could have found different ways to express Bella's feelings about Edward, or just at least tone it down some. The book was easily a hundred pages too long, mostly because of the filler in the beginning.
Something else that I wasn't a fan of was how Meyer established how dependent Bella was on Edward to save her life. Again, I understand that these were plot devices that were used so Bella could get closer to Edward, but I think the first time Bella was in trouble (Car + Bella = Bellapancake), was more than enough to establish that connection between them, and make it plausible that Edward would want to look after Bella closely from that point forward.
Once they finally get together though, the book really got a lot more interesting. This was mostly because of the Cullen family and how much we learned about Stephanie's vampire mythology over the rest of the book. Everyone in the Cullen family is very interesting (especially Alice, Emmet, and Jasper), and they made the book a lot more entertaining.
Despite a few problems that were really unnecessary if more time had been spent on the book, I really did find it entertaining. I'm going to start New Moon tonight.

i first read Twilight and New Moon in April of 2007 but the series just became really popular this year, so i feel kinda special since i was ahead of the trend i'm proud to have counted down for Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, & the Twilight movie, lol. (and yet i feel kinda dumb cuz i just found this thread today, haha.) Do you think Bella is right to want to become a vampire?Yes, definitely. She loves Edward and the only way to be with him forever is to become a vampire. If I had a vampire for a boyfriend I wouldn't want to keep getting older while he stays the same age and keeps his glorious good looks, it would make me feel bad about myself. Do you think the novel translated well to film? Which scenes worked better on film or better in the book? For the most part, yes. There were obviously little things that bugged me (such as Edward's Volvo being the wrong model, Emmett's jeep not being red, etc.) but that was bound to happen since I'm such a huge fan of the book and have read it a few times. The meadow scene was much better in the book; it was too rushed in the movie. And Edward seemed more sparkly in the book. It's a little too hard to see the sparkle effect in the movie. Jasper's power should have been at least mentioned, too. I understand it would be impossible to see it's effects on film, but I believe it was still worth mentioning. The baseball scene was awesome though! I have a question. Do you think Bella would have been as in love with Edward if he was ugly? Or not so good smelly? Also, if vampires can't blush, then how can Edward get an erection? I'm not too sure about the first question. I know it sounds lame but I think they are destined to be so Bella would still be as in love with Edward. as for the second question, Stephenie Meyer has said that venom serves as a substitute for bodily fluids. (Side Note: be glad you posted this question here, if you take it to a Twilight board they rip your head off b/c so many ppl ask it and the answer is constantly repeated, lol) "The normal reactions of arousal are still present in vampires, made possible by venom-related fluids that cause tissues to react similarly as they do to an influx of blood." -Stephenie Meyer

Heh, that venom thing is interesting. ;D [rant] Anyways, I've decided to put my 2 cents into this thread. So I picked up a copy of Twilight back in 2005, when it first came out. Literally *nobody* had heard of it. I was in my horror book phase then, and I had always liked vampires. So I read it, and it was an okay read, good fluff. But I was only 12 back then and my viewpoints have changed. I've read all 4 books, and here's what annoys me about them. (Beware Twilight lovers, it's a bit harsh.) 1) Characters: Cardboard cutouts, vapid, waaaay too mary and gary-sueish. Bella is a horrible role model for teenagers, noone should want to be a whiny, clumsy, wimp. Edward is waaay too unrealistic (yet probably the only reason most girls read it.) Also, Bella/Edward is total Buffy/Angel circa season 2. 2) Writing. She doesn't seem to know what a thesauraus is, using the same adjectives over and over again 'angelic' 'gleaming' 'cold', etc. I've read better *fanfics*. She should've spent less time having Bella gush over Edward and more time actually writing the plot. 3) Plot. Most of the first book seems to be 'EDWARD TAKE ME NOW' 'Oh, but I can't, it's too DANGEROUS' (Heheh, this quote from Angel sums it up perfectly: vrya.net/bdb/clip.php?clip=5671) I'd like it more if it showed more of the werewolves story, that alone was what kept me reading the series. Especially Leah, I loved her. So in conclusion, it's definitely not the best thing I've ever read. True, there were some good parts, but it was mostly lalala happy cows pooping rainbows and kittens. I really am confused here. I have read all four Twilight books, but I in no way would call it a guilty pleasure, since I don't see what there is for me to be guilty about.
To me, the Twilight series seemed like a Buffy/Angel love story, with just a different vampire mythology. I'm not sure if believing this means I can't see bad quality writing when I'm reading it.
I also, didn't see anything wrong with the movie. Sure, the sparkling seemed badly done. But it wouldn't have been the easiest effect to create. Besides some good scenes being cut out, and the annoying fast-pace, I really enjoyed the movie.
Twilight is the best thing I've ever read. And I'm not the kind of person who rarely reads books.
Is there something wrong with me for thinking this?

Is there something wrong with me for thinking this? no, i completely agree with you. i don't find Twilight to be a "guilty pleasure" at all. i flaunt my fandom proudly! Twilight is my favorite book, and trust me when i say that i read frequently. i will not say that Twilight is the best-written book ever because i know it isn't, but it's my favorite book. every book has flaws but Twilight gets picked on just because it's popular. when something becomes really popular there are always people that love it and those that hate it. i feel like some of the haters that are Buffy fans as well feel like Twilight is ripping off the Bangel relationship . i see the similarities which is probably why i like both BtVS and Twilight. but just because a storyline is similar that doesn't make it a rip-off (especially considering Stephenie Meyer has said that she never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or anything vampy before. i know it sounds unrealistic, but i still believe her. ) i know everyone has their own opinions and that's ok, i just need to reassure my fellow Twilight fans that also happen to be SlayAlive members that Twilight may be a "guilty pleasure" for some, but it doesn't have to be. you should be proud to love Twilight! (yes, even guys are allowed to love it.)

Sure, the vampire mythology may be less scary with the sparkling, and not having the teeth, but it doesn't have to necessarily be terrifying. I like both Buffy and Twilight because, yeah, they're both about vampires. But I don't see how Bella and Edward could be compared to Buffy and Angel. Besides the fact that Edward is a "vegetarian" vampire, the two couples are very different. And I agree with you, you should be proud to love Twilight. And I am.

I think Twilight tends to be a love it or hate it thing, and I have no problem with fans! Except for the ones who go around proposing to Robert Pattinson... that's a little creepy. Or the ones that 'tlk lk dis' and threaten to kill you if you say you don't like Edward.
