Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely First off, let me say that I like the idea of Twilight never being revealed, rather to be a brand new character (we haven't had one of those since S5!!) and that his "fake out" was nothing more than that. twilight: 1. The time between sunset and night 2. A state of ambiguity 3. A period of decline
I have always thought Twilight to be morally ambiguous, and secretly wondered if he was from a power that watched the world similar to the guardians. Why else would he be magical and condescend Buffy for her use of magic? Twilight + Guardians: The Guardian did say that she was the only one left in the world. That doesn't include other dimensions, which is where I have always thought Twilight originated from. She also said that they were there to help and protect the Slayer, and that they watched the Watchers. Jane Espenson recently said that "The point of slaying is to even the balance between the dark and the light - it's not to wipe out the darkness." Twilight himself is morally ambiguous, neither on the side of good or evil. What if Twilight was an emissary from a power similar to the Guardians that monitored the balance of good and evil? What if he is a Guardian not too happy with what she has done with the scythe? This brings me to Balance Theory. Twilight as Balancer: Buffy's role as slayer, as Jane puts it, is supposed to be a balancing force of light against the darkness. Since the activation of the Slayer Army, the light of good has grown too powerful, and it has obviously began it's corruption (see: Buffy's jewel heist, Simone's rogue heist... ooh, Issue #23 connection??). This makes me think that perhaps he as a "big bad" isn't all that bad, and is kind of justified in his actions. Twilight also took some joy in the carefully orchestrated battle which he pitted equals against each other, not caring for the outcome (Watcher against Warlock, Slayer against Slayer). This lends me to believe that Buffy is not Twilight's target for elimination, but rather the Slayer army itself; keep in mind that 'twilight' also means "a period of decline". Why else would he attack the Scotland Castle when Buffy was in Japan? Granted, he did say he would kill Buffy the next time they met, but perhaps he doesn't intend to face her again. I don't have my copy of "A Beautiful Sunset" on me, but I remember someone asking why he didn't kill her, and he responded that it had been done in the past to little effect. Instead he sought to hit her at her greatest weakness: her moral certainty. ------------- Other thoughts: Ethan, a servant of Chaos, was imprisoned and ultimately killed under Twilight's power (the General had Twilight's symbol). Buffy being an agent of chaos, throwing the world out of balance with the Slayer Army, could be why Ethan chose to aid her.
The question I pose to you is this: Where do Riley, Amy, Warren, Willow, Xander, Dawn, Faith, and Giles fit in with Balance Theory?

I think he meant the Has anyone ever thought Twilight could be.... -thread.
But it's easier to discuss different theories if they get one thread each. I'm not saying there should be a hundred different threads for each person Twilight could be, but we should have threads like these for specific theories.

Yeah. This is more of an anti-Twilight-is-so-and-so thread. Is a good idea though to have a Twilight theories sub-board. One thread to discuss each possible character.... Oh, and thanks malsad, I was beginning to wonder if this thread was reply-worthy!

i personally think twilight is Ben. He is morally ambiguous just the same as twilight also was searching for a way to rid himself of glory. Glory appeared as the first to taunt spike... so we know she technically died... maybe when her essence left ben she left behind power leaving ben with power, but why didnt ben appear to taunt giles for allegedly killing him, but we never had 100% proof that ben died... glory's essence could of departed from him into the void of dimensions as the portals opened before ben supposedly died. I think its all connected to dawn being 'the key' dawn being the literal opposite to twilight maybe her transformations are connected to twilight as a result of the scythe spell, when glory planned to use her to bleed all dimensions into eachother, maybe dawn works in reverse too by banishing magic from the earthrealm instead of bringing it. maybe the term twilight can be connected to the term slayer as not a person but a state of being chosen. chosen to bring around the end of magic as the slayer is chosen to stem the spread of evil. i had a different theories but this is my favourite my other theories included xander being offered power by a higher being tired of being noone with no power but i quickly discarded that theory, wesley because of the itchy neck remark as he had his throat cut and a future version of angel having to end magic to atone fulfilling the shanshu by banishing magic he gets to live as human in a demon free world but my ben theory fits i would like to hear your comments

I think Scott Allie sort of stressed once that Twilight's name is important, which led me to believe that "Twilight" could be the English translation of a name in a lost language. If it can't be read or pronounced easily by modern warlocks or soldiers, the name could have been changed for the benefit of English speakers. I'm not sure that Twilight has a whole lot to do with balance. He seems to want to tip the scales completely, which doesn't really indicate balance.
The theory that Twilight could be Ben is interesting, but Ben didn't seem to be in favor of ending magic. I got the impression that he wanted to be powerful in ways that could only be achieved by mystical means. Ending magic would end whatever would give Ben power, and he was against strategies that would end him.
I'm not sure that Angel is a possible culprit either. So far he's been shown with his game face on and dripping with blood with no effort to hide anything about himself.

Didn't Ben die with Glory, though? Personally, that would just be terrible if Twilight was a human/hell goddess/uber sorcerer.

Just wana say, ive been a fan of the "balance theory" since season 7.
Buffy died, fair and square. The power of "good" ressurected her, allowing the power of "evil" to go mad with power, hence season 7 finale. The power of "good" does the slayer spell, out weighing the power of evil EVEN more. Again allowing "evil" to fight back with its most powerful of powers. Which could see the end of the world.
Thus, twilight is a good guy, he wants to set things to equal again. Also why im a Giles is twilight supporter.

I wouldn't see it as the end of the world; maybe an apocalypse. That's right, and an apocalypse means change. In a way, having a race of Slayers (not a master race, don't get me wrong) could be an apocalypse. Evil tried to make a big change in S7, and Buffy fought back by making a change of her own. Now the human race is fearing anything new and different, as usual, giving the evil side more strength. Buffy didn't declare war on "the human race," the human race declared war on her and all the young human women who are different through no fault of their own. That kind of hate derives from evil, and Twilight or anything else that encourages hate out of fear can't be good.
